Southington wins three: Southington shut out Windsor 80-0, slammed Guilford in the semifinals, 52-18, and topped Simsbury in the championship match, 50-30, to capture the Fermi Duals tournament for the third straight year Saturday.
Southington also beat Simsbury in the 1999 tournament final, 45-23 and in the 1998 final, 36-34.
Jeff Fontaine, Ryan Lee (3 pins), Mike Szymczak, Doug O'Leary, Chris Lee and Colin Sepko (3 pins) each won three times for the Blue Knights (3-0). Matt Vose had two wins on two pins.
RHAM continues ascent: No. 9 RHAM continued its upward ascent in the early 2000-01 campaign by beating two-time Class M champion No. 2 Berlin, 36-30 along with wins over No. 6 Windham, 31-28 and No. 4 Killingly, 36-28. The Sachems, which improve to 4-0, also won the Skip Arden Invitational in Manchester on the opening weekend of the season.
Berlin (3-2), which also lost to Windham, 31-28, lost a dual meet to a Connecticut school for the first time in 30 matches since dropping a match to Ledyard in January 1999 in the championship match of the Berlin Duals.
"We were unable to secure pins this years and we got pinned," Berlin coach Jim Day told the New Britain Herald. "We are young and made some mistakes. We will improve and be in contention for a state title."
Berlin's Mike Laroche went 3-0 during the meet including a 23-8 decision over Chris Doyle from Windham.
RHAM will compete in Class M while Berlin has moved up to Class L.
Newington takes two: The Indians improved to 4-2 with a pair of hard-fought wins against Middletown, 44-33, and Hand-Madison, 57-24. Tim Owens earned his first win of the year in the 215-pound class as he pinned Middletown's Frank Destepano in 25 seconds. The win proved to be the match winner for Newington. Craig Ryan, Tim Faucher, Ryan Trigila and Paul Baumann are all undefeated for Newington.
New Britain takes two: The Hurricanes topped Wright Tech-Stamford and Bunnell but lost to Weston/Barlow/Masuk in a tri-meet. Matt Dowling won all three of his matches in the 135-pound weight class and Markis Sabastein swept the 145-pound class including a 40-second pin in his match against Weston's Jason Rodgerson.
Canton wins three: Canton beat Montville for the first time ever, 42-40 to sweep a dual meet in Montville. The Warriors also beat Farmington, 63-12 in its first match with FHS since 1993 and beat Gilbert, 41-38. Canton has only beaten Gilbert six times since 1972 but has won three straight over the Yellowjackets.
