Headlock for Hunger NEWA Duals Sunday at Bridgewater State

NEWA Wrestler of Week: Senior Shane Parcel (Pine Brook, NJ), Roger Williams University, 197 pounds
Shane went 3-0 as the Hawks had a great weekend getting three conference dual meet victories.  Parcel beat conference place winner Petros Hologitas of Trinity, 6-5. He then pinned Peter DiMaggio of WPI and finished his day off by pinning returning conference place winner Josh Roometua of Wesleyan.

NEWA Rookie Wrestler of Week: Freshman Ty Herzog (Slatington, PA), Roger Williams University, 157 pounds
Ty continues his great season, having another great week after winning the Brockport Invitational the week before.  Herzog beat John Williams of Trinity, 13-2.  He followed that up with a pin over Eli Wolfgang of WPI and another major decision win this time vs Ed Pierce of Wesleyan, 13-5.

Bridgewater State University is hosting the Headlock for Hunger NEWA Duals on Sunday January 26. The NEWA has done an outstanding job raising money and collecting food to help local communities at the event. If attending please bring can goods or a donation to support a great cause while seeing the best in the region compete.

AROUND THE MAT: There were some great dual meets over the past weekend.  Johnson & Wales, Norwich University, Western New England University and Coast Guard met for a quad meet in Providence.  Johnson & Wales went 3-0. They had three dominating dual meet wins and won 25 of the 30 individual varsity matches on the day.  Joey Gaccione at 149, Colby Clarke at 157, and Colin Lenhardt all went 3-0.  Lenhardt got two more pins to increase his lead as the program’s career falls leader.  Mike Ferinde won all of his matches on the day including a 13-5 major decision win over Sean McCalister of WNEU.  Coast Guard went 2-1 with wins over Norwich and WNEU.  They edged Norwich 24-22 in a highly contested dual.  Coast Guard won 6 of the 10 matches in the dual and had a big pin from Matt Viera at 149 and Earl Roberts at 125.  Norwich beat WNEU in the last dual.  Dave Pinto went 3-0 for the Cadets at 165 and Jamison Sacco of WNEU went 3-0 for the Golden Bears at 285.

Trinity College hosted another big quad meet on the day with Wesleyan University, Roger Williams, and WPI.  Roger Williams continued their strong season and went 3-0 on the day.  The Hawks were led by Danny Downes at 149, Ty Herzog at 157, and Shane Parcel at 197.  All three wrestlers went 3-0 and helped the Hawks to three dominating dual meet wins.  Downes had three great wins and 1 by fall.  Herzog had 2 major decisions and a pin earning him rookie of the week honors and his teammate Parcel won wrestler of the week honors for having 2 pins and a win by decision.  He beat two conference place winners on the day.  The Hawks used a few different lineups on the day showing great depth.  174 was a great weight class in Hartford on Saturday.  Dan Ressler beat Kyle Lundberg of Trinity 3-2 but lost to Ryan Sblendorio of Wesleyan by the same score.  WPI went 2-1.  They had big wins over Wesleyan and Trinity after falling to RWU.  Brian Amato at 125 and Tyler Tilbe at 141 both went 3-0 to lead the Engineers.  Amato had a big win over James Hamilton of Wesleyan and another over Anthony D’Anton of RWU, a conference placer a year ago.  At 174 Justin Marsh had a great 7-4 win over Sblendorio of Wesleyan but lost by decision 4-2 to Lundberg of Trinity.  Mike Perruccio was also 2-0 on the day at 149.  In the last dual Wesleyan beat Trinity.  Wesleyan’s Ryan Sblendorio had the best day at 174 in a loaded weight class.  Sblendorio lost to Marsh of WPI by decision but beat Ressler of RWU and Lundberg of Trinity both by decision.  James Hamilton added a big win over last years region placer Anthony D’Anton of RWU at 125.  Freshman Ed Pierce went 2-1 for the Cardinals at 157.  For the Bantams, Kyle McGuire continued his impressive season going 3-0.  Hologitas was 2-1 at 197.

Williams College, Rhode Island College, and Bridgewater State University all competed down at the Mount St. Vincent Open.  RIC placed 7 wrestlers in the top 4 including 3 champions.  The Murray brothers won the tournament at 125 and 133, and at 174 Justin Caparco beat his teammate Joe Mahoney to take the championship.  Bridgewater State University placed 5 wrestlers in the top 4.  The Bears were led by Ricky Caruso who won the tournament at 285.  BSU had two other finalist in Paul Sughrue at 133 and Shawn Kavanagh at 184 who both finished 2nd.  Brett Reed at 125 and Matt Armano at 157 both finished 4th.  Williams College was without a few starters over the weekend but still placed 4 wrestlers in the top 4.  Seidita at 125 and Strenk at 174 both took 3rd while Gaffney at 165 and Wertz at 285 both finished 4th for the Ephs.  Lastly in a Dual Meet last night Springfield College beat Norwich University 30-7.  With the NEWA Duals coming up this weekend we didn’t want to leave it out.  It was a very competitive dual and a big match at 165 took place between Dave Pinto of Norwich and Dylan Foley of Springfield.  Foley got the edge and won 3-1 in the match of the No. 2 and No. 3 teams in New England.
