Mt. Anthony heats up at Eagle Classic
Mt. Anthony endured a 2½ bus ride to Connecticut without heat and warmed up by winning the Eagle Classic for the 9th straight year over No. 3 Berlin, 59-39. The defending New England champions had five champs. South Windsor’s Anthony Valles (103), New Fairfield’s Chris Fusco (119), RHAM’s Mike Karpman (140), Windham’s Kurtis Strout (145), Bran Crudden (160) and Ferdinand Quiles (189), Killingly’s Dave Loomis (171), Hartford Public’s Brian Stanford (215) and Nonnewaug’s Andy Dohan (275) were state winners. No. 5 Windham was third with 37 points. ... Farmington (11-1) swept bouts with Bacon Academy, Terryville and Wolcott Tech. ... New Canaan (14-3) beat Wethersfield, Cheney Tech and Weston/Barlow. ... Morgan won three matches while Middletown won four to meet in the finals of the Morgan Duals. But the bout was postponed due to blizzard conditions. ... Saturday's quad meet at Pomperaug with Platt, Wilton, Masuk and Fairfield Ludlowe has been cancelled.

Danbury moves to 14-0
Top-ranked Danbury took advantage of 12 forfeits to easily beat Warren Harding of Bridgeport, 78-6 while the Hatters (14-0) used seven pins and a pair of tech falls to beat Staples, 70-9. Will Esposito (160) was the only DHS wrestler to earn two wins on the mat. … Weston/Barlow improved to 5-8 with an easy 61-16 win over Platt Tech/West Haven.

Thursday, Jan. 20
Greenwich, Montville prevail in thrillers
Trumbull won eight of 14 bouts but Greenwich had five pins to lead the Cardinals (13-3, 10-2) to a 33-30 win over Trumbull (14-4, 7-2). The Eagle had only two pins. "They finished better than we did," Trumbull coach Ted Oczkowski told The Greenwich Time. "It’s always a competitive meet when we wrestle Greenwich, so we knew that those three-point swings would be the deciding factor." Mike Damiano (135) improved to 15-3 as he iced the bout with a pin in 3:57. … Waterford trimmed a 19-point deficit to one with one weight class remaining but Montville’s Pat Ryan (125) rallied to beat Chris Ebersole, 6-4 and give undefeated Montville (9-1, 4-0) a 34-30 win over the Lancers (9-4, 2-1). “We teach our kids to never quit, and these kids don't,” Montville coach Gary Wilcox told the New London Day. “They're a wonderful group of kids. They're very coachable, and they give me everything they have every single day. I'm very proud of them.” … Missing three starters, Northwestern prevailed in the final bout of the day to beat Wolcott Tech, 39-34 thanks to a win from Steve Warner.

Top-ranked Danbury sweeps three bouts
Danbury’s Matt Tricarico (171) didn’t wrestle Wednesday as the top-ranked Hatters (11-0) swept three FCIAC bouts from Ridgefield, 66-5, Westhill, 61-14 and Brien McMahon, 70-12. Tricarico was disqualified from the 171 final at the Eastern States Classic Saturday after he tried to stand and his head smacked his opponent in the nose. Valley Central’s Ricky Scott couldn’t continue and won by default. "It was definitely not intentional,'' Tricarico told the Danbury News Times. "Last year, they said I punched Scott and I didn't. I've always been taught to wrestle hard, no matter what the score, no matter what the circumstance. I always have to have intensity. I stood straight up. I was down 9-0, and I needed to stand up and try to get a point." Danbury athletic director Chip Salvestrini said there would be no suspension. Tricarico, who won the Class LL and State Open titles last year, is 15-2. "Matt's a great kid,'' Shook told the News Times. "I just think the whole thing was blown out of proportion. If it were anyone else, people wouldn't be talking so much.''

Bristol Central (5-2, 1-1) won eight of nine matches and took advantage of five forfeits to beat Maloney (3-8, 1-2) by a 65-6 score. … South Windsor won four of the first five bouts, all in the upper weights, but Platt (10-7) won seven of the final eight bouts to beat the Bobcats, 51-21. “It’s like a roller coaster,” Platt coach Bryan McCarty took the Meriden Record-Journal. “It’s a product of having eight sophomores and two freshmen in the starting lineup.” …. No. 9 Bristol Eastern (11-0, 3-0) extended its unbeaten streak with an easy 55-9 win over New Britain. … Nonnewaug (10-1, 5-0) extended its Berkshire League-record win streak to 26 straight matches with a 63-12 win over Terryville (2-7). … No. 5 Windham High (11-1, 2-0) received pins from Andrew Blain (103), Ferdinand Quiles (189) and Edwin Narvaez (215) in a 59-12 victory over St. Bernard (1-9, 0-4).

Amity’s Matt Vernik (189) upset previously undefeated Ferdinand Quiles, 5-3 in OT to cut the Whippets’ lead to nine but Windham won the final two bouts to secure the win. … Newington beat host Glastonbury, 45-28 to finish third. … Griswold had six pins in a 60-24 win over St. Bernard. … RHAM outlasted Middletown, 41-38 in a tight Northwest Conference battle.
