Bacon captures first ECC championship
Bacon Academy won its first-ever ECC Tournament and captured the ECC Large Division championship with a six-point win over Ledyard, 192½ to 186½. Ryan Quinn (130) and Brian Webster (285) won titles for Bacon. Webster earned a crucial four points with his 13-6 win over Ledyard’s Alex Lawrence. Montville finished fourth and won the ECC Small Division title. … New Milford had four individual champions as the Green Wave won their sixth straight SWC title and seventh in the last eight years. … With six individual champions, Cheney Tech easily won the third Constitution State Conference Tournament by 70 points over Platt Tech/West Haven. Cheney’s Forest Dobly (125) was named Outstanding Wrestler. … Gilbert clinched its first Berkshire League title since 2001 by winning the BL Tournament for the second straight year. The Yellowjackets had nine finalists and four champions. Tore Lovetere (171) won his third title in four years. Housatonic’s Sam Schwartz (160) and Thomaston’s Fran Gelata (145) won for the third straight year. … At the 35th and final NWC Tournament, five Middletown wrestlers won titles including Outstanding Wrestler Victor Ekpenyong (112) to lead the Dragons to a five-point win over league champion Berlin, 184½-179½ . … At the first CCC West tournament, Conard had five finalists and two champions to outlast Farmington, 173½-154½ and win. Farmington had five champions led by Tim Orrell (103) and Eric Orrell (119), who beat Conard’s Marshall Simpson, 1-0. ... Avon clinched its fourth NCCC title in five years by winning the NCCC Tournament with nine finalists and seven champions. Eleven of Avon’s 14 varsity wrestlers finished in the top three of their respective weight class.

Wednesday, Feb. 11
Cheney captures first CSC crown
Cheney Tech (20-12, 6-0 CSC) set a school record for wins beating Platt Tech/West Haven, 43-30 to win its first Constitution State Conference title. Cheney’s Forest Dolby (125) improved to 33-7 with his 30th pin of the year. Four pins and two forfeits helped Cheney win the title. … No. 3 Bristol Central (22-1, 4-0) rallied from a nine-point deficit with two matches left to beat cross-town rival Bristol Eastern, 33-31 and win the CCC South title for the second straight year. Central’s Seth Vose (145) won by tech fall and Shea Conlon (152) pinned Dan Marquis in 3:20 to give the Rams the championship. Central also had a one-point win in 2003 and has won the last four matches in the series.… Canton (20-11, 6-1 NCCC) beat East Windsor, 70-12 to finish with 20 wins for the first time since 2002. … Gilbert (24-1, 6-0 BL) beat Holy Cross, 71-10 to set a new single season record for wins. The Yellowjackets broke the record of 22 set a year ago. Ross Lopardo (189) earned a 6-4 decision for his team-high 28th victory. … Simsbury beat Glastonbury, 35-29 as Lawton Arnold (215) finished the season undefeated at 33-0 with 24 pins. … Farmington (20-10, 4-1 CCC West) got some key pins to beat Wethersfield, 42-34. Eric Orrell (135) improved to 35-1 ... Berlin (15-6, 5-0 NWC) had five pins to beat RHAM, 52-19 to win the final NWC championship. … Hall (18-6, 5-0) won its second straight CCC West championship with a dominating 46-19 win over Conard. … Six pins helped Wolcott Tech catch Seymour, 42-41 in front a loud, home crowd. … Newtown’s John Gouveia (130) remained undefeated at 34-0 with a 4-3 win over Bethel’s Andrew Lischke but Bethel prevailed in the match with a 38-30 victory.

Tuesday, Feb. 10
Danbury rallies for win
Top-ranked Danbury erased an early 10-point deficit and won four of the final five bouts to beat No. 2 Fairfield Warde, 38-25 before a loud crowd in Danbury. Danbury has won its 260 straight match in Connecticut. They last lost a meet in the state in 1986 to Greenwich. "It never gets old," Danbury coach Ricky Shook told the Danbury News Times regarding being the hunted. "I love the pressure and the atmosphere. It's what these kids live to wrestle for and what I live to coach for."

Monday, Feb. 9
Top two teams meet Tuesday
No. 1 Danbury (14-2) takes on the last undefeated team in the state on Tuesday -- No. 2 Fairfield Warde (21-0) beginning at 5 p.m. at Danbury High. ... No new teams joined this week's state coaches poll this week. But Fairfield Warde moved up one spot to No. 2 and Bristol Central moved up two spots to No. 3. Waterford moved three spots to No. 7. Click on the following link for this week's state wrestling poll. ... Montville senior Jessica Bennett (103) is believed to be the first girl in state history to earn 100 career victories. Bennett is 31-3 this year for Montville (26-3), which beat New London, 77-6. ... Several league titles will be on the line Wednesday. Berlin (4-0, 14-6) can win the final NWC title with a win over RHAM. ... No. 3 Bristol Central (21-1, 3-0) can win the CCC South title with a win over cross-town rival Eastern (13-9, 2-1). ... In the CCC West, Hall (17-6, 4-0) is looking for its second straight league title with a win over Conard (18-11, 3-1). ... South Windsor (15-1, 3-0) can wrap up the CCC East championship with a win over Rockville (19-8, 2-1).
