Ledyard wins ECC Tourney,
Danbury dominates again
No. 3 Ledyard won only two individual titles and had four wrestlers finish second as the Colonials won the ECC Tournament title for the first time since 2000. A year ago, Windham had rallied from a 14½ deficit to nip Ledyard by 2 points for the title. “Beating the defending ECC champions, that's big for us,” Ledyard’s T.J. Hepburn (125) told the New London Day. “Guys just went out and wrestled hard. We told them we needed points and they went out and got them.” On the strength of a 4-for-4 performance in the finals, No. 5 Waterford (186.5) slipped past No. 6 Windham (180.5) and Montville (166.5) to finish second and clinch the ECC Small title. The three teams were separated by one point entering the finals. "I can go back to a bunch of our matches where we had kids on their back and we couldn't finish off with pins, those little things make a difference and it's things like that that will haunt me,” Windham coach Pat Risley told the Norwich Bulletin. “But we lost to, I think a better team right now...they deserve it." … Bristol Eastern (20-3, 5-1) rolled to an easy 48-12 victory over arch-rival Bristol Central (13-5, 4-2). … Conard (21-4, 6-0) captured its first-ever CCC West championship and its first title since 1984 with a 44-30 win over cross-town rival Hall (7-13, 2-4). … No. 10 East Hartford (19-1, 6-0) won a CCC East championship with a 50-27 win over Manchester. … Thanks to three pins and four forfeits, Southington (20-5, 6-0) easily topped New Britain, 51-20 to win its fifth CCC South championship in the last six years. … Thomaston’s Justin Peppas (189) slipped past Holy Cross’ Kevin Blanchard, 9-7, to lead the Bears to a 45-40 win. … Platt (18-11, 2-4) rallied from a 12-point deficit to beat city rival Maloney-Meriden (6-14, 1-5) by a 39-33 score. ...  In the NWC Tournament, No. 4 Berlin held off a charging RHAM to win the title by 18½ points. RHAM (5 champions) had beaten Berlin in three straight finals bouts but Jim Solek (152) stemmed the tide. “This team has had a lot of great accomplishments,” Berlin coach Jim Day told The Herald Press. “They’ve competed against good competition. Now it’s time to polish the apple and get ready for the states.” … No. 1 Danbury scored a tournament record 306½ points to win their 19th straight FCIAC Tournament championship. Danbury had 10 champions in 14 weight classes. Seniors Nick Weyer (130) and Jeff Marra (145) each won their fourth straight FCIAC titles. "They just wrestled great the whole tournament," Danbury coach Ricky Shook told the Danbury News Times. "Our seniors, they did their job. Hopefully it will carry on to next week (at the Class LL meet)." Shook dyed his hair orange after challenging his wrestlers to put 11 wrestlers in the finals. "Getting four FCIACs is a big thing and it was a good thing also to share it with another teammate. But honestly I'm looking forward, to Class LLs, the Open and New Englands," Marra told the News Times. Danbury’s Frank Cammisa (135) was the tournament MVP. … No. 7 New Milford won its second straight SWC championship with a dominating performance. The Green Wave swamped second place New Milford, 201½ to 147. "We expect to reload every year," New Milford’s Pete Stefanatos (130) told the Danbury News Times. "We really expect to be on top every year. It feels good for us to win tonight. We don't want to rely on one class to come into the school and have to rebuild when they leave the school. We want consistency." New Fairfield had 5 chamions while the Wave had four. Pomperaug’s Shawn McKenna (112) handed Brookfield’s Matt Volpe (26-1) his first loss of the season with a 9-1 win in the finals. Bethel’s Nick Palmero (26-0) won by technical fall at 125 but nearly pinned himself. Only because he was awarded a 3-point near fall before he pinned himself did he escape with a victory. He took home the outstanding wrestler award. ... Amity won its second straight SCC Tournament title with six finalists and two champions. Amity outlasted Hand, 166 to 148 with Cheshire third at 113. ... Avon (15-5, 7-0) had four champions as they won the NCCC Tournament and claimed its first league title since 2001. Enfield's Sam Gauvine was the tournament MVP. Casey Yates (125)  and Mike Delmastro (130) each won their 2nd straight COC titles to lead Lyman Memorial to its 2nd straight COC championship. ... Coventry's Mike Cumerford won his 3rd straight COC title and earned tournament MVP honors.

