Perry qualifies to compete at 2016
U.S. Olympic trials
LAS VEGAS, Dec. 19 -- Middletown High graduate Richard Perry has qualified for the 2016 U.S. Olympic trials in wrestling. Perry finished fifth at the U.S. national championships in Las Vegas on Saturday night in the freestyle competition at 86 kilograms or 189 pounds. The top seven wrestlers at the meet qualify for the U.S. trials on April 9-10 in Iowa City.

The winner in each weight class at the Olympic trials will qualify for the U.S. Olympic team and a trip to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, Brazil in August.

Perry, who wrestled four years at Bloomsburg State in Pennsylvania from 2011-14, went 4-2 at the U.S. nationals to take fifth. He beat Clayton Foster, of Laramie, Wyoming, 5-0 to take fifth. Perry won his first matches of the tournament with 4-2 victories over Timmy McCall and Victor Terrell and a 4-3 win in the quarterfinal over Foster.

In the semifinal, Perry lost to three-time NCAA champion David Taylor of State College, Pa., by technical fall, 11-0. Perry fell to Keith Gavin of Charlotteville, Va., 11-0 in the consolation round before beating Foster a second time to finish fifth. Gavin represented the United Sates at the 2013 world championships. Taylor lost in the final to four-time NCAA champion Kyle Dake (Cornell), 11-4. A year ago, Perry took seventh in the U.S. national meet at 86 kg.

Ward Melville beats four top 10 teams at Guilford Invitational
For the eighth time in the last 10 years, Ward Melville High from East Setauket, N.Y. won the Guilford Invitational beating No. 1 Newtown, No. 4 Fairfield Warde, No. 5 Ledyard and No. 6 Xavier in the tournament. Ward Melville had four individual champions to outlast Fairfield Warde, 232½-183½. Noah Zuckerman (106), Alex Steele (126), Tim Kane (132), Jack Price (138) and Charles Kane (145) won for the Mustangs. Newtown finished third, four points ahead of Ledyard. … Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech won its first tournament championship as a co-op team with a hard-fought 10-point win over Ellis Tech-Danielson, 166-156, at the Lancer Invitational in Waterford. Each team had two individual champions but Lyman had three wrestlers finish third while Ellis had one second place finish, one third place finish and two wrestlers take fourth. It’s the best finish for Lyman/WT since taking second a year ago in the Bobcat Classic at Bacon Academy. It’s the best finish for Ellis Tech since taking second in the Connecticut Vo-Tech tournament in 2004. Killingly’s Austin Caffrey (182) was named outstanding wrestler. … Mt. Anthony of Bennington, Vt., had 15 pins and five individual champions to win Berlin’s C.J. McCormack Invitational for the sixth straight year with a 253-158 win over Bristol Eastern. No. 11 Foran finished third, two points behind Eastern, for their best-ever finish in the 28th annual tournament. … Fairfield Ludlowe had seven finalists and five champions to win the 10th annual Ludlowe Invitational for the third time with a 228-177 win over Fairfield Prep. Harding’s Humberto Rodriguez (220) had four pins and won the fast fall award. Ludlowe’s Chase Lind had three pins and was named the outstanding wrestler of the tournament. … Shelton scored a tournament record 286 points, had seven finalists and six individual champions to win the 6th annual Shelton Invitational for the first time, beating Masuk, 286-184½. Shelton’s Kyle McGinnis (145) earned his 100th career win and took home outstanding wrestler honors. … Bristol Central beat East Haven, 218-181 to win the 15th annual Plainville Invitational for a record sixth time. Four Ram wrestlers won titles. East Haven nipped Avon by one point for second place with Tim Seksinski beating Avon’s Marvin Escobar, 6-3 in the final at 195 pounds. It’s East Haven’s best tournament showing since taking second at the Rodney Smith Tournament in 2003. … With five finalists and three individual champions, East Catholic won the 37th annual Derby Invitational for the first time with a 158-143 victory over Morgan. Jacon Marselli (106), Oliver Topitzer (160) and Jack Desautels (285) each won for the Eagles with pins. It is the best tournament finish for East Catholic since taking third in the Skip Arden Invitational in 2000. … No. 3 New Milford had seven individual champions to beat Middletown, 234-161 and win the 13th annual Indian Classic in Farmington. … No. 9 New Fairfield had six finalists and three individual champions as they finished a close second to Winnacunnet High of Hampton, N.H., at the Londonderry Holiday Classic. … St. Bernard/Norwich Tech finished fourth at the Eagle Holiday Classic in Turners Falls, Mass., with Matthew Dowler (138) earning outstanding wrestler honors. Casey Bellamy (113) also won for St. Bernard/NT.  … With four individual champions and a big win from Jason Hume over Seymour’s Chris Ernst in the final at 285 pounds, Terryville won the 37th annual Mike O’Keefe Holiday Classic in Southbury with a 4½-point win over host Pomperaug, 139-134½. It was the closest tournament since Nonnewaug beat Pomperaug by three in 2005. It was Terryville’s first win at the tournament since 1992. Five Panthers won titles for Pomperaug. … Montville’s Hunter Driscoll (120), Zach Looney (126), Joel Morth (132), Sam Kury (138) and Austin Concascia (145) each had three pins as the Indians swept Conard, Montville and Coventry. … No. 2 Danbury had five wrestlers win titles at the Clarkstown, N.Y. tournament with Justin Peterson (145) earning outstanding wrestler honors. No team scores were kept.

