Cranston East finishes strong to defend BC Invitational title
By GERRY deSIMAS, JR.

BRISTOL, Jan. 5, 2002 ---  As the final match of the 20th Bristol Central Invitational concluded, Plainville High wrestling coach Sean Kelly sat with his legs crossed on the hardwood floor. Wearing a smile on his face, he predicted a sleepless night for himself.

His Blue Devils came so close to snatching the tournament championship but fell one win short. "I'll be replaying this tournament all night long," he said with a proud grin.

Rhode Island's Cranston East won five individual titles and captured a pair of third place finishes to slip past host Bristol Central, 212 to 206½ and defend its tournament championship. Plainville was third with 204½ points  the most ever by a third place team in the tournament.

But the title wasn't secured until Cranston East won the final two matches of the night  a pair of 1-0 decisions in the 140 pound and 145 pound finals. The Bolts went 7-0 in the final two rounds (championship and consolation).

Plainville went 5-5 in the final two rounds and almost came away with the title. Bristol Central, which had wrestled so strong throughout the day, went 0-9 in the final two rounds despite some gutsy performances from their wrestlers.

Cranston East was also missing three starters who had Saturday detention, Bolts coach Chris Tribelli said. One of the replacement wrestlers earned a medal by finishing sixth at 152 while heavyweight Dan D'Arrezo, normally a 189-pound wrestler, took a surprising third.

"Cranston has a real good team and they showed it in the finals," Bristol Central coach Pat Parente said. "I'm proud of my kids. They held their own. They wrestled (well). They just meet some good kids."

Plainville was a contender despite the loss of Andy Caron (171), a fourth seed who was injured in a 9-3 quarterfinal defeat and didn't wrestle the rest of the day.

"We wanted 10 kids to place (in the top six) and we got nine," Kelly said. "If we could place 10, I figured we would have a shot at winning. The kids wrestled great."

Bristol Central had seven wrestlers in the finals and led Plainville by 13 points and Cranston East by 16 points. The tournament runs two finals bouts at once with matches at the extreme ends of the lineup and working in.

Cranston East cut the Central lead to 10 when top-seeded Matt Cuccio pinned Central's Bruce Guilmette in 4:32 in the 215 pound final. At the same time, Plainville's Jesse Cavallaro beat Central's A.J. Boi by technical fall, 29-11 in the 112-pound final to move within eight points of Central.

At 119 pounds, Cranston's Alex Rey made a first period takedown stand up in a 2-0 win over Central's Nick Therriault, whose last-second attempts to tilt Rey in the third period were thwarted as the Bolts moved within six points, 206½-200 with Plainville right behind at 198½.

In the 171 pound final, Waterford's Kyle Hightower outlasted Central's Bill Chiarillo, 12-7. All four of Waterford's finalists went home as champions.

The best match of the finals came at 125 when Cranston East's Jerry Rico reversed Plainville's Vito Barbagallo with 10 seconds left in regulation to steal a 6-5 victory. Barbagallo had fought off his back in the third period and earned a reversal to take a 5-4 lead. But late in the match, he made a mistake and turned the wrong way, allowing Rico to reverse him.

"Vito lost by being aggressive. You can't complain about that," Kelly said.

The win enabled Cranston to move with 1½ points of Central, which dropped a 6-0 decision at 130 pounds. Tom Godbout, who had a thrilling 4-3 OT win in the semifinals, lost to Jonathan Law's Anthony Fishetti.

Plainville moved into second place with 204½ points, a half point ahead of Cranston East (204) when Jerry Mals pinned Central's Dan Aparo at 135 pounds. Central (206½) couldn't extend its lead when Waterford's Paul Vine earned a tough 4-0 decision over BC senior Joel Fulton at 152 pounds.

Cranston East won the title when Louis Felix (145) and Brandon Scotti (140) earned a pair of 1-0 decisions.

Bristol Eastern had a solid fifth place finish with 10 wrestlers earn medals. But none made the finals. Three Lancer grapplers finished third. Terryville's Vito Flammia finished second at 275 pounds.

"We saved our best matches for the finals," Kelly said. "We've come a lot way. Once we get healthy, we'll see what we're made of."

MAT DUST: Plainville's third place finish was its best in the tournament since a pair of second-place finishes in 1991 and 1992.  ... Waterford's Adam Karasevicz (189) pinned Law's Jose Salgado in the finals in 18 seconds, the third-fastest pin in the history of the tournament in the championship round. Terryville's Paul Higgins had a nine second pin in the 1983 finals.  Karasevicz won the tournament fast fall award with four pins in a total of 2:03 (32 seconds, 15, 58 and 18). He was also named the tournament's most outstanding wrestler. The last wrestler to sweep both awards was Farmington's Mike Lingenfelter in 1982 in the first year of the tournament. .... Cranston East's Alex Rey
and
Louis Felix joined a short list of three-time champions with wins in the finals. Only seven wrestlers have earned that. Rey is a junior. ... Felix didn't give up a point or a takedown in the tournament. ...  It wasn't the closest finish in tournament history. Central beat Eastern by three points in 1983 and 3½ points in 1984. Eastern won the title by 5½ points in 1991.
