TRUMBULL, Feb. 21 – The results were similar but the way that the top-ranked Danbury High wrestling team won a record 13th straight Class LL championship was a bit different. The Hatters won this tournament in the consolation round with solid wrestling. Dylan Bryant (103), Dylan Hancock (171) and John Smith (160) each lost early in the tournament but battled back to take third place.
Danbury had five individual champions and earned 252½ points while Xavier earned its first-ever CIAC championship trophy of any kind by taking second place with 218 points. South Windsor, with four individual champions, took third with 206 points.
Brian Jennings (112), Charlie Costanzo (119), Tucker Schaefer (145), Damien Winters (152) and J.D. Damici (125) won titles for Danbury. "We told them this week that this tournament was going to be won in how we wrestled back," Danbury coach Ricky Shook told the Danbury News Times. "That is what we did and that is what helped us win this tournament."
Jennings, who was seeded fourth, beat defending Class LL champion and top-seeded Doug Fontaine of Southington the semifinals with a solid 5-1 victory. In the finals, he beat No. 2 seed Jed Cervero of Cheshire, 6-1. At 125, Damici led 4-0 against Shelton’s Robert Ferrante but Ferrante’s reversal with 30 seconds left cut the lead to two but Ferrante couldn’t turn Damici to score any more points.
Schafer won his second straight Class LL title with a pin over No. 2 seed Jake O’Dell of South Windsor.
Xavier had 11 wrestlers earn medals by finishing in the top six and seven finished in the top four to earn berths at the State Open.
Abbatte won his second straight championship by pinning Amity's Michael Vernik at 140 pounds while Dan Thompson (171) dropped a 9-3 decision to two-time champion Patrick Sawyer of NFA. Chris Emanuelson (152) lost a tight 3-1 bout to Danbury's Winters.
Mohamed Chater (285) finished third while Ricky Jorge (112) and Tyler Cunningham (112) each took fourth.
South Windsor had five individual champions. Eliot Lopez (130), Joseph Sargenti (135), Michael Ingalls (189) and Seth Rothberg (275) won for the Bobcats.
Ingalls won a tight match to win his championship. He gave up a point for stalling with one second left in regulation to force overtime in his Class LL championship match with Southington’s Dillon Ritchie. But Ingalls didn’t panic and took Richie down 13 seconds into OT to earn a 5-3 victory.
Top-seeded Mike Monson of Southington remained undefeated (33-0) with a 9-7 win over Cheshire’s Kyle Copes to win the 160-pound weight class. … NFA’s Patrick Sawyer (171) also won his second straight Class LL championship.
TWO FOR ARNOLD: Simsbury High’s Lawton Arnold turned in a dominating performance to win his second straight Class LL championship at 215 pounds. Arnold earned a spot in the final with three straight pins (26 seconds, 40 seconds, 1:23). In the final, he beat Shelton’s Patrick Gillen, 6-1. Teammate Gordon Zachs (135) finished fourth while Josh Gowdy (140) was sixth. Simsbury finished 10th.
