Two OT wins lift Mt. Anthony past Danbury, 31-30
DANBURY, Dec. 18 – Mt. Anthony, Vt., won a pair of overtime matches, a one-point decision at 130 pounds and picked up a key major decision at 135 to hold off Danbury, 31-30, in a thrilling match before over 2,000 vocal fans at Danbury High. The visiting Patriots (7-0) took a 19-0 lead by winning the first five bouts of the match. Mt. Anthony won just two of the remaining nine matches, including a 3-1 win by Brad Sawyer in overtime at 215 pounds, but it was enough. "Things were tight from start to finish," Mt. Anthony coach Scott Legacy told the Bennington Banner. "But the guys did a great job winning points in a very hostile environment."

MAU’s Zak Hale opened the match with a 10-9 win over J.D. Damici at 125 pounds. At 130, Tyler White nipped Danbury’s Shane Jennings by a point, 7-6. At 135, Ben Prior’s eight-point win over Danbury’s Tyler Arsenault gave Mt. Anthony an extra point for a major decision. Mt. Anthony has won three of the last four against Danbury (1-1) and leads the overall series, 7-3. It was the closest match in the 10-year series.

Warde led 9-0 after the first two matches of the night but Danbury won six of the next seven bouts to take control of the match. … New Canaan’s Hunter Eldred (140) pinned in the final bout to lift the Rams past Greenwich, 40-32. Greenwich built leads of 14-0 and 23-6 but the Rams won six of the last eight bouts to earn the win. … Pomperaug’s Rob Isaacs (215) had a one-point decision over Newtown’s Aaron Nezvesky while teammate Brendan Quinn (135) earned a crucial three-point decision as Pomperaug opened the SWC campaign with a tight 37-36 win over Newtown. …. Two tournaments move due to axing of Hartford Pub program
HARTFORD, Nov. 11 – With the elimination of the Hartford Public wrestling program, the Greater Hartford Invitational was in danger of folding because the Owls hosted the tournament in their new facility last winter after five years at East Hartford High. Tournament director Marco Tirillo from nearby Classical Magnet in Hartford struggled to find a new home for the tournament before Hall High in West Hartford stepped up to keep the tournament alive.
The 4th annual Brawl at the Pub will be held at new Sports Medical Science Academy facility in Hartford near Dillon Stadium.
n What other fallout is there from the elimination of the Hartford Public program that began in 1966 and produced seven State Open champions. Leave your message on our new Facebook page.

Budget cuts eliminate Hartford Public program
HARTFORD, Nov. 8 -- Budget cuts have eliminated Hartford Public's wrestling program for the upcoming season. However, the program has been an opportunity for many young men in the school to blossom and grow. Paul Meyers, who has coached at the school for 14 years, said he would be willing to coach for free if enough money can be raised to pay for the program. Lori Riley wrote an outstanding piece in the Hartford Courant explaining how the program has helped some young Public students. Can a last-minute push save the program?
