Saturday, Feb. 10
Ledyard rolls in ECC,
Dragons takes NWC
n ECC -- No. 3 Ledyard had all 14 varsity wrestlers win medals as the Colonels easily captured their third straight ECC Tournament with a 258-185½ victory over No. 4 Windham High. Ledyard had five champions including T.J. Hepburn (140) who became just the third wrestler to win four ECC titles. C.J. Satti (119), David Bellaflores (160), Julian Hightower (189) and Nick Morales (215) also won for Ledyard. … Montville’s Jessica Bennett (112) became the first girl to medal in the ECC Tournament by finishing sixth. … Hightower beat NFA’s Nick Murphy in the finals with a takedown in the last 10 seconds, 6-5. … Griswold had four champions, including Sam Wilcox, who beat the top two seeds to win at 135.
n NWC --- No. 2 Middletown won its first NWC Tournament championship with a 216-198½ victory over Farmington, which had eight finalists and five individual champions. Berlin was third (191). Middletown’s Ronnie Brown had a key 2-1 win in the finals at 145 while teammate Richard Perry (215) nipped Farmington’s Kia Gholampour in the finals, 11-9 in OT. RHAM’s Kevin Campbell was the outstanding wrestler. For Farmington, five champions and finishing second was its best-ever finish in the tournament.
n CSC -- With three individual champions and nine wrestlers in the finals, Hartford Classical outlasted Vinal Tech, 181-170 to capture the inaugural Constitution State Conference (CSC) Tournament. Corey Green (112), Aashen Arango (140) and Keonta Crawford (285) won for Classical. John Garrison (130) of Platt Tech/West Haven was named outstanding wrestler.
n NCCC – Suffield had five of its seven finalists win titles as the Wildcats won the NCCC Tournament to clinch its first-ever NCCC championship. Entering the finals, Suffield trailed Avon by three but the Wildcats won with 193½ points to Avon’s 184. Key wins came from Justin Sheridan (125), who hit a reversal and three-point near fall with 18 seconds left to earn a 6-2 victory, and Larry Cauley (130) who outlasted Avon’s Mike Defeo, 5-0. Avon was 2-4 in the finals. Suffield’s Dale Rollet (135) was the outstanding wrestler.
n BL – Thomaston clinched its first-ever BL title by rallying to beat Nonnewaug, 182½-177 in the closest BL tournament since 1991. Nonnewaug had won the BL Tournament for the past 10 years and had a 10½ lead in the finals at one point. But Thomaston had five of its six finalists win. Terryville’s Justin Cronan (189) was named the most outstanding wrestler.
n FCIAC – Danbury had nine finalists and eight champions as they easily won the FCIAC tournament for the 21st straight year with 307½ points. Greenwich (210), Stamford (187) and Ridgefield (132) rounded out the top four. Danbury sophomore Tucker Schaefer (130) was named outstanding wrestler after upsetting Ridgefield’s undefeated Corey Paulish (37-1) in the finals, 3-0.
n SCC -- No. 5 Amity starting pinning from the beginning and rolled to its third SCC Tournament championship in the last four years with a 168½ points, far ahead of Derby (106½) and Jonathan Law (105). Ryan Roddy (160) had three pins including a 39-second pin the finals.
n Other news – South Windsor dominated Rockville, 63-10 to clinch its first-ever CCC East championship. … Amity won its third SCC championship in the last four years by winning the SCC Tournament. … Wethersfield defeated Newington to clinch the CCC West title.

Farmington, Berlin, Middletown win shares of NWC title
Jim Coyle (189, 34-4) had a pin while Kia Gholampour (215, 34-2), Mike Brignano (125, 39-2) and George Robinson (285, 29-3) each had forfeit wins as Farmington won a share of its first-ever conference championship with a 51-22 Northwest Conference victory over RHAM. For the second year in a row, Farmington (29-2, 5-1 NWC) set a single season mark for most wins in a year. … No. 2 Middletown (26-2, 5-1 NWC) won a share of its second straight Northwest Conference championship with a dominant 79-0 victory over Rocky Hill. The Dragons shared the title with Plainville a year ago. Middletown set a new single season record for wins. … No. 8 Berlin (21-9, 5-1 NWC) won a share of its 19th Northwest Conference title with a 62-12 victory over East Catholic. … New Britain senior co-captains Jordan Jacquo (140, 35-0) and Joey Colella (189, 35-1) each won against Bristol Eastern but eight New Britain forfeits paved the way to a 64-15 win for Eastern. … Suffield (22-7, 7-0 NCCC) erased a 23-point deficit and won the last four weight classes to beat Avon, 36-32 and take a big step toward its first-ever league title. Suffield’s Jamelle Stevenson (275) won by pin in the final bout to clinch the win. Avon is 17-8, 6-1 NCCC. … Pins by Marc Halper (119) and Evan Jacobs (130) in two of the final three bouts helped Bunnell (20-7, 7-4 SWC) earn a thrilling victory over cross-town rival Stratford (18-9, 6-5 SWC). … Jonathan Law (33-6, 8-1 SCC) set a new state record for most wins in a single season (33) with a 38-20 victory over Shelton (17-15, 4-5 SCC). … Thomaston (16-5, 6-0 BL) completed its first-ever undefeated season in the Berkshire League and took a huge step toward its first league championship with a solid 48-21 win over Housatonic. … Bristol Central’s Chris Lombardi (119) won by pin in the final bout of the night to lift Central to a 33-32 victory over No. 9 Platt High (24-6, 2-3 CCC South). Central’s Greg Dionne (285) moved up a weight class to pick up a big win while sophomore Alex Smith (215) lost but didn’t get pinned. ... No. 6 Amity (21-2, 10-0 SCC) dominated Xavier, 60-6 to finish undefeated in the regular season in the league.

Ridgefield set a new school record with its 20th victory in a 57-22 win over Wilton. ... The latest league standings have been compiled and are available as the state begins its final week of dual meet action.

Monday, Feb. 5
Middletown surges to No. 2 spot in poll
After its big win over Southington and Ledyard on Saturday, Middletown (25-2) achieved its highest ranking ever in the latest high school coaches wrestling poll. The Dragons were ranked No. 2, one point ahead of No. 3 Ledyard. Windham remained at No. 4. Southington dropped from second to No. 8. ... Bacon Academy’s Andrew Hill won by pin in the final bout of the meet to lift Bacon to a 34-30 win over Montville on Monday. "All matches should be that way," Montville coach Gary Wilcox told the Norwich Bulletin. "They wrestled well and so did we."  … Darien got 7 forfeits in a 54-28 win over Westhill, which actually won four of the five matches that actually occurred on the mat. ... The latest state individual rankings have been released by former coach Dave Nowakowski.
