Greenwich's Sullivan earns All-American honors Connecticut Wrestling Online CLEVELAND, Ohio, March 30 -- Greenwich's John Sullivan (275) missed on a possible New England championship by staying home and participating in a senior class production.
That's ok. He earned All-American honors two weeks later.
Sullivan became the first Connecticut wrestler since 1998 to earn All-American honors to finished seventh at 275 at the National High School Coaches Association senior national championship tournament this weekend in Cleveland. The top eight finishers in each weight class earned All-American honors.
Connecticut had a fine showing with 17 wrestlers competing in the tournament. The Nutmeg State finished tied for 24th place with 45 points with Utah. Massachusetts was the top New England school in 23rd place with 48 points. New Hampshire was 26th (43 points) while Rhode Island was 42nd overall with six points.
Sullivan, who lost his second round match, won six of his seven consolation round bouts. He earned a spot in the top eight with a tight 2-1 victory over New York's Chris Cowen.
The first wrestling All-American from Greenwich, Sullivan advanced through the consolation round with an 11 second pin of New York's Jon Geddes and an eight-second pin of Michigan's J.P. Casey.
The last Connecticut wrestler to earn All-American honors was New Fairfield's Tom Serrano, who was fifth at 135 in 1998.
East Windsor's Jason Vermes (112) and New Canaan's Bruno Dorismond (275) each came within one victory of earning All-American honors.
Vermes, who dropped his opening match of the tournament, won four straight consolation round bouts but fell in the consolation quarterfinals to Michael Meyer of Minnesota, 14-5.
Dorismond, who went farther than any other Connecticut wrestler in the championship round. dropped a consolation quarterfinal decision to Maryland's Olabode Ogunwole, 6-2. Dorismond won two matches in the winner's bracket before dropping a 8-2 decision to Minnesota's John May in the quarterfinals.
Bethel's Jeff Oldham (125) won two matches in the consolation round along with Southington's Bill St. Pierre (130). Fairfield's Max Pazdan (189) also won two matches in the tournament.
No Connecticut wrestler has won a national championship. The only Connecticut wrestler to make the finals was Hand-Madison's Jim Guzzio, who was second at 130 in 1992.
RHAM's Trevor Brown and Brock Littlefield were signed up for the tournament but did not participate.