Thursday, Dec. 17
Avon finishes strong to beat Simsbury
After No. 10 Simsbury took a three-point lead with three straight pins, Avon won the final four bouts of the match to beat the Trojans for the first time since 2010, 45-30. It was Avon’s debut in the CCC. … With three pins and 10 forfeits, Southington opened its season with a 78-3 win over Fermi, wrestling its final season. Fermi will merge with Enfield next year. … Farmington got pins from Zach Marin and Ryan Dopp as the Indians opened the season with a 54-16 win over E.O. Smith. … Scott Legacy, who helped built Mt. Anthony Union in Bennington, Vt., into a New England power, will resign at the end of the season to become the first head coach of a new wrestling program at Castleton State in Vermont. MAU has won a national record 27 straight Vermont state titles. But they have also won eight New England championships, including the last three. The Patriots also have a spirited rivalry with Danbury meeting on Martin Luther King Day in January. Legacy has been coaching at MAU since 1985 and has more than 650 wins.

No. 1 Newtown wins opener on new mat
Defending State Open champion Newtown opened the season on a brand new mat courtesy of donations from the community. The top-ranked Nighthawks beat Pomperaug, 46-16. … No. 2 Danbury rolled over Darien, 69-6. … No. 5 Ledyard had eight pins in a 51-27 victory over NFA. … Pins from Alex Steele, Timmy Kane, Charlie Kane and Kris Gjinaj helped No. 4 Fairfield Warde get the season off to a nice start with a 39-30 victory over John Jay-Cross River. John Jay won the New York Section 1 dual meet championship on Saturday. … No. 8 Trumbull took advantage of 7 forfeits and had 4 pins to roll pas New Canaan, 71-9. … Derby won five of the eight matches contested on the mat to outlast St. Paul, 39-30. The Raiders won the final four bouts of the evening with two decisions, a pin and forfeit to erase a nine-point deficit. … No. 12 Middletown dominated Glastonbury, 66-18 with nine pins including seven in a row at one point that turned a 12-point deficit into a big lead for the Dragons. … Pins from Ethan Ross, Sebastian Cano and Erik Menchaca helped Greenwich beat Brewster, N.Y., 39-38. … Rocky Hill picked up a nice 57-21 victory over Newington. … Berlin had six forfeits in a 46-18 loss to Manchester. …

Suffield/East Windsor/East Granby took advantage of six Somers forfeits and earned a 42-33 opening day win on Tuesday night. Four Somers wrestlers won by pin.

Defending State Open and Class LL champion Newtown is the No. 1 wrestling team in the Norwich Bulletin’s weekly state coaches poll. The Nighthawks receiver 13 first place votes and finished ahead of No. 2 Danbury. New Milford, Fairfield Warde and Ledyard round out the top five. The high school wrestling season opens Wednesday with action around the state.
