Warde's Kane
is named state wrestler of the year
SOUTHINGTON, March 22 – Fairfield Warde’s Charles Kane didn’t lose a match this season. He went 48-0, won the Class L championship at 138 pounds, captured his first State Open title and brought home a New England championship.
On Sunday, he was named Wrestler of the Year in balloting by coaches at the Connecticut High School Coaches Association (CHSCA) All-State banquet at the Aqua Turf restaurant.
“Charlie had an excellent year. He stayed consistent throughout the entire season,” Fairfield Warde coach Jason Shaughnessy told the Fairfield Citizen. “We had a tough schedule and he wrestled a lot of tough matches and tough kids. And he continued to give winning performances week in and week out.”
For the second straight year, Newtown was recognized as the state’s team of the year.
Wrestlers that won State Open, Class LL, Class L, Class M and Class S championships were recognized with All-State honors along with seven senior wrestlers earning Academic All-State honors. State Coach of the Year and Assistant Coach of the Year honors were also presented.
Newtown won its second straight Class LL championship this winter but they also prevailed at the State Open. A week after the Nighthawks beat Danbury by more than 51 points to win the Class LL championship, Newtown turned in a dominating performance to capture its first-ever State Open championship.
The Nighthawks scored 159 points – the second-highest performance in tournament history and two shy of Danbury’s record 161 set in 2005 – with two individual champions and seven wrestlers earning medals by finishing among the top six in their weight classes. “We’ve had a fine year,” Newtown coach Chris Bray said. “It’s one of those seasons when everything came together just right.”
The Academic All-State award recognizes seniors in good standing at their schools and members of the All-State team in wrestling. Candidates also need to score at least 1,800 on the SAT and/or at least 26 on the ACT.
