BARKHAMSTED, Feb. 1, 2003 --  The reaction from some of the senior members of the Nonnewaug High wrestling team should send some shivers down the spines of their fellow Berkshire League brethren.

The Chiefs won the 2003 Berkshire League Tournament for a record seventh straight year Saturday with a tournament record 245.5 points and by a tournament-record margin of 82 points over Thomaston.

Nonnewaug placed nine wrestlers in the finals and four won. Seven other Chief wrestlers finished third. But expectations are a little higher in Woodbury among the Chiefs.

"It was an eye-opener for how much harder we need to work before [the Class S tournament]," said Nonnewaug's Kostas Hatzikostas (125), who lost a thrilling final to Northwestern Regional's Joel Webster in the final seconds, 4-2.

"It was more competitive than we anticipated," added Rob DeJoseph (140). "We're going to have to work harder."

Nonnewaug coach Dave Green was all smiles after the match but also saw room for growth. "I don't want to take anything away from the other teams. I thought they all wrestled great," he said. "I'm not sure if we wrestled to our highest ability. We worked hard and didn't give in but I would like to see us push it up another notch."

Thomaston, only in its second varsity campaign, finished a strong second with three champions, including Al Rice (160), who won his third straight BL title. Terryville was third with 139 points followed by host Northwestern with 127.5 and Gilbert, which only has eight wrestlers. The Yellowjackets had four champions and finished with 100 points.

The best match of the night came at 125 between Hatzikostas and Webster, who won earlier this year by pin. Hatzikostas took a 2-0 lead early in the match on a nice, smooth single leg takedown. Webster escaped about a minute later to trim the lead to one.

Late in the third period, Webster battled to escape with 42 seconds remaining and tie the match at 2-2. Hatzikostas shot for the takedown and put Webster on the match but couldn't get control. Both wrestlers strained as the final seconds ticked away before Webster was able to get control and the match-winning takedown with no time left on the clock.

"He didn't stop moving and that's why he won," Northwestern assistant coach Mike Welcome said. "He never stops moving."

The thrilling win earned Webster (23-0, 18 pins) the tournament's outstanding wrestler award.

At 145, Thomaston's Ricky Markey and Nonnewaug's Rob DeJoseph met for the third time. DeJoseph won a the Pomperaug Tournament by pin while Markey won 8-6 in a dual meet. Tied at 2-2 in the second period, Markey got DeJoseph in a headlock and pinned him for his first tournament championship.

At 275, Nonnewaug's Andy Dohan escaped with three seconds remaining to beat Terryville's Keith Croce, 5-4.

Gilbert had some thrilling wins. Evan Vold (112) pinned Terryville's Corey Lass in 2:00 in the 112 pound final while John Berger (135) erased a 9-4 deficit to earn a 14-9 victory over Terryville's Cole Boudreau. At 171, Steve Romano trailed 5-1 to Nonnewaug's Bill Sfinarolakis but scored five points in the final 30 seconds of the second period in a 7-5 victory.

Northwestern's Matt Brett (103), Terryville's Jim Galvin (119), Thomaston's Jared Stammer (189) and Nonnewaug's Jeremy Pavlik (130), Grayson Glover (140) and Corey Patrick (152) also won BL titles. Glover won his second straight.
