2001 news in review Sepko named coach of the year Ledyard's Allyn Quibble didn't lose a match in Connecticut this winter and that trend continued at the 7th annual Connecticut High School Coaches Association's wrestling recognition dinner. Quibble, who won his second straight State Open and Class L title this year at 140 pounds, was named the Wrestler of the Year.
Quibble finished 43-1 with 19 pins, 10 tech falls and nine major decisions. He allowed only one takedown in his first 39 matches. Quibble finished his career with a 162-17 record that included three Eastern Connecticut Conference titles, three Class L titles and consecutive Open crowns. He finished third in the New England championships this winter after dropping a 3-2 decision in the semifinals to eventual New England champion Ben Lackey of Mt. Anthony, Vt.
Sepko and Dion have led Southington to five straight 23-plus win seasons, two straight CCC South titles and a 143-20-1 record in the past five years. The Knights (24-1) finished second in the state coaches poll behind Danbury.
Murphy honored for 1999-00 season Ledyard High School wrestling coach Rob Murphy will be honored as the 1999-00 state coach of the year in the annual Connecticut High School Coaches Association (CHSCA) banquet. Murphy, who retired after the 1999-00 season, led the Colonels to back-to-back Class L titles in 1998 and 1999, seven Eastern Connecticut Conference titles and more than 200 career victories.
Ziegler up for national honors Former Montville athletic director and wrestling coach Art Ziegler was a finalist for National Coach of the Year award. Ziegler teaches physical education in Montville. Ziegler, 53, was the Indians' wrestling coach from 1973-2000, leading them to Class M championships in 1978 and 1979 along with a Class S championship in 1988. He posted a career record of 268-196-3.
"What I like most about Art is that he's a straightforward guy and a true competitor," Ledyard coach Rob Murphy told the New London Day in February 2000.
"He doesn't overemphasize wrestling. His career has had peaks and valleys and he's kind of rolled with it in an admirable way. I've kind of learned from him, taking some of the lessons and stories and experiences he's had that he's shared with me." Ziegler was a wrestler at Springfield College, where he finished third in Division III as a senior and fifth as a junior. Danbury's Steve Scott (145) became the first Danbury wrestler since 1991 to claim a New England championship with a 5-4 victory. He was the only state wrestler to win a New England title. Platt's Matt Cattel fell in the finals at 140 pounds, losing to Mt. Anthony's Ben Lackey, 4-3. Timberlane, N.H. won its second straight New England title with a dominating 74-60 win over Mt. For the past four seasons, the Danbury High wrestling team has finished the season as the No. 1 ranked team in the state in the state coaches poll. This year, the Hatters earned their No. 1 spot on the mat. Danbury had seven medalwinners including two champions Scott Fay (189) and Steve Scott (145) to win the CIAC State Open championship at Glastonbury High with a 127-96 win over neighboring Bethel.
Danbury, Berlin, Bethel, Derby win state championships Danbury won its fifth straight Class LL championship with a 25.5 point win over Southington; Berlin won its third straight state title with a record-breaking win over Simsbury in Class L, Bethel won its first state title in Class M while Derby captured its second straight Class S title. With four individual champions, Nonnewaug earned its fifth straight BL Tournament championship with a 198½ to 179½ win over Gilbert. Wolcott Tech's Justin Tucker (135) earned outstanding wrestler honors. Thomaston freshman Alex Rice (152) rallied to win his school's BL title in the final five seconds of regulation.
