New Milford easily handles Pomperaug

With six pins and a technical fall, No. 4 New Milford overwhelmed Pomperaug in a 54-16 decision in Southwest Conference action. … Six pins helped host Killingly beat Jonathan Law, 39-32 and capture the Christmas Duals at East Lyme. … The RHAM Duals was cancelled due to the freezing rain, sleet and ice forecast on Saturday. Freezing rain and snow blanketed much of the state during the night and was forecast to continue throughout Saturday. … Bristol Central dominated Guilford in the championship match to beat Guilford, 54-24 and win the 13th annual Fermi Duals in Enfield for the third straight year and fourth time in the last five years. Manchester finished third.

Fairfield Warde tops Section I champions John Jay High by 3

Key pins from Matt McDonald (152) and Alex Delaney (171) along with a 3-1 victory by Evan Fraser (125) helped No. 2 Fairfield Warde beat John Jay High of Cross River, N.Y., 37-34 on Wednesday night in Fairfield. John Jay won the New York State Section I title the past three seasons. John Jay won three of the last four matches but Delaney picked up a key pin at 171, pinning a desperate Wyatt Gilchrist in 5:45. Warde’s Ian McAllister (135) dropped his first bout of the season to Henry Strauber, 8-2 while teammate Michael Sullivan (160) lost his first match of the year. … Bacon Academy’s Dan Thompson (160) had a pin and Devin Covone (171) earned a decision to help the No. 2 Bobcats hold off surging Waterford, 32-28. The No. 5 Lancers won the final five matches of the bout to nearly steal the victory.... Berlin (2-0) used pins from Will Matuszak, Chad Keyworth and Anthony Squitieri in a 40-33 win over Maloney. … Six Southington wrestlers won by pin as the Blue Knights (2-0) beat Farmington, 52-24, in a CCC West bout. … Seven Newington wrestlers won by pin as the Indians improved to 5-0 with a win over visiting Hall, 54-21. … Simsbury’s Chris Brant (125) topped New Britain’s Bernard Wallen as the Trojans won their second match in as many nights with a 75-6 win over New Britain.

New Milford ends Danbury's long win streak in a thriller

DANBURY, Dec. 22 – The longest winning streak in Connecticut wrestling history is now over. No. 4 New Milford accomplished something that no other state team has achieved since 1996 with a 33-23 victory over the top-ranked Hatters Tuesday night. The Green Wave won the six of the final seven bouts of the match, outscoring Danbury, 24-3 to erase an 11-point deficit after seven matches.

It was a battle all night and New Milford earned three one-point decisions along the way. Danbury led 20-9 after seven bouts before New Milford’s Evan Renner (152) won by two and teammate Karl Bradshaw (160) won to cut the lead to five, 20-15. Danbury’s John Smith nipped New Milford’s Matt Saraceno by one, 7-6 to push the Hatter lead back to eight, 23-15.

But the Wave didn’t wilt. New Milford’s Brian Richman (189) nipped Eddie Garcia, 6-5 and at 215, Adam Lynch outlasted Danbury’s Dylan Hancock in triple OT, 5-4 to cut the lead to two. John Burns (285) won by pin and the Wave received an forfeit at 103 pounds to complete the victory.

Danbury (3-2) beat Stamford, 54-22 before falling to New Milford. Its winning streak against Connecticut teams ends at 262 consecutive matches. Danbury owns the state record for most overall wins in a row at 96 from 1996 to 2001.

No. 2 spot in top 10 poll

NORWICH, Dec. 21 – Despite losing to Mt. Anthony, Vt., by just one point on Friday night, 31-30, Danbury remains the unanimous No. 1 wrestling team in the state coaches top 10 poll. Bacon Academy and Fairfield Warde tied for the No. 2 spot in the poll. Bacon won the Indian Classic on Saturday while Warde beat No. 6 Xavier to win the Guilford Invitational. No. 4 New Milford won the Berlin Invitational for the first time on Saturday.
