Win in final gives Westerly title at Brawl

Taylor Caputo’s (152) win over Ridgefield’s Travis Tiger in the final lifted Westerly, R.I. to a 2½ point win over RHAM at the 4th annual Brawl at the Pub tournament in Hartford. Alex Stratton (103) and Eric Brainard (171) each won titles for RHAM but the Sachems had two other wrestlers that lost in the finals and three that lost in the consolation finals. East Lyme’s Josh Ross (135) earned outstanding wrestler honors. … With nine champions and 12 finalists, No. 5 Bacon Academy easily captured the first Bobcat Classic, beating Terryville and E.O. Smith. … Seven Shelton wrestlers went 4-0 on the afternoon as the No. 9 Gaels (20-3) picked up four wins at the John Chaco Duals at Staples. Greenwich also went 4-0 in the tournament but a championship match between the two schools wasn’t held. … Farmington (18-13) earned its 15th win in the last 20 matches with three victories Saturday. The Indians beat Pomperaug, 39-26 and topped Seymour, 43-32 and Branford, 46-19. Pomperaug has won 21 matches. With three wins, Farmington’s Sean O’Connell (189) extended his school record for career wins (134). He broke the old mark set by Eric Orrell (126) last year. … Middletown beat Southington, 34-33 on criteria by earning more first points (12-9) than the Knights. … Plainville won the Groundhog Duals for the fifth time and first time since 2006 with a 42-34 decision over South Windsor in the championship match. ... Canton’s Rich Jones (160, 35-2) had two pins at the Groundhog Duals. With 27 pins, he is four shy of the school record. The state record for pins in a season is 41. … Newington (19-9) won three matches and beat host Hall-West Hartford, 40-31 to win the Warrior Duals. … Bristol Eastern (16-2) won four matches, including a 47-20 win over Nonnewaug in the finals to win the fourth annual New Fairfield Duals. They are the first Connecticut team to win the tournament. ... Bristol Central, Montville and Cheshire finished first, second and third, respectively at the Centaur Invitational hosted by Woodstock Academy. Jed Cervero (125) and Kyle Copes (171) won titles for Cheshire while Jason Richardson (119) and Ted Kostopoulos (215) won titles for Jonathan Law.

No. 2 New Milford

is one win shy of undefeated season

Conor Kirkegard (103) improved to 31-0 while teammate Adam Lynch (189, 31-4) and Anthony Terlizzi (140, 32-7) picked up wins as No. 2 New Milford (20-0, 11-0 SWC) moved one win away from an undefeated season with a 67-6 win over Oxford. New Milford, who have won 30 straight, close the dual meet season at New Fairfield next Wednesday. .. Southington (12-3, 6-0 CCC West) won nine of the first 11 bouts to beat Simsbury, 39-37 and clinch its fourth straight conference title. The Knights won two CCC North titles (2009, 2008) and a CCC South title (2007). …. Canton beat Granby, 58-24 to give coach Bill Phelps his 296th career victory in his final home match as head coach after 27 years behind the bench. … With five pins, New Canaan won seven of 12 matches on the mat to beat Brien McMahon, 43-32 and set a new school record for most wins in a season (22-3). …. With wins in the final three bouts, Conard (17-9) rallied to beat Newington, 35-30 in CCC West action. ... Fairfield Ludlowe’s Mike Sheehan (189) won his 28th match of the season and the 109th of his career to lead Ludlowe to a 52-26 win over Harding. ... … Avon (20-5, 6-0 NCCC) won its 20th straight NCCC bout with a 61-13 win over Enfield and won for the 40th time in its last 41 league matches dating back to 2005. … … Bacon Academy (14-4, 6-0 ECC Large) finished undefeated in the Large Division with a 54-19 win over East Lyme. … Waterford’s Shane Battista beat Windham’s Brandon Koch, 6-4 in OT as Waterford slipped past Windham, 38-37. … Platt Tech/West Haven (13-13, 5-0 CSC) remained unbeaten in the Constitution State Conference with a 48-32 victory over Vinal Tech. PT/WH will face Cheney Tech (5-0 CSC) for the league title next Wednesday in Manchester. … Masuk coach Matt Morelli earned his 200th career win in Masuk’s 32-28 victory over Bethel. ... Bill Coelho, director of the Milford Wrestling Club for 25 years, died on Wednesday, Feb. 3.

Late pins lift Greenwich

Greenwich won three of the final five bouts with two pins to outlast Stamford, 35-28. With the Cardinals leading by one, junior Johnny D’Elia (112) earned a pin in the final match to clinch the win. … No. 4 Xavier improved to 17-3 with a dominating 62-9 SCC win over Guilford.

Danbury knocks Wave from No. 1 spot in poll

NORWICH, Feb. 1 – New Milford extended its undefeated record to 19-0 with victories this winter over Danbury, Fairfield Warde, Hand and Bristol Central. All four teams are in the top six teams in the state.

Yet, a loss to Danbury in Danbury’s holiday tournament and a second place finish to Bacon Academy in Saturday’s MassConn Fusion tournament has New Milford back in the No. 2 spot in the state coaches poll. Danbury received nine first place votes to regain the top spot after a two-week absence while the Green Wave had six votes. Xavier moved up one spot to No. 4 – its highest ranking of the season while Bacon Academy leapt from eighth to fifth. The rest of the top 10 is at this link.
