No. 3 Bacon falls in West Side final

Facing two of the top five teams in Massachusetts, Bacon Academy (7-1) beat No. 5 Springfield Central, 36-34 in the semifinals of the West Side Duals in Springfield but lost in the championship match to No. 3 Franklin, Mass., 52-15 on Saturday night. Dylan Kniska (4-0), Aren Norman (4-0) and Nick Dodge (3-0) were undefeated on the day. The Bobcats also beat Spaulding, Vt., the No. 2 ranked team in Vermont. … Southington (8-3) went 2-2 at the West Side Duals (8-3) beating Ludlow, Mass., and Pinkerton Academy from New Hampshire. … No. 2 New Milford (13-0) rallied from a 26-point deficit to beat No. 6 Hand, 33-32 and win the Trumbull Duals championship. Hand won the first seven bouts with six decisions for a 26-0 lead. New Milford climbed back with pins by Karl Bradshaw (160) and Matt Saraceno (171), a one-point decision by Brian Richmond (189) and a pin by Adam Lynch (215) to cut the lead to five, 26-21. Hand received a pin to extend the lead to 11 with two matches left. But New Milford’s Connor Kirkegard (103) and Alex Thalassino (112) each came up with pins for the one-point victory. The Green Wave have won 23 in a row. … Avon (9-1) beat Simsbury, 35-23 with victories in three of the final five bouts to win its ninth straight match … Avon’s Mike Hogan (152) tied a state record with the fastest pin at 152 pounds with a 6-second pin against Terryville. … No. 4 Fairfield Warde easily captured the Warde Invitational with eight finalists and five champions. Brandon McBreairty (130), Ian Mcallister (135), Bobby Rigilano (145), Mike Sullivan (160), and Marcio Ventura (215) won for Warde. … No. 1 Danbury finished 11th in the Eastern States Classic in Loch Sheldrake, N.Y. in the field of 70 teams. Timberlane, N.H. was fifth. Danbury’s Charlie Costanzo (119) finished second, dropping a 1-0 decision to Nick Kelly of Shenedowa, N.Y. Costanzo won five decisions to earn a spot in the final. ... No. 8 Bristol Central had eight pins in a 51-26 win over No. 5 Waterford in the finals of the Whippet Invitational dual meet tournament. Windham took third with a 45-24 win over Jonathan Law. ... Wolcott Tech erased an early 18-point deficit to beat Stafford, 48-33 in the championship of the Northwestern Regional Duals. Tech went 4-0 and won its first Duals title since 2006 when it won the Connecticut Vo-Tech tournament.

MIDDLETOWN, Jan. 8 – Middletown High’s Jordan Tharp isn’t your ordinary high school senior. Thrap, who wrestles at 189 pounds for coach Mark Fong, is also an active member of the U.S. Army. He went through basic training last summer and will report back to the Army in June after graduation. Writer Jim Bransfield shares the details.

Danbury competing at Eastern States Classic

LOCH SHELDRAKE, N.Y., Jan. 8 -- Top ranked Danbury continues to challenges themselves. The Hatters will be competing Friday and Saturday at the Eastern States Classic at the Sullivan County Community College. Athletes from 70 teams will compete, including nine of the 14 returning New York state champions, and Timberlane, N.H. Click on the following link for the latest results and brackets.

Simsbury rallies for win over Berlin

Simsbury won seven of the final nine bouts of the evening to beat Berlin, 36-27. Connor Ciment (140), Josh Gowdy (145), Nick Stemm (152) and Ben Durst (103) came up with key victories down the stretch for Simsbury. With Simsbury leading by six, Durst earned a 3-2 decision in the final match. … With five pins and a key 5-4 OT decision from Alex Cieply at 171, Pomperaug outlasted Masuk, 34-30. … Thomaston (6-4, 1-2 BL) won eight of the 12 matches on the mat with five pins and a tech fall to hand Terryville (3-1, 2-1 BL) its first BL defeat, 44-27. …With seven pins and a tech fall, No. 1 Danbury (7-2) rolled to an easy 72-6 win over Staples. … The Hartford co-op team of University High and Sports Medicine Science Academy won its first varsity bout with a 42-23 win over Windham High. University was 0-11 a year ago. … No. 9 Bristol Central (7-0) won their 19 straight match with a 51-28 win over host Middletown. Six Rams won by pin … Westhill beat crosstown rival Stamford High for the first time in over 20 years with a 35-34 win on criteria, most first takedowns (8-6). Westhill’s Chris Chapatto (130) beat Tyler Kane, 10-7 in the final match to tie the bout at 34-34. … With Bacon trailing by three entering the final match, Aren Norman (189) let Ledyard’s Dakota Kelly escape with 42 seconds left in the third and took him down with 15 seconds left to earn a major decision, earn four points instead of three and lift No. 3 Bacon Academy to a 32-31 win over No. 9 Ledyard. The Colonels would have won on a tiebreaker if the match had finished tied because Bacon had more forfeits. There were five lead changes including three in the final three bouts. …Trailing by 26 points, Cheney Tech picked up two forfeits, two pins and a 17-5 win over Victor Sanchez (140) to rally and beat Vinal Tech, 40-38. Sanchez was nearly pinned at the end of the second period but he survived to earn the win. …

Danbury regains No. 1 spot in coaches poll

NORWICH, Jan. 4 – That was quick. Danbury reclaimed its No. 1 spot in the state coaches poll this week. Danbury received nine first place votes and 288 points to finish ahead of New Milford, which received six first place votes and 278 total points. Danbury held the No. 1 spot for 105 weeks dating back to the 1998-99 season before New Milford claimed the top spot a week ago. Bacon Academy, Fairfield Warde and Waterford remained in the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 spots.

Coelho fundraiser in Milford

MILFORD – A fundraiser for Bill Coelho and his family will be held on Saturday, Jan. 30, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 625 Bridgeport Avenue in Milford. Bill and his wife, Deb, ran the Milford Indians wrestling club for the Milford Recreation Department for many years. Bill has been battling lung cancer, which has taken a financial toll on their family. Proceeds from the event will benefit the family. Click here for more information.
