Ledyard's depth helps Colonels win BC Invitational
No. 2 Ledyard had only one individual champion but they had four wrestlers in the finals and four other wrestler finish third to outlast No. 4 Farmington, 202½ to 185 and win the 31st annual Bristol Central Invitational for the fifth time and second year in a row. Farmington had five finalists and one champion. No. 10 New Milford had four individual champions. Terryville’s undefeated Avery Ellegard (138) was voted most outstanding wrestler after his pin of Ledyard’s Justin Timberlake. … A strong performance by No. 6 Simsbury in the consolation bracket lifted the Trojans to a seven-point win over No. 4 Fairfield Warde, 231-224 at the fifth annual Fairfield Warde Invitational. Simsbury had two individual champions and five finalists. They also had four wrestlers finish third. Warde, led by outstanding wrestler Pharoah Eaton (130), had five champions and eight finalists. … With seven pins, No. 5 Windham (12-2) beat Guilford, 44-27 to win the fourth annual Whippet Duals for the third straight year. Berlin beat Waterford to finish third. …No. 11 Glastonbury topped Nanuet, N.Y., 43-31 to grab the fourth annual Trumbull Duals championship. The Tomhawks edged host Trumbull (11-4) in pool play, 36-31. … In Sanford Maine, Timberlane N.H., the reigning five-time New England champion, had 10 finalists and four champions to win the Spartan Wrestling Annual Tournament. The Owls had enough to get past No. 1 Danbury, 265½ to 248½ en route to winning the team title with 265.5 points. Danbury had four individual champions and six finalists. … Greenwich’s Grant Cucchissi (182) finished third at the 49th annual Ted Murphy Shoreline Tournament at New Rochelle, NY with a 5-2 decision over Casey Fazio of Lidenhurst, N.Y. Cucchissi was the only Cardinal in the semifinals and one of three to make it to the quarterfinal round. … … Bacon Academy’s Matt McAllister went 4-0 and earned his 100th career win as Bacon Academy went 1-3 at the West Side Duals in Springfield. Southington went 2-2 at the event and finished fifth. … Somers (11-3) went 5-0 to capture its own Mid-Season Duals. … In a round-robin tournament at Northwestern, Plainville outlasted Canton and E.O. Smith. … Old Lyme’s Lyiam Mathis (113) and H-K’s Nathan Derita (95) were the only Connecticut champions at the Chad Antoch Memorial Tournament in Westerly, R.I. ... With four wins at Saturday's New Year's Classic in South Windsor, Lucas Muntz became the all-time leader in career wins at Conard with 138 victories. ... With four individual champions, Mt. Hope, RI won the John Lawless Invitational in Woodbury over Derby, 190-154. Derby had four finalists and two champions.

No. 6 Simsbury rallies to beat Glastonbury
No. 6 Simsbury (5-0) won the final five matches of the evening to erase a seven-point deficit and beat Glastonbury, 39-25. Leading 27-25, Simsbury’s Brandon Molnar (182) and Jacob Feldman (195) won with pins to clinch the match. Tyler Stemm (152) and Ed Novak (160) picked up crucial one-point victories for Simsbury. … For the competition, Danbury’s Kevin Jack moved up to 126 pounds and beat Trumbull’s Brandon Liscinsky, 5-3 in OT as No. 1 Danbury remained undefeated with a 47-15 victory.  … Newington got a late pin to slip past New Britain, 37-31. … New Fairfield didn’t forget a 40-point loss to Newtown a year ago. The Rebels (7-1, 6-0 SWC) had seven pins as they dominated Newtown in a 57-21 victory. … Six Mt. Anthony, Vt. wrestlers won by pin to lead the Patriots to a 56-11 win over South Windsor. Former Windham High star Miguel Calixto (132) had a pin for MAU. … No. 3 Fairfield Warde remained undefeated (8-0) with nine pins in a dominating 69-9 decision over Brien McMahon. … No. 4 Farmington (12-0) opened the its CCC West season with a 46-18 win over Conard. Harry Pacheco, Brandon Marquis, Chris Thomas and Garrett Hastings had key pins. … Fairfield Ludlowe (11-3) had four pins in a 54-19 win over New Canaan. Ludlowe freshman Bobby Clark (126) earned a tough 7-5 win over Kevin Hall, who was an FCIAC finalist a year ago. … It was Alumni Night and No. 9 Southington sent the fans home happy with a 48-27 victory over Hall. Southington (7-1) had five pins, three in under a minute. … Even without four starters out with injuries, Norwalk earned its first win of the season with a 41-36 decision over Wilton.

International tourney named after late Newtown wrestler
NEWTOWN, Jan. 3 -- A major international Greco-Roman wrestling dual meet competition, will be renamed the Jack Pinto Cup, in loving memory of the 6-year-old wrestler who was tragically killed in the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown in December. Held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, it features 4 senior-level U.S. teams against 4 international teams in dual meets. The event is Jan. 26. Jack, 6, was a first-year member of the Newtown Youth Wrestling Association and USA Wrestling. In a statement, the Pinto family said, “We are overwhelmed at your generous offer and thoughts for our beloved Jack. We have been simply stunned at the outpouring of support from the wrestling community, which we now realize is our wrestling family. While our Jack was new to wrestling, he approached it as he approached all of life; with the unbridled enthusiasm that made him Jack.”

Green Wave swamps Mustangs in SWC play
No. 10 New Milford had 10 pins to lead the undefeated Green Wave to a 64-15 victory over Immaculate/Joel Barlow in SWC action Wednesday night. … Masuk and Pomperaug each won seven bouts with four pins each but Masuk received a key win from Otto Velez at 160 to help beat the Panthers, 39-36.

Top 3 teams remain stable in state poll
The top three teams in the latest state coaches poll, as compiled by the Norwich Bulletin, remain intact. Undefeated Danbury (5-0) is the top ranked team followed by Ledyard and Fairfield Warde. Farmington (11-0) moves up to No. 4 -- its highest ever ranking in the poll. New Milford joined the top 10 this week at No. 10. ... Somers coach Scott Zachary earned his 100th career victory in a win over St. Bernard/Norwich Tech/Wheeler on Monday. Somers (5-2) also beat East Catholic.
