Around the mat
The new varsity wrestling coach at Ledyard High is two-time New England champion Jason Lanoue, who won titles in 1990 and 1991 at 135 and 140 pounds, respectively. He takes over for Steve Bilheimer, who stepped down at the end of the season last spring. Lanoue also won two State Open titles and three Class M titles. Mike Heuschneider returns as assistant coach for the Colonials, who are the two-time defending Class M champions. Bilheimer is now coaching the Ledyard junior high program. … Minutes from the Seymour’s Board of Education meeting in September indicate that this will be the last year of the program. The BOE voted to accept a financial donation from parents to field the team but warned there should be no expectation that the program be reinstated. … Oxford and Westbrook/Old Saybrook will be fielding varsity teams this winter.  ... Bristol Central is organizing a wrestling alumni group to promote and celebrate the achievements of current and former wrestlers. A scholarship will be established for members of the wrestling team and their family members. The next meeting will be Mon. Dec. 15, during the annual Maroon and White preseason scrimmage at BC. The group is open to all alumni, friends, family and supporters of BC wrestling.

CCC adds seven schools in fall 2009
HARTFORD -- It’s been a busy fall for the Central Connecticut Conference which has accepted seven new schools beginning next fall in September 2009. Berlin, Middletown, Plainville, East Catholic, Northwest Catholic, RHAM and Rocky Hill from the Northwest Conference and Tolland from the NCCC are moving to the NCCC.

What will it mean for wrestling in 2009-10? New divisional alignments that may need to be tweaked since only six of the eight teams in the new CCC East field teams. The new proposed divisions for the 2010 season.

CCC South: Platt, Maloney, Berlin, Middletown, Bulkeley, Bristol Central, Bristol Eastern, Plainville.
CCC West: Southington, New Britain, Newington, Conard, Hall, Northwest Catholic, Farmington, Simsbury.
CCC North: Manchester, Glastonbury, East Hartford, South Windsor, Windsor, Weaver, Wethersfield, East Catholic.
CCC East: Bloomfield, E.O. Smith, Fermi, Hartford Public, RHAM, Rocky Hill, Tolland, Rockville.

Thanks to donation, Seymour program survives for now
SEYMOUR, Sept. 16 – Wrestling at Seymour High is alive at least for one more year. The wrestling program has been reinstated after a gift of $7,500 to the Board of Education, primarily from parents of the wrestlers. School board member Fred Stanek, who is chairman of the board’s athletics committee told the New Haven Register, “I think it’s admirable that parents are willing to come forward with the money.” However, the future may be dim for the program, which had just 15 wrestlers a year ago and expect 12 this year. With the opening of the new Oxford High, Seymour High will shrink to 700 students. Without tuition from the Oxford students, Seymour Superintendent MaryAnne Mascolo said, “It’s going to be very difficult to fund the breadth of programs that we have now."

n Plainville's Mario Acca (160) won the outstanding wrestler award at the Plainville Invitational after his 7-3 championship win over West Springfield's Ralph Marquez.
