Former New Canaan wrestler killed in Iraq
NEW CANAAN, Nov. 15 -- Former New Canaan High wrestler Kevin J. Dempsey was killed in action in Iraq as U.S. troops launched a raid against insurgents earlier this month outside of Fallujah. "He protected everyone in this school," said New Canaan coach Paul Gallo told the Stamford Advocate. "It's a sad thing that he ended up dying, but I'm proud of him." Dempsey, 23, was a member of the Marine Corps. He graduated in 2000. Dempsey wrestled for New Canaan for two years, taking third in the FCIAC Tournament in 2000.

“He did not like to lose. I always knew he would give me 1,000 percent when he went after people [on the mat],” Gallo told the Associated Press. He is the 16th military member from Connecticut ties to die in Iraq or Afghanistan since March 2002. Dempsey's No. 72 jersey was retired by the New Canaan football program on Thanksgiving Day. He was MVP on the annual Thanksgiving Day game with Darien in 1999.