Logjam at top of ECC Small; Berlin, Amity win titles
Windham (20-3, 5-1) won the first four bouts of the match and never looked back to beat Montville, 44-12 and create a three-way tie atop the ECC Small Division. Montville (16-2, 5-1) and Waterford (15-5, 5-1) also share the lead. Whoever places higher in Saturday’s ECC Tournament wins the division title. "Oh it's going to be great," Windham coach Pat Risley told the Norwich Bulletin. "I was just telling someone that this is how we want it to be, it's going to be real exciting. That's how it should be, it's going to make (all three) teams a little hungrier." … New Milford (15-2, 10-0) finished the SWC campaign undefeated with a 47-24 win over New Fairfield. The Green Wave can clinch its second straight title by finishing among the top 3 in Saturday’s SWC Tournament. "It shows that our hard work paid off," New Milford's Pete Stefanatos told the Danbury News Times. "We've been working really hard the last week and a half or two weeks since they beat us." New Fairfield prevailed in a non-conference meet, 35-33 on Jan. 29. … Despite a combined record of 75-19 over the past three years, Xavier (25-7) was again denied a SCC championship when Amity prevailed in a battle of division champions, 43-22. "It stings really bad," Xavier coach Mike Cunningham told The Middletown Press. "But it still doesn’t take away what these kids, especially the seven seniors, have done for me and the hard work they’ve put forth." Xavier’s Willy Squarciafico (119) earned his 101st career victory. "A lot of things didn’t go our way," Cunningham said. "We lost 4-3 and 5-4 in the first two matches tonight and from there, (Amity) got a lot of pins." … Brookfield’s Matt Volpe (112) got a forfeit and finished undefeated at Brookfield (17-5) won its season finale with a 45-24 win over Masuk-Monroe. … Berlin (20-3, 6-0) won its 18th NWC title in 21 years with a 53-15 win over Plainville (10-9, 2-4). "For me to get pumped up about is to think about our senior class walking away as champions," Berlin coach Jim Day told the New Britain Herald. … Brian Martin (112) outlasted Conard’s Brendan Williams to lift No. 8 Bristol Eastern to a 34-25 win over Conard (20-4) in the final bout of the night. With Eastern (19-3) leading by just four, Martin fought off his back twice to win by tech fall, 33-18. … Southington (15-5, 5-0) moved within one victory of the CCC South title with a 67-12 win over Maloney (6-13, 1-4). The Knights can claim the title with a win over New Britain Saturday. … Cheshire (20-7) won the battle of third place teams in the SCC Showdowns with a 44-15 win over Foran. ... Farmington (19-2, 5-1) finished second in the NWC for the first time after erasing a 17-point deficit and beating Middletown, 33-29. Andrew Madej (152) earned a 14-8 decision to clinch the bout. ... Newington (13-8) had nine pins to beat Wethersfield, 63-11 in a CCC West match. ... Simsbury (16-9) earned its 500th victory as a program with a 68-12 win over Windsor

Xavier, Amity to battle
for SCC championship
The Southern Connecticut Conference has its SCC Showdowns Wednesday with Xavier and Amity meeting for the league title in Woodbridge. Xavier won the Northern Division while Amity won the Southern Division. Other matches and seeds include – No. 2: Hand at Shelton; No. 3: Cheshire at Foran; No. 4: Guilford at Derby; No. 5: East Haven at Jonathan Law; No. 6: Branford at Fairfield Prep. … Conard (20-3, 5-0 CCC West) can clinch sole possession of its first-ever CCC West championship with a win over Hall Saturday in West Hartford. Conard's last title came in 1984 in the CCIL (Central Conn. Interscholastic League). ... Danbury (21-0) finished undefeated with a 65-9 win over Norwalk on Monday. The win gives Danbury what is believed to be a state-record 602 dual meet wins as a program that began in 1968. However, research into the Conard program, which began in 1960, isn't complete.
