By GERRY deSIMAS Connecticut Wrestling Online SOUTHINGTON, Dec. 30, 2002 -- Once the Mustangs began to stampede, there was no way for the Southington High wrestling team to stop them until it was too late. The No. 6 Fairfield High wrestling team built a 42-0 lead to roll to a 42-27 win over No. 2 Southington Monday.
Undefeated Fairfield (8-0) won the first nine matches, three by pin. The match began at 152 pounds. It was the first win ever for Fairfield over Southington, which beat the Mustangs twice last year.
"We won all the close matches," Fairfield coach Jason Shaughnessy said. "In my head, there were a few close matches and we won them all. We got it rolling and it just went."
The key may have been making weight.
"We're a strong team as long as everyone makes weight," Shaughnessy said. "We had some close matches over the weekend."
Barrett Risley (152) was fourth in Class LL a year ago but didn't make weight Saturday and missed four matches against Bristol Central, Amity, NFA and Bridgeport Central. Freshman Omar Graudiel leapt from 140 to fill in at 152 pounds.
"Like most good teams, we have to be on weight 100 percent to wrestle our best," Shaughnessy said.
Risley got it going for the Mustangs with a second period pin while teammates Zack Wagner and Ryan Lavelle followed with a pair of decisions. Maz Pazdan, second in the State Open a year ago, gave FHS a 20-0 lead with a pin at 189.
Sophomore Brendan Herlihey outlasted SHS senior Chris D'Angelo at 215 before senior Eric Fellitto prevailed in a battle with Jon Vose at 275 pounds for a 29-0 lead.
Southington (4-1) won the final five matches but few were easy. Graudiel held a 7-0 lead over Damain DeCuri at 140 before getting caught and pinned. Chris Lee (145) had a tough battle with Anthony Parrish before winning, 6-4.
Pazdan improved to 11-0 for Fairfield while Fellitto, Lavelle, Wagner and Dominick Morales improved to 10-1.
Southington saw its 24-match winning streak snapped.
