Windham nips SHS in loaded Waterford Invitational
No. 3 Windham had just two champions but still captured the Waterford Invitational by nipping No. 4 Southington, 209-208 in a tournament that featured six teams in the top 10 of the preseason state coaches poll. Doug Ross (215) beat Bristol Eastern’s Ryan Carbone, 9-1 for a championship while Nick Marouski (119) rallied from a two-point deficit with 45 seconds to go to earn a 6-3 victory over Kyle Leduc of Cumberland, R.I. Trailing 3-1, Marouski reversed Leduc and threw him to his back in one move. Southington had four champions led by Jeff Fontaine (103), Dave Badgely (130), Mike Monson (140) and Spencer Charette (285). Badgely won when Griswold’s Brock Coutu illegally slammed him and he couldn’t continue. Ledyard’s T.J. Hepburn (152) was named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler. ... Bristol Central had five champions including outstanding wrestler Chris Lombardi (119) as the Rams captured the 6th annual Plainville Invitational. BC has won the tournament two years in a row. … Bacon Academy’s Matt Chalmers (285) beat Platt’s Kevin Potter in the semifinals by five and then beat Foran’s Robert Wilkinson in the finals (pin, 2:26) to win the outstanding wrestler award at the Indian Classic in Farmington. The Bobcasts had four champions but finished second to Farmington, which won for the fourth straight year. … Andrew Duncan (112) and Chris Bordner (125) won titles as Thomaston won its first-ever tournament title at the 29th annual Pomperaug Holiday Tournament. Three other Thomaston wrestlers finished second. ... Greenwich had five individual champions to win the first Shelton/Fairfield Ludlowe Tournament. … Montville had eight wrestlers win their weight classes as the Indians won the East Hartford Invitational for the second year in a row. … Harbor Fields, N.Y. won the Berlin Invitational. … Suffield’s Dale Rollet (130) and Pomfret’s David Loomis (189) were named outstanding wrestlers as Belmont Hill, Mass., won the Doug Parker Invitational for the third straight year. Suffield High was second, 11 points off the pace. ... East Lyme’s Jon Manwaring (171) finished first in the Cranston East tournament while Ryan Clarke (125) lost a tough 8-2 decision in the finals against Cranston’s Shawn Gilblin, who placed in the New England last year. East Lyme’s Lucas Bowman (215) took fourth.

Fairfield Ludlowe’s Mickey Schallau (125) earned a 2-0 victory while teammate Jack Clark (103) rallied to score five points in the third period and win by three as Ludlowe beat Trumbull for the first time, 39-34. . . . Stamford won seven of the last nine bouts to beat Ridgefield, 37-27. ... Wolcott Tech’s Caleb Duborg (135) and Jessie Harms (142) closed out the match with pins to help Tech erase an 18-point deficit and beat Gilbert, 42-36. ...New Canaan had 10 pins in a 64-18 win over Norwalk. ... Haddam-Killingworth (1-1), now in its second year, earned its first varsity win with a 48-27 win over Green Farms Academy of Westport.

Bobcats prevail, Chiefs sweep three
Bacon Academy had six pins as they beat East Lyme, 54-22 in the season opener for both schools. … Nonnewaug (3-0) swept its opening night match with victories over Hartford Public, Somers and Stafford. … Pomperaug had six pins as long-time coach Mike O’Keefe returned from a one-year absence in a 54-24 win over Joel Barlow. Senior captains Garrett Schmidt (135) had the fastest pin of the night in 19 seconds. ... Jon Bonett (140) had a pin as Housatonic topped Northwestern, 52-22. … No. 5 Griswold had eight pins in an easy 66-12 win over Fitch. Brendan Brackett (275) had a 19-second pin for the Wolverines. … St. Bernard had four pins and picked up four forfeits in a 48-33 win over Woodstock Academy. … Killingly had eight pins in a 45-31 win over Waterford. … Lyman Memorial won its ECC debut with a 48-24 win over New London. Danbury remains atop the top 10 poll
For the 74th straight week since 1999, Danbury is ranked No. 1 in the Norwich Bulletin’s state coaches poll. The poll added five new voters this year to swell its ranks to 15 voters. … Three schools from the CCC South are ranked in the preseason top 10 poll along with three from the Eastern Connecticut Conference. … In New Milford, Daryl Daniels returns for a ninth season behind the bench after a four-year break. Daniels replaced Pat Burns. .. At Plainville, Doug Fink has replaced Aaron Sarra as coach. … E.O. Smith is fielding a dual meet team for the first team this year. … The 2007 edition of the Connecticut High School Wrestling Record Book is now available by clicking on the link. Two major records were set last season with Ledyard's T.J. Hepburn setting a new single-season mark for wins and Windham's Bran Crudden setting a new record for most career wins. ...
