Champions crowned at league tourneys
n FCIAC: No. 1 Danbury won the league tournament for the 22nd straight season with finalists in nine of 14 weight classes. Danbury, which had seven champions, beat Fairfield Ludlowe, 285-184. It was the best-ever finish for Ludlowe, now in its fourth season. … Danbury’s Dean Smith (152) remained unbeaten while teammate Humphrey Swift (285) erased a 5-2 deficit to beat Bridgeport’s Hattrey Wilson in the finals, 12-10. … Ludlowe had two champions and five finalists. … Stamford's Mike Battinelli, the tournament's outstanding wrestler, became the ninth wrestler to win four straight FCIAC titles and the second from Stamford.
n ECC: Ledyard’s Julian Hightower (189) won his third straight ECC title to help the No. 2 Colonels win the ECC Tournament for the fourth straight year. Caleb Morth (152) and John Gabordi (285) also won for Ledyard, who scored 212 points. Bacon Academy was second with 185½ to clinch the ECC Small Division title while Windham (182) and Waterford (163) were third and fourth. … Griswold’s Brock Coutu (135) won his third straight ECC title while Tyler Banks (130) won his second. …
n SWC: No. 4 New Milford won the SWC Tournament for the fifth time in the last six years and clinched the league title. The Green Wave had two champions, six finalists and four wrestlers that finished third to score 199½ points, well ahead of second-place Pomperaug (132) and Bethel (128½). … Stratford had three individual champions with Anthony Ricco (119), Jesse Inman (135) and Jordan Miron (285) winning titles. … Pomperaug’s Steele Verzillo won at 160 and the Panthers had four other wrestlers finish second. … New Milford clinched its fourth straight SWC championship. … Bethel’s Andrew Ford (152) earned the outstanding wrestler honors after his 5-3 win in the finals over New Milford’s Michael Bellagamba.
n NWC: No. 7 Berlin had three individual champions, eight finalists and three wrestlers finish third to outdistance No. 3 Middletown and Farmington to win the NWC Tournament. Berlin dropped a 1-point decision to league champion Middletown in December and lost to Farmington earlier this week. Berlin had 209½ points with Middletown second with 189½ and Farmington third with 152. Berlin’s John Fiorillo (160, 43-0) was the outstanding wrestler after nipping Plainville’s Mario Acca, 3-2 in the finals. … Middletown had six champions. … Farmington had four champions, including Eric Orrell who won his third straight NWC title.
n SCC: In the closest finish in the tournament’s 13-year history, Hand won for the second time in three years with a close win over Amity. Hand had three champions in the well-balanced tournament along with three wrestlers who finished second, one that took third and two in fourth place. … Cheshire had three individual champions – Jed Cervero (103), Mike Breskin (112) and Rob Tomlinson (160) while Derby and Amity had two each. …
n Berkshire: Nonnewaug clinched its 10th league title in 12 years by finishing second. Gilbert had four individual champions and won three head-to-head matches with Nonnewaug in the finals to win the BL Tournament for the first time since 1995 with a 217-206½ win. Nonnewaug cut the lead to 2½ points at one point but Gilbert’s Tony Decato (125) won the tournament by pinning Nonnewaug’s Dave Wrigley in the final match of the tournament. … Wrestling for the first time since partially tearing ligaments in his knee in January, Gilbert’s Marshall Deane (285) won a BL title. … Terryville’s Justin Cronan (189, 38-1) and David Baldyga (215) each won their second straight BL titles. . … Host Thomaston went home with four champions. Collin Platt (160) got a takedown with 10 seconds left to outlast Housatonic’s Brad Visconti, 11-10 in a wild bout that earned Platt the outstanding wrestler award.
n NCCC: Avon had two champions, four finalists to win the NCCC Tournament and clinch its fourth league title in five years. “Our senior leadership came through today,” Falcon coach John McLaughlin said. … Mike Defeo (135) and Jared Marshall (160) won for Avon, which had six finalists and three wrestlers finish third. … Somers’ Troy Zackary (119) beat Avon’s Youngin Lim in a weight class with three former state champions
n Constitution State: Platt Tech/West Haven won the second CSC tournament with a league record eight champions, five which won by pin. PT/WH had 10 finalists and a tournament-record 245 points.

Wednesday, Feb. 6
Hall tops Conard for 1st title in 21 years
Hall-West Hartford (21-1, 4-0 CCC West) won four of the final five matches including a two-point decision and an OT win to beat cross-town rival Conard (19-8, 3-1) in for the first time since 1987 and win its first CCC West championship in 21 years with a 32-26 victory. … Bristol Central (23-0, 5-0 CCC South) finished undefeated for the first time in school history and won the CCC South championship for the second time in three years with a 33-21 win over archrival Bristol Eastern (17-6, 4-1). … Simsbury (19-9, 4-1 CCC North) had four pins and won nine matches to beat Glastonbury, 40-37 and clinch second place in the CCC North. … In its final NWC match, Farmington (25-6, 5-1 NWC) won nine of the first 10 weight classes to stun No. 6 Berlin, 32-29 and finish 5-1 in the league for the third straight year. FHS joins the CCC West next year. Farmington’s Ben Brody (189) had a key 4-1 victory, Sean O’Connell (215) escaped with two seconds left for a 3-2 victory and teammate Luke Walsh (125) outlasted Ryan Bisson, 3-2. …
With a school-record 27 wins, Middletown (27-2, 6-0 NWC) had seven pins to beat Plainville, 60-18 and capture its third straight NWC title but its first sole championship. The Dragons shared the title in 2006 and 2005. ... Avon (22-4, 7-0 NCCC) took a big step toward winning its third NCCC title in four years with a 39-21 win over Granby (12-8, 6-1). Avon can clinch the title with a top 3 finish at Saturday’s NCCC Tournament. …Hartford Classical (4-19, 2-3 CSC) beat University High of Hartford, 39-15 to win the Magnet Cup, a competition between magnet schools in the capital city. ... Gilbert (22-4) beat Holy Cross, 54-21 to finish with a school record 22 wins, snapping the old mark of 19 set in 1995. “They were a hungry bunch of guys with drive and determination,” Gilbert coach Doug Smith said. ...  Fairfield Ludlowe (16-11, 9-5 FCIAC) won the final five matches to erase a nine-point deficit and beat Ridgefield for the first time, 42-29 on Tuesday.

Tuesday, Feb. 5
League titles on the line Wednesday
Several league championships will be on the line on the last Wednesday night of the regular season. In the CCC South, No. 8 Bristol Central (22-0, 4-0 CCC South) will host archrival Bristol Eastern (17-5, 4-0 CCC South) on Wednesday at 6 p.m. with the league title on the line. It’s been 10 years since the two rivals met with the winner taking home the championship. In 1998, Central beat Eastern, 31-25 to claim the league title. …. In the CCC West, Conard (18-7, 3-0) hosts Hall (20-1, 3-0) with the championship on the line. Hall is seeking its first title since 1987. … In the NCCC, Granby (12-7, 6-0) hosts Avon (21-4, 6-0) as they seek their first league title since 2004.

Week 8 state coaches poll: Week 8 state coaches poll: New Milford moved up to No. 4 in the state coaches poll while Windham climbed to No. 5. Hand joined the top 10 replacing Southington at No. 10. The top three remained the same – Danbury, Ledyard and Middletown.
