Middletown rocks No. 2 Southington, No. 3 Ledyard

In a stunning performance of clutch wrestling, No. 10 Middletown (25-2) upset No. 2 Southington (19-3) with a 31-22 victory and nipped No. 3 Ledyard, 28-26. “This was the best day in the program’s history as far as my tenure is concerned,” Middletown coach Mark Fong told The Herald Press. “I think we were a little more balanced that I thought we were and we’re peaking at the right time.” Southington was missing four starters including Dave Badgley (125, academically ineligible), Alex Uliasz (171,  suspended from school -- discipline) and Dillon Ritchie (130, hurt). Middletown’s Richard Perry (215) came up with a key 4-3 win over Southington’s Chris Vose and teammate Victor Ektukudo (103) beat Southington’s Doug Fontaine, 3-2. Against Ledyard, Ektukudo had a key 4-3 win over Taylor Gunnels and Perry had a crucial 5-3 win in OT over Nick Morales. …Farmington (28-2) extended its school record for most wins in a season with wins over Branford, 52-20, Pomperaug, 55-14 and Seymour, 54-20. Eight FHS wrestlers went 3-0 on the day. … At the first Brawl at the Pub in Hartford, Ridgefield and Bunnell combined to place 15 wrestlers in the finals. Ridgefield had six champions to beat Bunnell, 232-179 and win the tournament. … Jonathan Law (32-6, 6-1 SCC) beat Killingly, Housatonic and Wolcott Tech to earn a spot in the Woodstock Academy Duals finals but fell in the championship bout to Montville, 35-25. Law tied a state record for most wins (32) in a season set by Southington (32-1) and Bridgeport Central (32-1) in 2002. Killingly beat Woodstock to finish third. … Montville erased a 10-point deficit (25-15) with five straight wins from Zack Hardcastle (130), Pat Ryan (135), Wilcox (140), Alger (145) and Mike Raimondi (152) to outlast Law in the finals, 35-25. ...  Fermi’s Joe Lambert (152) had four wins (3 by pin) to improve to 40-1 as Fermi went 3-1 on the day. Fermi lost to Amity but beat New Britain, East Lyme and Wilton. … With wins over Immaculate and Gilbert, Shelton (17-14, 4-4 SCC) guaranteed its first-ever winning season and set a new single season mark for wins. Rob Ferrante (112, 32-6) won twice. … Masuk (25-8) set a new single season record for most wins by sweeping Norwalk, Bridgeport and Weston. ...Stratford (18-8, 6-4 SWC) outlasted Darien, 40-37 to sweep a quad meet. Stratford also beat host Enfield and Foran-Milford. …. No. 4 Windham and No. 5 Amity each won four bouts each to sweep respective five-team meets.

Fairfield Warde (13-6) had six pins to beat cross-town rival Fairfield Ludlowe (20-13, 9-5 FCIAC) and capture the FCIAC Eastern Division title.

Minnesota suspends wrestling due to virus

In Minnesota, the governing body for high school athletics has shutdown wrestling for eight days after 24 confirmed cases of herpes gladiatorum, a virus spread by skin-to-skin contact. Teams can condition but there is to be no skin-to-skin contact. The ban will be lifted Feb. 6. There have been no cases in Connecticut but Windham High coach Pat Risley told the Hartford Courant of the lengths his program goes to keep kids safe. "We take extraordinary precautions to keep our mats clean," Risley told the Courant. "We wash the mats before and after every practice. Also, we demand that our kids wear long-sleeve shirts and long pants to all of our practices." Windham wrestlers are one of the few teams to wear tights during matches. "We always wear tights and that's not just for looks," Risley said. "There's a reason behind it. It's to have as little skin-to-skin contact as possible with anybody.”

Ludlowe extends

its own win record

Emmett Donovan (152) outlasted Scott Spazono in 7-5 in OT as Fairfield Ludlow (20-12, 9-4) extended its single-season school record for wins with a 47-28 win over Brien McMahon. Ludlowe will meet cross-town rival Fairfield Warde for the FCIAC Eastern Division title Friday night at 6 p.m.  …. Hall won the final five bouts, including two by pin to beat South Windsor, 34-27. … Farmington (25-2, 4-1 NWC) took a huge step toward winning a piece of its first-ever Northwest Conference championship with a 40-30 victory over No. 8 Berlin (18-8, 4-1 NWC). Farmington, which set a school record with its 25th victory, can win a piece of the league title with a win over RHAM next Wednesday. Evan Bailey (119, 30-4) was losing before pinning Berlin's Ryan Bisson to help Farmington grab an 18-0 lead. At 189, a takedown attempt by Berlin's Spencer Polaske was too late and Farmington's Jim Coyle (29-5) prevailed, 2-1. … After No. 7 Bristol Eastern scored 18 straight points to tie the match at 22-22, No. 2 Southington (18-1, 5-0) won four of the final five bouts by pin to virtually clinch the CCC South championship with a 49-22 win over Eastern (17-2, 4-1). Southington can win the title with a win over New Britain, which has just eight varsity wrestlers. ... Shelton led 28-0 and held off a late Derby charge to win, 38-34. Shelton sophomore Rob Ferrante (112) improved to 30-6. … New Britain’s Jordan Jacquo (140, 30-0) remained undefeated while teammate Joey Colella (189) earned an impressive 5-2 win over NFA’s Nick Murphy but the Wildcats beat New Britain, 54-22. … Juan Flores (152), Pat Duhamel (189), Travis Koch (215) and Jose Solano (285) each earned major decision victories to lead No. 4 Windham (24-4, 6-0 ECC Small) past Killingly (21-7, 4-3) by a comfortable 53-11 margin. ... Jonathan Law (29-5, 6-1 SCC) extended its school record for most wins with a 63-12 win over Foran. … No. 9  Platt High set a school record for most points in a match and most shutouts in a year (3) after its 81-0 win over Bulkeley. ... Three straight wins for Nonnewaug at 112, 119 and 125 enabled the Chiefs to avoid being upset by Housatonic in a 38-34 victory in Falls Village. … Terryville (13-10) beat Seymour, 47-30. .. Avon (14-5, 6-0 NCCC) and Suffield (17-4, 6-0) remained undefeated in the NCCC and will meet next Wednesday to determine the regular season champion. Avon beat Granby, 40-33 and Suffield beat Canton, 49-24. …  Bristol Central (15-4, 3-1 CCC South) took a 33-point lead before Maloney scored a point in a 45-17 victory. … Fairfield Ludlowe will host the Southern Connecticut JV wrestling championships on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.

The top four teams (Danbury, Southington, Ledyard, Windham) remained the same in the latest high school coaches wrestling poll. Stamford, which beat Amity at the Ridgefield Challenge, remained at No. 6 while Amity inched ahead of the Knights at No. 5. ... The latest state individual rankings have been released by former coach Dave Nowakowski.
