Xavier beats No. 2 Danbury in thriller
With four pins, undefeated No. 3 Xavier built a 15-point lead after 10 matches and held on to beat No. 2 Danbury, 33-30. Ryan Vino (138), Tyler Kenny (160), Joe Cambereri (195) and Chidiebere Broderick (285) had pins for Xavier. Pat Moynihan (113) picked up a key decision to lift Xavier. The Falcons (16-1) also beat Nashoba Valley Tech, 42-22 before dropping their first match of the season to host Timberlane Regional. Danbury beat Timberlane, 43-24 and Nashoba Valley, 44-29. … Fairfield Ludlowe captured the Legends Duals in Fairfield by beating Conard, 43-42 on criteria for its fifth win of the afternoon. Ludlowe prevailed on most near fall points, 14-2. Both teams had seven pins in the bout. … The No. 2 ranked team in New York State, Monroe High from Woodbury, N.Y., won the Ridgefield Challenge for the third straight year with a tournament record 277 ½ points and five individual champions. No. 1 Newtown was a distant second with 185½ points and three individual champions. Hand was fourth while Greenwich, with five medalists, took fifth. … Natick, ranked No. 6 in Massachusetts, beat No. 9 Ledyard, 40-25 in pool play and topped New Fairfield in the championship bout, 37-36 to win the eighth New Fairfield Duals. Ledyard outlasted No. 10 Bristol Eastern, 36-27 to finish third. … West Springfield, Mass. (20-8) won the final match in overtime to beat Foran-Milford, 38-34 and capture the fourth Richard Hastings Duals at Newington. Foran, who was 3-1 in the tournament, is now 20-4. … With three individual champions and seven finalists, No. 7 Windham outlasted No. 8 Simsbury, 216½ to 204½ to win the eighth Doc Myers Brawl in Stafford. Windham won the tournament for the fourth time and the third time in the last four years.

Derby is tops in NVL
Even though the Naugatuck Valley League doesn’t recognize wrestling as an official league sport, count Derby as its first unofficial team champion. The Red Raiders beat Oxford, 68-6 to run the table in the NVL. Derby is 13-3 and 4-0 in the NVL. League by-laws require six teams for official league competition. … No. 4 Fairfield Warde (16-1) tied a school record with 10 pins in a 77-6 victory over Wilton. The Mustangs had 10 pins in a win over Staples in 2009. … Avon (18-2, 7-0 NCCC) extended its NCCC win streak to 58 with a 60-21 win over Canton in the final league dual meet between the two long-time foes. Avon and Canton have been wrestling against each other since 1977. Avon is leaving the NCCC and will be in the Central Connecticut Conference next year. The Falcons took advantage of six forfeits in the win. … South Windsor (7-1, 4-0 CCC North) remained undefeated in the CCC North with a 63-18 victory over East Hartford (4-7, 3-2). … Tied at 30-30, New Canaan won the final three matches to beat Warren Harding, 48-30.

Danbury rallies to beat No. 1 Newtown in thriller
For the fourth consecutive week, the No. 1 team in the state wrestling poll lost a dual meet after ascending to the top of the poll. On Wednesday, No. 2 Danbury rallied from a 12-point deficit by winning seven of eight matches to beat top-ranked Newtown, 30-25. Newtown (9-2) took a 15-3 after four bouts with pins from Anthony Falbo (170) and Logan Walsh (182) and a decision. But the Hatters (10-1) won seven of the next eight to take a commanding 30-18 lead. Danbury got big wins from Justin Peterson (132) with a 3-1 win over Matt Gonzalez and Alex Marquis (138) who beat James Leuci, 5-4 with an escape in the final 30 seconds. … Brunswick School-Greenwich (13-1) had eight straight wins to erase a seven-point deficit to beat Iona Prep, 55-23. … Berlin earned its 14th win with a 43-26 victory over Maloney. The Redcoats (14-3, 3-1 CCC South) have a big bout with Bristol Eastern (7-2, 3-0) on Friday. … Farmington (11-2, 5-0 CCC West) remained on track to a season-ending bout with Simsbury that could decide the CCC West title. Trailing 18-0, Farmington won eight of the final 10 bouts with five pins to beat Southington, 39-30. … Simsbury (9-1, 4-0 CCC West) had five pins and rolled to a 57-3 decision over New Britain. … Plainville had three pins as they beat Bristol Central for the first time since 2011 with a 34-31 victory. … Jonathan Law (11-11, 3-0) remained undefeated in the SCC B Division with a 39-36 victory over East Haven. … New Haven had four pins including a pin by Jehiel Bryant (170) that helped in a close 36-34 victory over Cheshire.

Giorgio helps Coast Guard take third at NEWA Duals
Coast Guard’s senior All-American Nate Giorgio (133) and junior Mike Shermot (174) each won four matches Sunday as Coast Guard finished third at the NEWA Duals in Springfield. Giorgio recorded his 10th tech fall of the season and he leads Division III in tech falls. … Roger Williams rallied from a 15-point deficit to beat Johnson & Wales and win the NEWA Duals for the second straight year. … Shelton’s Patrick Gillen (285) is starting for No. 12 Virginia and has won 13 matches so far this season. … Mark Foresi became the sixth Trinity College wrestler to be inducted into the NEWA Hall of Fame. Newtown climbs to No. 1 spot for second time
For the second time this season, Newtown is the No. 1 ranked team in the state. The Nighthawks had an outstanding week. They ended New Milford’s long 88-match Southwest Conference winning streak with a dominant victory on Wednesday. And on Sunday, Newtown finished a close second to Minisink Valley, the No. 1 ranked team in New York State, at the Gene Brigham Invitational. Danbury, which lost to Mt. Anthony last week, slipped to No. 2 while Xavier moved up to No. 3. Newtown, Danbury and Fairfield Warde have all shared time in the No. 1 spot this season.
