Whippert capture ECC, Plainville holds off Berlin
Windham had five individual champions as the Whippets nipped Ledyard by 3.5 points to win the ECC Tournament. ... Plainville won its first-ever NWC Tournament with a 10-point win over Berlin, which won 11 of its final 12 matches. Plainville had five champions, including Jesse Cavallaro (119), who won his 4th straight NWC title  only the 5th wrestler in league history to achieve that milestone. Than Tran (103), Nick Cavallaro (112), Justin Mals (140) and Justin Fangiulio (189) also won for Plainville. East Catholic's Nate Shippee (171) was the tournament's outstanding wrestler. .... Windsor cut the lead to five points but Simsbury's Joey Martin (119) pinned Matt Barnes to lift the Trojans to a 43-32 win. Windsor (16-7) finishes with a school-record 16 wins. ... Granby won its first-ever NCCC championship by taking second in the NCCC Tournament. Avon won the tournament, 182-145 over Granby and had two champions. The Bears had three champs. Stafford's Lukas Milhialik (171) was the outstanding wrestler and fast fall award winner.  ... Danbury had finalists in 10 of 14 weight classes and produced eight champions as the Hatters won its 18th straight FCIAC championship with a 100-point win over second place Fairfield. Westhill's Charles Cycoon (171) won the outstanding wrestler award. ...  Lyman Memorial won its first outright COC championship with four individual champions with a 24-point win over Cheney Tech. ... New Milford narrowly slipped past New Milford to capture the SWC Tournament and claim the league championship. New Milford won by just two points. ... Bristol Eastern (23-2, 7-0) rolled past arch-rival Bristol Central, 50-18, to win its first CCC South championship since 1997. ... Rockville beat South Windsor to win its second straight CCC East title.

Weekend preview
League titles up for grabs
It's League Championship Weekend with most leagues in the state holding conference tournaments. The ECC, FCIAC and SCC begin on Friday with preliminary round wrestling. Windham, Montville and Ledyard will battle for the ECC Tournament at Bacon Academy. Xavier and Amity are expected to battle for the SCC Tournament crown at Guilford. ... In the NCCC, Granby and Avon are expected to battle for the tournament and league title while in the COC, Lyman Memorial, Ellis Tech and Cheney Tech will all contend for the league title. ... New Milford and Bethel are the top favorites in the SWC. ... Team results from the ECC, NCCC, COC and SWC Tournaments count toward determining the league champion. ... Bristol Eastern (22-2, 6-0) can clinch the CCC South title with a win over rival Bristol Central (7-10, 5-1) Saturday at 6 p.m. But if Central wins, there will likely be a 3-way tie with BC, Eastern and Southington (7-10, 5-1). ... Rockville (22-3, 4-0) can clinch the CCC East title with a win over South Windsor Saturday. The CCC doesn't hold conference tournaments.

Plainville claims NWC title, Granby unbeaten in NCCC
Plainville (18-4, 6-0 NWC) won its first NWC title since 1997 with an easy 64-6 win over Rocky Hill. ... Granby completed its first undefeated season in the NCCC with a 45-20 win over Canton. The Bears, only in their 6th varsity season, are 15-5 overall and 7-0 in the NCCC. Granby can claim its first NCCC title by finishing first or second in Saturday's NCCC Tournament at Suffield. Granby's Aaron Cardenas (275) improved to 24-1. ..  RHAM took a pair of one-point decisions at 130 and 140 pounds as the Sachems handed Berlin its second NWC loss with a 33-27 victory. ... Farmington (20-4) and Montville (31-3) set new school records for most wins in a season with victories over East Catholic and Bacon Academy, respectively. ... Windham clinched the ECC Small Division regular season title with a 69-9 win over New London. ... Amity (24-3, 9-0) finished undefeated in the SCC for the second straight year with a 50-18 win over Derby. ... Cheshire captain Andy Stabell (152) earned a major decision as the Rams beat East Haven, 34-33 and ended the season with five straight wins. ... Bristol Eastern rolled past Platt to set up Saturday's city battle with rival Bristol Central for the CCC South title. Eastern (22-2, 6-0) can win the title with a win while Central (7-10, 5-1) can grab a share of the title with Eastern and Southington (11-14, 5-1) if they win.  ... Ridgefield beat Darien, 54-21, to win its third straight FCIAC Eastern Division title.

New England tourney
CANTON, Mass., Feb. 7 -- In a battle of former All-Americans, Elena Pirozhkov of Greenfield, Mass., beat the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the country, Stefenie Shaw of Waterford, 7-0, Saturday to win the 150-pound weight class at the second annual New England Girls Wrestling Championship tournament. Katie Prussia (138) of Woodstock finished second while Woodstock's Megan Corden (119) was third and Woodstock's Ashley Miles (112) was fourth. East Lyme's Robyn Engel (101) also took third. ... Danbury is finally No. 1 in the state power rankings as compiled by Griswold's Dave Nowakowski. The Hatters overtook Windham this weekend. .
