Jack named state wrestler of the year
SOUTHINGTON, March 10 – Danbury High junior Kevin Jack was named the state wrestler of the year in balloting by coaches from around the state at the Connecticut High School Coaches Association’s annual All-State banquet Sunday at the AquaTurf Restaurant.

Danbury, which won the Class LL championship and the State Open championship, was recognized as the state’s team of the year.

Xavier’s Elliot Antler was recognized as Scholar Athlete of the year with a $500 scholarship from the ABMA Foundation in Meriden, an organization that recognizes the heroic effort of the late Alberta Baumgart to fight breast cancer.

Wrestlers that won State Open, Class LL, Class L, Class M and Class S championships were honored along with over 150 wrestlers earning Academic All-State honors for finishing in the top six of their respective weight class and having an average over 85.

Jack went undefeated this season with a record of 42-0 – the first Danbury wrestler to accomplish that feat since Demain Dillard went 46-0 in 1990. “With the schedule we wrestle, that is impressive,” Danbury coach Ricky Shook said.

Jack won the Class LL championship, the State Open title and the New England championship. At the New England meet, Jack gave up just one point in four wins, including two pins. He outscored his opponents 23-0 in the semifinals and championship match.

He is the fourth Danbury wrestler to win state wrestler of the year honors since 1996.

Antler (46-0) won his first New England title with a 9-1 win over Jared Jensen of Brunswick, Maine. He won the State Open and earned his third straight Class LL championship.
