NCAA Division III roundup
Two former Newington wrestlers still ranked No. 1 in New England
New England Wrestling Association
Chris Perrault, a junior from Plymouth State, is the New England Wrestling Association’s wrestler of the week. He improved to 9-2 on the season and a key win over Jon Deupree of Southern Maine.

In the weekly New England Division III coaches poll, Johnson & Wales continues to be the top ranked team in New England but Roger Williams is moved within a point of the top spot. NEWA also released their individual weight class rankings, which can be found on this page.

Former Newington High wrestlers Brian Amato (125, WPI) and Chris Chorzepa (188, Williams) are ranked No. 1 in their respective weight classes. Coast Guard's Nate Giorgio (133) is also ranked No. 1.

Around the region: Rhode Island College, Southern Maine and Plymouth State had a tri-meet in Maine over the weekend. RIC went 2-0 and USM was 1-1.

Rhode Island College was again led by Ricondo Cole (141) and Terrance Jean-Jacques (285). Cole went 2-0 with 2 pins. Jean-Jacques had a first period pin against USM and won by tech fall over Zack Stewart from PSU, 25-10. John Georges also had a big win over Sean Fagan of USM at 197. Georges won in double overtime by riding time advantage…USM went 1-1, losing to RIC but beating PSU. The Huskies were led by Michael Arangio, Carl Luth, Dan DeCarlo, and Daniel Del Gallo all who went 2-0. Del Gallo picked up a first period pin over Alex Gerhold of PSU and then beat returning national qualifier from two years ago, Shawn Giblin of RIC 5-1. Carl Luth had a big 9-3 win over Joe Slane of RIC and Arangio had two first period pins at 125. USM and RIC both won five matches but bonus points were the difference for RIC in the dual meet…PSU was led by Chris Perreault this week’s wrestler of the week. They also got nice wins from Moises Diaz at 174 and Nick Pacheco of 184 over RIC.

Johnson and Wales, WPI and Roger Williams all competed in duals tournament down at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy over the weekend.

Roger Williams went 2-1 beating USMMA, 35-9 and LIU-Post, 33-9, but Roger Williams dropped the dual to Baldwin Wallace currently ranked No. 23 in the country, 24-15. Several Hawks went 3-0 on the afternoon including Danny Downes at 149, David Welch at 197, and Kyle Foster at 285. Welch and Foster both had two pins. Welch also beat Andrew Shackelford of BW, 15-7 and Foster won by tech fall over Andrew Sierawski of BW, 17-1. Downes had more a workingman’s day winning all three matches by decision. He had a good 7-4 win over Nathan Twito of Merchant Marine, 7-4. Joe Albina of RWU beat Gabriel Mahaney of BW 4-1 in his only match of the day. Albina has had a great season so he must have been a little banged up since he was only on the mat once for the Hawks

WPI went 1-2, beating LIU 20-19 before dropping duals to Hunter and JWU. WPI was 3-0 at 125 with Stephen Jendritz and Brian Amato. In every dual they had to bump up one of them to 133 and they went 0-3 at that weight on the weekend giving up weight. Jendritz had a big 7-0 win over Cody Beadette of JWU to start that dual and Amato, the top wrestler in New England at 125, beat Kenny Albert of Hunter, 8-3. At 165, Andrew Tanner went 2-1 and had a good win over Sean Prell of JWU, 7-2. Justin Marsh and Lucas Muntz at 174 and 184 both went 2-1. Muntz had a first period pin over Hunter and Marsh had two pins on the day.

Johnson & Wales University went 3-1 on the day with convincing wins over Merchant Marine Academy, LIU, and WPI, but came up short at what looks to be a very good Baldwin Wallace team. Michael Ferinde at 141, Joey Gaccione at 149, and Phil Kelly at 285 all went 4-0. Kelly had four first period pins. With a pin Wednesday against BSU, Kelly was 5-0 on the week with 5 pins. Joey Gaccione had 3 pins on the weekend as did Michael Labell at 174 who went 3-1 with 3 first period pins. Against Baldwin Wallace, Bobby Jordan at 125 lost a tough 10-9 decision to Jesse Gunter ranked in the country. JWU then lost tight decision at 157-197 after pins by Ferinde and Gaccione. JWU also beat Bridgewater State University 50-0 on Wednesday and is now 4-1 in duals this season.
