Danbury's Hayes finishes fourth in U.S. Open tourney
NEWARK, Del., April 8, 2002  -- Danbury's Anthony Hayes finished fourth in the National Wrestling Coaches Association/Delaware Wrestling Alliance's U.S. Open tournament on April 6. Hayes (130) won five straight matches in the consolation round before falling in the consolation final. Hand-Madison's Brett Scholnick (176) finished fifth, going 2-1 in the consolation round.

The Open was just to be for seniors who had placed in their own state tournament any time in their high school career. It was expanded to all grades when a small number of seniors entered, as the National High School Coaches Association's Senior Nationals also were held the same weekend in Cleveland.

Team New England, featuring four Connecticut wrestlers [Bethel's Jeff Oldham (124), Hayes, RHAM's Greg Dussol (145) and Greenwich's John Sullivan (280)] went 3-0 in its pool of the Scholastic Duals Tournament, defeating Team Delaware, the Indiana Gold and Team New York II. New England won its quarterfinal match with New York, 24-21 but fell in the semifinals to Pennsylvania Thunder, 50-12.

The tournament final between the Thunder and the Pennsylvania Lighting was canceled when the two teams didn't want to face each other.  The teams were declared co-champions.
