Eight state wrestlers earn All-American honors
FARGO, N.D., July 26 -- Eight Connecticut wrestlers earned All-American honors at USA Wrestling's Cadet/Junior national championship tournament. Five boys and three girls finished in the top eight of their respective classes.

In the Greco-Roman cadet tournament, Simsbury's Joseph Martin (105) was 8th, Loomis-Chaffee's Michael Power (130) was fifth and Danbury's Jeff Marra (145) was 6th. In the Greco-Roman junior tournament, Killingly's Tom Phillips (103) was 8th while Danbury's Anthony Hayes (145) was 7th.

In the second annual women's open freestyle tournament, Waterford's Stephanie Shaw (138) was 3rd, Elana Pirozhov (138) was fourth and Danbury's Susan Levitt (110) was seventh. Shaw earned All-American honors for the second straight year.

To be eligible for Junior competition for both men and women, a wrestler must be born Sept. 1, 1983 or later and be enrolled in grades 9-12 during the 2003 Spring semester. Nutmeg Games results
WATERFORD, July 20 -- Former Canton High wrestlers Kacy O'Connor (157) and Josh Kaplan (165) each won individual gold medals in the 2003 Nutmeg State Games wrestling tournament at Waterford High. Click on the link for results.

Former Bristol Central wrestling coach Dennis Siegmann has been selected for enshrinement in the Connecticut High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame. "It's not about me, it's the kids. They're the ones that have earned this award for me," Siegmann told the
Bristol Press
. "For me it's a humbling award, to be considered among all the other people that are now in the Hall of Fame." Siegmann (348-109-12) led BC to two Class L titles (85, 98) and 11 league championships.

In June, a federal court dismissed a suit contending the Education Department discriminated against male athletes in enforcing equal opportunities for women. The court ruled the National Wrestling Coaches Association and other athletic groups fell far short in showing they were entitled to bring the suit over Title IX. The decision was based on procedural issues.
LAKE ORION, Mich., March 30 -- Waterford's Stefanie Shaw outlasted Minnesota's Chelynne Pringle, 10-5, to win the U.S. Girls Wrestling Association national championship at 138 pounds. Shaw went 4-0 in the tournament with a pair of pins to win the championship. Two other Connecticut girls earned All-American honors. Danbury's Susan Levitt (105) finished sixth while Norwich's Jade Perry (130) was fifth at 130 pounds. Newington's Kelli Parady finished 10th at 138.

CLEVELAND, Ohio, March 30 -- Greenwich's John Sullivan (275) became the first Connecticut wrestler since 1998 to earn All-American honors to finished seventh at 275 at the National High School Coaches Association senior national championship tournament. Connecticut had a fine showing, finished tied for 24th place with 45 points with Utah, only 3 points behind the top New England school in the tournament, Massachusetts. East Windsor's Jason Vermes (112) and New Canaan's Bruno Dorismond (275) each finished one win shy of All-American status. Click on this link for results of all Connecticut wrestlers.


League principals and athletic directors approved a plan in March to add a fourth division to the Central Connecticut Conference in the 2004-05 season to help make the league more competitive. Principals voted 19-2 to move the two largest schools from the three existing divisions into the new CCC North. New Britain, Southington (CCC South), East Hartford, Manchester (CCC East) and Simsbury and Glastonbury (CCC West) will make up the new division. The other divisions will remain intact.

KANSAS CITY, Mo., March 16 -- Four Connecticut natives wrestling in the NCAA Division I championships each won one match in the tournament this weekend. Sacred Heart's Anthony Reynolds (197 pounds, Berlin) and Jason Cucolo (133, Darien) each won a match in the championship bracket. Brown's Nick Ciarcia (184, Berlin) and Sacred Heart's Rob Belville (154, New Milford) each won a consolation round bout. Sacred Heart finished 42nd in the field with six points while Ciarcia was the only wrestler to earn a point for Brown, which finished 66th.

All-State Banquet 2003
SOUTHINGTON, March 16 -- Danbury's Anthony Hayes, the two-time State Open champion, was named the state wrestler of the year at the Connecticut High School Coaches Association's 9th annual All-State wrestling banquet. Killingly's Rich Bowen was named the state coach of the year.

East Haven's John Taylor was named the assistant coach of the year. Ron LaBeef, a volunteer assistant coach at Killingly, and his wife, Olinda, were honored as contributor of the year. Paul Angilly of the Bristol Press was named sportswriter of the year. Head coaches and assistant coaches from the respective classes were also honored with Academic All-State and All-State wrestlers from Class LL, L, M and S.

New England Tournament '03
RHAM's Davis captures New England title in 2 OT
LOWELL, Mass., March 8 -- Kevin Davis of RHAM held down Jonathan Brown of Mt. Mansfield, Vt. in the second OT period to win a New England championship at 160 pounds by criteria.

Three other Connecticut wrestlers lost in the finals. In the 119-pound final, Zach Thone, Spaulding, N.H. outlasted Killingly's James Therrien, Killingly, 6-4. At 140, Nick Dalicandro, Salem N.H. handed Danbury's Anthony Hayes his first loss of the year with a 4-1 decision. Fairfield's Maz Pazdan (189) lost in the finals to Ludlow's John Dacruz, 9-0.

BELMONT, Mass., March 1 -- Loomis Chaffee easily won its second straight New England Prep School championship with a 52-point victory over Trinity-Pawling, 178-126. Freshman Mike Powers, who placed third in the nation, won at 119 and earned the tournament's outstanding wrestler award. Jon Moyet (145) was the only other New England champion for the Pelicans. Derron Richardson, who was seventh at the nationals, was second at 135. Click here for complete tournament results.

UNCASVILLE, Conn., March 9 -- Five Connecticut men were inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for lifetime of service to the sport. Southington official Brian Manzi, Stonington official John Vino, former Berlin official Art Powers, former NFA coach Carl Snitkin and former Windham High coach Brian Crudden were inducted. Connecticut Gov. John Rowland was also inducted into the Hall, receiving the Outstanding American Award.

Top-ranked Danbury won its third straight State Open championship by beating RHAM. Anthony Hayes (140) got the only individual win for the Hatters. New Canaan's Alex Ohrn (160) took home the tournament's outstanding wrestler trophy.

For the seventh straight year, Danbury has been voted the No. 1 team in the state in the final state coaches poll.

Danbury, Berlin, Killingly, Montville win state titles
Danbury won a state record 7th straight Class LL championship while Berlin won for the second time in the last three years in Class L and for the third time in the last four years. In Class M, Killingly outlasted Windham and RHAM while in Class S, Montville won its first title since 1988.
