Sunday, Feb. 12
No. 2 Xavier outworks No. 3 Hand to win SCC
With eight finalists and six individual champions, Xavier outworked Hand, 203½ to 192 to win the Southern Connecticut Conference title Sunday. The win came only four days after Hand ended the regular season with a 38-25 win over Xavier. Shelton was a distant third with 94½ points. Xavier won its second straight SCC championship by winning six of eight matches in the finals. Hand, which led by one point going into the finals, won three of seven matches in the finals. Xavier won 2 of 3 head-to-head battles with Hand. Will Chowanec (113) won by tech fall and Elliott Antler (170) won by 10. Hand’s Jake Savoca (145) earned a 7-1 victory. Xavier’s Brendan Butler was seeded fourth but he won at 138 while teammate Nishan Valentini (152) won by 1 to win a title. Shelton’s Sean Kellett (126) was the outstanding wrestler. ... New Milford won its ninth straight SWC title and 11th overall with a dominating performance. Green Wave Conor Kirkegard won to become just the third wrestler to win four SWC titles. …  Ledyard had just two individual champions but they had 13 wrestlers finish in the top four of their weight classes and all 14 wrestlers finished in the top 6 as the Colonials won the ECC championship. Windham’s Miquel Calixto won his third straight ECC title and his 37th straight match to earn outstanding wrestler honors. ... Avon clinched the NCCC championship for the seventh time in eight years with a dominating performance with 7 finalists, 6 champions and 257½ points, just 3½ points shy of the league record Avon set in 1989. Avon's Joey Murphy (170) was named outstanding wrestler and won the fast fall award while teammate Jessica McCamish (106) had 2 pins and became the first girl to win a NCCC title.

Saturday, Feb. 11
Terryville wins first BL tournament in 25 years
With 11 finalists and five individual champions, Terryville won the Berkshire League Tournament for the first time since 1987 with a 200-176 win over Nonnewaug. By finishing second, Nonnewaug clinched its 9th BL title in 11 years. Scott LaMarre (160) won his 3rd straight BL title with 9 takedowns in a 21-6 win by tech fall. Thomaston’s Tyler Margiston (285) and Nonnewaug’s Austin Hodges (132) and Quentin Mylie (113) won their 2nd straight BL title. ... Danbury returned to the top of the FCIAC tournament with a dominating win over Fairfield Warde, 333-189½. It's the highest score in the tournament this century. Danbury had 11 wrestlers in the finals and nine came home as champions. Warde had 5 finalists and 12 of 14 wrestlers win medals. At 170, Stamford’s Miguel Nieto (170) beat top seeded Ryan Whittle of Greenwich, 4-2 on a late takedown. Stamford’s Ben St. Pierre (132) won his second straight FCIAC crown.

2012 ECC Tournament seeds

Friday, Feb. 9
Snow knocks out some league tournaments
The forecast of snow across Connecticut on Saturday has cancelled conference tournaments in five league and delayed wrestling in Conference tournaments. Forecasts are calling for 1-to-4 inches, primarily Saturday morning. The CCC West, CCC North, CCC South and CCC East tournament have been cancelled along with the Constitution State Conference.

The NCCC (Suffield), SCC (Hand) and SWC (New Milford) tournament will have been delayed until Sunday with the NCCC and SCC beginning at noon and the SWC at 12:30 p.m. The Berkshire League will try to wrestle Saturday in Thomaston but will reassess the situation at 10 a.m.

The FCIAC and ECC got underway on Friday night. The ECC tournament will conclude on Sunday beginning at noon at Fitch. The FCIAC tournament will try to conclude on Saturday beginning at noon. Updates on the status of the FCIAC tournament can be found at the New Canaan High sports website.

Brackets of Friday’s action in the FCIAC and ECC tournament are in the score list. Danbury leads Fairfield Warde by 21 points in the FCIAC tournament while Ledyard has a substantial 38-point lead over Windham in the ECC tournament.

Coaches seeding meetings at CIAC headquarters in Cheshire have been postponed until Tuesday and Wednesday. The brackets for the respective classes should be posted on the CIAC website shortly after the meetings conclude.

