Green Wave swamps Greenwich to win New Milford tourney

With five individual champions, top-ranked New Milford won its 29th annual tournament with a dominating victory. The Green Wave beat No. 9 Greenwich by 118 points. Brookfield’s Alex Neal (130) was the most outstanding wrestler. New Milford’s Nick Amorando (125) became the first New Milford wrestler and fourth athlete to win the tournament four times. Shelton’s Patrick Gillen was ill and did not wrestle. … Farmington (16-1) was dominate in winning the Charter Oak Duals in Wethersfield with wins over Conard, Wethersfield and Terryville. … Trumbull’s Brandon Liscinsky (112) had four pins while Tim Douthit (135/140) and Ben Anderson (135/140) each had three wins and a tech fall to lead Trumbull to four victories and the championship in the Legends Duals at Fairfield Ludlowe for the third straight year. … Ludlowe finished third at the Legends Duals with a 33-32 win over Hall as Peter Clark (125) got a takedown the final second to give him a 4-3 decision. Teammate Ben Brzoski (152) had a 6-5 win in the final match. … With four victories, Jonathan Law improved to 20-2. … No. 4 Hand topped Middletown, 52-18 to win the Morgan Duals for the second straight year. Waterford beat Amity, 44-31 to finish third. … No. 6 Bacon Academy beat two Massachusetts teams ranked in the top 10. Bacon beat No. 7 Framingham, 52-20 and No. 7 St. John’s Prep, 34-22. Top-ranked Springfield Central beat the Bobcats, 44-20. … Haddam-Killingworth went 5-0 to capture the Somers Duals. The Cougars did beat host Somers, 52-27. … For the first time in 14 years, Mt. Anthony, Vt., didn’t attend the Eagle Classic. No. 8 South Windsor had two individual champions and four finalists to slip past Berlin, 175-172. Griswold’s Brandon Walsh (140) outlasted South Windsor’s Casey Mitchell, 5-3 in the final and was named the most outstanding wrestler while South Windsor’s Sam O’Dell (119) earned a 2-0 win over Glastonbury’s Cody Keane.

Hall of Fame offering college scholarships

The Connecticut Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame is proud to announce the creation of three $500 scholarships for deserving high school wrestlers in Connecticut.

The chapter is offering three scholarships – a scholar/athlete scholarship, a career achievement scholarship and the Erik Weihenmayer scholarship for overcoming exceptional adversity. Deadline to apply for the scholarships is Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011. The scholarships will be awarded during the State Open in New Haven.

Nonnewaug moves closer to another title

Terryville cut an 18-point lead to seven but Nonnewaug (15-2, 5-0 BL) won the final three matches to earn a 46-23 victory and move to the doorstep of its 12th Berkshire League title in the last 15 years. Nonnewaug would have to finish fourth or worse in the BL Tournament to lose the title, an unlikely result. …. Trumbull (14-3, 6-1 FCIAC) won 11 of 14 weight classes in a 62-18 victory over Ridgefield as THS coach Charlie Anderson earned his 200th career victory. ... CT Wrestling Wire has released its second set of individual rankings for 2011. ... Top-ranked New Milford will be looking to win its tournament record 12th New Milford Tournament championship when they host the 29th annual event on Saturday, Jan. 22, beginning at 10 a.m. Teams competing in the tournament with New Milford include No. 9 Greenwich, Darien, Brookfield, Cheshire, E.O. Smith, Guilford, Holy Cross, Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech, Platt Tech/West Haven, Ridgefield, Seymour and Shelton.

No. 4 Hand stuns Xavier with rally

No. 4 Hand rallied from a 30-point deficit and won eight straight matches, using a pin from Welles Sakmar (140) in the final bout to stun No. 3 Xavier, 34-30. … With five pins and nine wins, Darien (14-3) rolled to a 43-22 victory over Wilton in an FCIAC contest. … Out eight matches contested on the mat, New Fairfield had four pins and a tech fall to slip past Pomperaug (8-4, 6-2 SWC) by a 41-39 score. It was the Rebels’ first win over Pomperaug since 2006. Pomperaug had three pins and one decision … After Simsbury won two of the first three matches, Conard (10-9, 1-2 CCC West) had eight victories including four pins in the final 11 bouts to pull away from Simsbury, 49-20 in a CCC West contest. … Berlin won four of the final five matches to erase a nine-point deficit to beat Bristol Central, 39-36 in a CCC South match. Anthony Vinci (189), Mason Powers (215) and Ethan Greider (103) had key pins for Berlin to lift the Redcoats. Richie Schlichting (112) beat Central’s Matt Trelli, 6-0 in the final match to clinch the win…. With nine pins, Avon (6-6, 4-0 NCCC) beat East Windsor, 72-9 to win its 24th straight league match. …Amity won two of the final three bouts with Colby Shaeffer (152) earning a four-point win over Liam Cummings and Jeff Najmowicz getting a pin to lead Amity to a 43-32 victory over Shelton (8-5). Shelton’s Pat Gillen (215) remained undefeated at 23-0 while teammate Ed Hunt (140) improved to 21-1 and Sean Kellett (119) improved to 20-3.

Mt. Anthony pins Danbury with defeat

In the 11th meeting between the two New England rivals, host Mt. Anthony, Vt., handed No. 2 Danbury a 43-12 defeat Monday night in Bennington. It was the fourth win in the last five years for the Patriots, who lead the overall series, 8-3. “They outwrestled us. They wanted it more than our guys," Danbury coach Rick Shook told the Bennington Banner. "We lost too many one-point matches and gave them away." … Farmington improved to 12-1 with a dominant 74-3 win over a young Rocky Hill team. … No. 3 Xavier lost two of the first three bouts but recovered to beat Amity, 62-15 in a SCC contest. …. Thomaston improved to 8-2 with a 51-25 Berkshire League win over Gilbert.

Bobcats make largest leap in top 10 poll

Bacon Academy made the largest leap this week in the Norwich Bulletin’s top 10 wrestling poll, moving up two spots to No. 6 after a tough loss to No. 1 New Milford. The top four remained the same (New Milford, Danbury, Xavier, Hand) although Danbury is getting closer. Bristol Eastern moved up one spot to No. 5.
