LAS VEGAS, Dec. 19 -- Middletown High graduate Richard Perry has qualified for the 2016 U.S. Olympic trials in wrestling. Perry finished fifth at the U.S. national championships in Las Vegas on Saturday night in the freestyle competition at 86 kilograms or 189 pounds. The top seven wrestlers at the meet qualify for the U.S. trials on April 9-10 in Iowa City.

The winner in each weight class at the Olympic trials will qualify for the U.S. Olympic team and a trip to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, Brazil in August.

Perry, who wrestled four years at Bloomsburg State in Pennsylvania from 2011-14, went 4-2 at the U.S. nationals to take fifth. He beat Clayton Foster, of Laramie, Wyoming, 5-0 to take fifth. Perry won his first matches of the tournament with 4-2 victories over Timmy McCall and Victor Terrell and a 4-3 win in the quarterfinal over Foster.

In the semifinal, Perry lost to three-time NCAA champion David Taylor of State College, Pa., by technical fall, 11-0. Perry fell to Keith Gavin of Charlotteville, Va., 11-0 in the consolation round before beating Foster a second time to finish fifth. Gavin represented the United Sates at the 2013 world championships. Taylor lost in the final to four-time NCAA champion Kyle Dake (Cornell), 11-4.
