Windham slips past Montville at Centaur
A pair of one-point decisions by Windham High’s Brandon Koch (189) and Xavier Kermozek (275) lifted the Whippets to a two-point victory over Montville, 239½ to 237½ at the Centaur Invitational in the tightest margin of victory in tournament history. Kermozek beat Montville’s Ryan Murtha in the final, 2-1. Koch outlasted Ridgefield’s Duncan Cozens, 8-7. Windham did have nine finalists. At 130, Pomfret’s R.J. LaBeef beat Windham’s Miguel Calixto, 6-4, to earn outstanding wrestler honors. … Seven Greenwich wrestlers went 4-0 and five went 3-1 to lead No. 9 Greenwich to four victories at the John Chacho Duals in Westport and a championship. Greenwich (14-2) slipped past Westhill, who was also 4-0, on criteria (point differential). Mark Chien (103), Johnny D’Elia (112), Matt Diddell (130), David Laborda (140), Ben Ceci (189), Joey McGuire (215) and Kyle Camacho (285) each had four wins. … Shelton (11-7) went 3-1 in the tournament as Patrick Gillen went 4-0 to earn his 183rd career win, fifth highest in state history. .. The challenging winter of 2010-11 claimed one of the season’s marquee matches. Forecasts for snow, rain and ice on Saturday forced the cancellation of the match between No. 2 Danbury (12-1) at No. 1 New Milford (20-0). It would have been the first dual meet since the Green Wave ended Danbury’s 262-match winning streak against Connecticut opponents in December 2009. … Bacon Academy cancelled its Bobcat Classic while No. 5 Ledyard canceled a four-team meet with No. 6 Xavier, Southington and Middletown. ... With two wins, Haddam-Killingworth (22-6) set a new school record for most wins in a season.

No. 10 Warde is perfect 6-0 in week
With three wins over Middletown, Fitch and Masuk, No. 10 Fairfield Warde finished the week undefeated (6-0) and improved its overall record to 18-5. … Fairfield Ludlowe won five of nine matches on the mat and took advantage of five forfeits to win its 10th match of the year with a 56-16 win over Bunnell. … To avoid the forecast of rain, snow and ice on Saturday, four teams held a rare Friday night quad match. Farmington (24-2) swept with wins over Seymour (71-6), Branford (66-3) and Pomperaug (57-19). Eric Suhre (103) had three pins for Farmington. … Pomperaug won one of three matches, dropping a 34-33 decision to Branford on criteria (more individual wins).

Win places Indians in position to win title
Ryan Rigney (135) earned a 3-1 decision and James Paigo (140) won by pin to clinch Farmington’s 36-30 victory over Newington. The win puts Farmington (21-2, 4-1 CCC West) in a position to win a share of the league title with a win over Simsbury on Wednesday, Feb. 9 on the road. … With wins in the final two matches, Southington (7-3, 4-1 CCC West) rallied from a three-point deficit to beat Simsbury, 36-30. Southington can clinch a share of the CCC West crown with a win over New Britain on Wednesday. … Lars Remole (140) won by tech fall to become the fourth wrestler in Darien history to win 100 matches as the Blue Wave swamped Harding, 53-22. The win enables Darien (20-3) to win at least 20 matches for the first time in school history. …Avon (13-8, 6-0 NCCC) swept a pair of league bouts with a 61-13 win over Suffield and a 67-12 win over Enfield. The Falcons have won 26 straight league matches. … No. 5 Ledyard (17-1, 6-0 ECC Large) beat NFA to finish undefeated in the ECC Large Division. The Colonels also handed Griswold (11-1) their first loss of the season in a 46-19 decision. … No. 4 Bacon Academy (14-5, 5-1 ECC Large) secured second place in the ECC Large Division with a 54-16 win over Waterford. … No. 7 Bristol Eastern (9-2, 3-0 CCC South) won the final three matches to pull away from Berlin (15-6, 3-1 CCC South) in a key conference bout, 34-27. Peyton Soucy (103) won by pin to give Eastern a 30-27 leadand Andrew Chase (112) followed with a match-clinching pin. Josh Dess (119) also won by pin for Eastern. … Fairfield Warde’s Alex Delaney (171) earned his 100th career win as Fairfield Warde (15-5) beat Brien McMahon, 54-18.

No. 10 Warde rallies
to beat Trumbull by 3
No. 10 Fairfield Warde rallied from a 24-point deficit and won seven of the next nine matches to outlast Trumbull, 37-34. After giving up 4 straight pins, Warde’s Danny Almeida’s win in OT at 119 to begin a streak of five consecutive wins to give Fairfield Warde the lead. Trumbull slips to 21-4 while Warde improves to 14-5. … No. 1 New Milford (19-0) had six pins and six forfeits to beat Weston, 75-6 and capture their school-record 50th consecutive match. ... No. 3 Hand won its 10th straight match with a 54-12 victory over Jonathan Law (23-3, 1-2 SCC Large). Hand improves to 22-1 and 3-0 in SCC Large. ... Bristol Central received six pins in a 50-21 win over Platt High. ... For the sixth straight week, New Milford is No. 1 in the Norwich Bulletin's state coaches poll. The Green Wave picked up an additional two first place votes after its win at the MassConn Fusion tournament. New Milford will host No. 2 Danbury for a big match on Saturday at 6 p.m. Bacon Academy moved up two spots to No. 4 and Ledyard moved up two places to No. 5.