No. 3 Hand tops No. 2 Xavier to win SCC DIvision A crown
Before a crowd of 500, No. 3 Hand beat No. 2 Xavier, 38-25 to win the SCC Division A title Wednesday. “They took it to us and we backed down,” Xavier coach Mike Cunningham told the Middletown Press. “We came out like a ball of fire, then sizzled out. We didn’t wrestle well.” Trailing 6-3 after two matches, Hand (22-1, 5-0) won 7 of the next 8 to seize control. …With five pins, Southington (19-2, 6-0) clinched its third straight CCC West championship with a 42-25 victory over New Britain. It was Southington’s sixth league title in the last six years. … Three pins by Bristol Eastern (15-5, 6-0) made the difference in a 33-23 victory over arch-rival Bristol Central (15-3, 5-1) to capture the CCC South championship for the second straight year. Each team won seven matches but Eastern got the key pins and an extra nine points. Central had no pins. Six matches were decided by three points or less. … With the help of five forfeits and four pins, Wolcott Tech (16-7, 4-0 CSC) beat Vinal Tech, 54-28 to win its first-ever league championship. It was the second league title in school history in all sports and the first since 1976. …… Foran (20-11, 5-0) won 10 of 14 weight classes, including five by forfeit to win the SCC B Division title with a 57-18 victory over Cheshire. … After Canton cut the lead to one point, Suffield (9-6, 6-2 NCCC) picked up a forfeit and had five straight wins to earn a 41-27 win. … Glastonbury (24-3, 6-0) won its first league title since 2004 with a 59-18 win over East Hartford to take the CCC North. ... Hall won three of the final four bouts but Conard’s Johnny Bello earned a 9-2 decision in the final match at 145 pounds to clinch a 37-31 victory for Conard in the battle of West Hartford. Alex Jojin (160) picked up a key 3-1 win over Alex Stott for the Chieftains. . A battered E.O. Smith squad outlasted RHAM, 35-30 to win its first-ever league championship in the CCC East. Jessie Lusa (145) came up with a big win for the Panthers (14-9, 5-0) who have had eight wrestlers break bones and two tear ligaments this season. … Farmington’s Tyler Strauss had a pin to earn his 100th career victory as Farmington (27-1, 5-1 CCC West) finished the season with a 48-9 win over Simsbury. The Indians finish two wins shy of their single season record of 29 set in 2007. …

Tuesday, Feb. 7
League titles on the line on Wednesday
Several conference titles are on the line on Wednesday night. Bristol Eastern (14-5, 5-0) travels to Bristol Central (15-2, 5-0) with the CCC South crown hanging in the balance and in the CCC East, RHAM (14-13, 4-0) hosts E.O. Smith (12-9, 4-0) in a battle for that championship. In the SCC Division A, Xavier (23-1, 4-0) hosts Hand (21-1, 4-0) in a duel for that championship banner. In the Constitution State Conference, Wolcott Tech (15-7, 3-0) can win its first-ever league title with a victory over Vinal Tech (5-7, 3-0) in Torrington. Southington can clinch its third straight CCC West championship outright with a win over New Britain and Glastonbury (23-3, 5-0) can secure the CCC North title with a win over East Hartford. Foran (19-11, 4-0) can clinch the SCC Division B title with a win over Cheshire.

Monday, February 6
Danbury stops Mt. Anthony in a thriller
With a pin in the final bout at 220 pounds, top ranked Danbury beat Mt. Anthony, Vt., for the first time since 2008 with a 33-26 decision Monday in Danbury. The Hatters (20-0) handed the Patriots (14-1) their first loss of the season and snapped a 90 dual meet winning streak dating back to 2009. Danbury won five of the final six matches to erase an eight-point deficit. Johnny Garcia (152) and Ryan Peterson (160) earned wins and Wesley Spears (170) won by pin to give Danbury its second lead of the night at 24-20. Will Jack’s 8-6 overtime win over Cameron Foosha at 170 extended Danbury’s lead to seven, 27-20. Mt. Anthony cut the lead to one, 27-26, when the Hatters stopped Tyler Hancock’s match after he was injured. So it came down to the final match and Danbury’s Eddie Garcia (220) pinned Alex Cross in 3:33 for the victory. MAU still leads the overall series, 8-4. … With five pins and eight wins, Windham High finished undefeated in the ECC Small Division with a 46-30 win over Griswold. The Whippets are 23-3 and 6-0 in ECC Small. … Undefeated Danbury remained on top of the latest state coaches poll. There were no new teams in the top 10 although Southington moved up to three spots to No. 6, Bristol Eastern moved up one to No. 7 while Windham rose two spots to No. 8 … Full brackets for the Doc Myers Hartford Brawl have been posted among Saturday’s results along with results from the JV Worlds tournament in Fairfield.
