n Wednesday's scores and boxes

Danbury tops wrestling poll
A new season is set to begin on Wednesday. But some things remain the same. Danbury remains on top of the state coaches poll. The Hatters received all 13 votes in the Norwich Bulletin’s state coaches poll. Ledyard was ranked No. 2 while Southington was ranked third. Windham High coach Pat Risley is upbeat about the No. 4 Whippets. “I have five returning place finishers at the (Class) Ms,” Risley said. “My horses are pretty tough.” No. 6 Middletown graduated three seniors and a fourth veteran decided not to return. Farmington is at No. 11 but coach Eric Misko is optimistic with 12 seniors returning. “We return a lot of talent,” he said. “I’m excited about our team. Luke Walsh, who finished second at (Class) L (at 112), was injured during the states. He put in a lot of time this offseason ... and I expect him to do very well at New Englands.”

Preparations for season under way
Practice is under way for the 2007-08 Connecticut high school wrestling season. The first contest of the year is set for Wednesday, Dec. 12. The CIAC championship meets are scheduled for Feb. 15-16 in Trumbull (Class LL), Bristol Central (Class L), Windham High (Class M) and St. Bernard’s (Class S). The State Open is Feb. 22-23 at the New Haven Athletic Center and the New England championships will be Feb. 29 and March 1 in Lowell, Mass.

Tremblay to replace Day at Berlin High
BERLIN, June 28 – Former Berlin High wrestler David Tremblay has been hired to replace Jim Day as wrestling coach at Berlin High. Tremblay won a Class M title, placed twice at the State Open and wrestled at Southern Connecticut State and with Team USA. He has been an assistant to Day, with the Berlin High football team and with the Glastonbury High wrestling team. Day, a member of the New England Wrestling Hall of Fame, retired at the end of the 2007 season. In 26 years, Day (445-132-3) led Berlin to 20 Northwest Conference and nine state titles. Day will remain as athletic director at BHS.

Seymour BOE finds money for wrestling
SEYMOUR, June 12 -- The Seymour Board of Education adjusted its budget to save the wrestling program. In May, the Board said they would cut wrestling to help save $54,000 that was cut from the education budget by the Board of Finance. Instead, the Board of Education cut
$24,000 by deferring several maintenance projects, cut $21,000 from special education salaries and reduced pay for several administrative positions. (Connecticut
