Darien nips Derby to earn first tourney victory
Darien won it first-ever wrestling tournament, edging Derby by four points to win the 21st annual Derby Invitational, 163-159. Darien had four champions and prevailed in three head-to-head battles with Derby in the finals. The two teams were tied entering the finals. Darien’s Dimitri Chagares (130), Max Kiplinger (160) and Jared Murphy (189) beat Derby wrestlers in the finals. Chagares beat Derby’s Kyle Russell, 14-2. Kiplinger pinned Derby’s Matt Nicolari in 28 seconds while Murphy pin Derby’s Luis Casco in 2:54. Darien’s Lars Remole (140) also won a title by outlasting Gilbert’s Dylan Jefferies, 10-0.
…With five champions and eight finalists, West Springfield, Mass., won the 10th annual Plainville Invitational for the second time in three years with a dominant performance. Bristol Central finished second. Matt Tanner (145) of host Plainville earned the tournament’s outstanding wrestler award. … Ridgefield had eight finalists and six champions to win the fifth annual Fairfield Ludlowe Invitational with a 268-248 win over Staples. Host Ludlowe was third with four finalists and one champion. Ridgefield's Travis Tiger (171) was named outstanding wrestler. ... Jake O’Dell (160) was named the outstanding wrestler and four other Bobcat teammates won championships as South Windsor won the Skip Arden Tournament for the third straight year with a 30-point win over Stamford. Matt Piazza (215), Craig Sassu (135) and Andrew Chase (112) each won titles as Bristol Eastern won the 33rd annual Pomperaug Holiday Tournament for the first time. ... No. 1 New Milford beat Hand to win the Berlin Invitational. ... With 10 of 12 wrestlers finishing among the top four in their weight classes, Greenwich won the Shelton Invitational. ... Dylan Bryant (119), Shane Jennings (130), Ryan Peterson (152), Will Jack (189) and Kevin Jack (96) each won titles for Danbury at the Clarkstown (NY) North tournament with five other New York State teams.

Shelton, Danbury earn wins in openers
No. 10 Shelton used six pins and three forfeits to beat East Haven in its season opener, 58-24. … No. 2 Danbury rolled to an easy 78-3 win over an undermanned New Canaan squad that forfeited 11 weight classes. … In battle of two programs with plenty of first-year wrestlers, Gilbert outlasted Wolcott Tech, 45-23 in a Berkshire League battle. … Torrington’s Dean Tsopandies (285)  earned a pin in 52 seconds in his match against Gilbert. .. Coach Jennifer Audette and her Ellis Tech squad earned their first win of the season with a 42-27 win over the co-op team of University High/SMSA from Hartford.

Green Wave tops Avon for 32nd straight win
Top-ranked New Milford opened the season with 47-30 win over Avon to earn their 32nd straight dual meet victory. Conor Kirkegard (112), Nick Amorando (130), Andrew Golden (135) and Ian Curtis (140) had pins for the Green Wave. ... Glastonbury won five of the final six matches to slip past Simsbury, 38-36 in a CCC West battle. Simsbury had six pins but the Tomahawks won eight of the 14 bouts to earn the win. ... With nine pins, Greenwich earned a 54-24 victory over Darien in coach George Albano’s first match as head coach. …Thanks to 11 forfeits, Pomperaug easily won its season opener with a 73-6 win over Joel Barlow/Notre Dame-Fairfield. Pomperaug’s Mike Calo (152) beat Tom Starkey, 8-4 in the most competitive match of the evening …. Nick Catlin (135) and Peter Clark (140) each had one-point decisions to help Fairfield Ludlowe outlast Platt Tech/West Haven, 35-33. Catlin beat Chris Blagmon, 5-4 and Clark beat Joe Sojka, 9-8. …  Pins from Ryan Tharas (189) and Mike Cupo (215) in the final two matches of the night lifted New Fairfield to a 42-36 win over Immaculate. There were seven forfeits out of the 14 weight classes. ... With six pins and five forfeits, No. 3 Xavier easily took care of New Haven, 69-10 ... Derby had five pins in a 49-23 win over Holy Cross that gave Hall of Fame coach Buster Jadach his 500th career victory. Jadach is the first Connecticut coach to win 500 dual meets. … New Britain had nine pins in a 63-18 win over Windsor for its first win in two years. … Thanks to eight forfeits, Berlin rolled to a 68-12 win over Fermi. … With six pins, No. 8 Bristol Eastern outlasted RHAM, 48-27 in a competitive match. … Waterford won five of the first six matches and held on for a 40-36 victory over Montville … Bacon Academy had 11 pins in a 78-3 victory over New London. … Ledyard received seven pins in a 59-9 victory over Killingly. … Stamford’s Ben St. Pierre (130) tied a state record with a pin in 5 seconds but it wasn’t enough as Wilton outlasted Stamford, 44-24.

New Milford is No. 1 in preseason poll
NORWICH, Dec. 13 – In the Norwich Bulletin’s preseason top 10 wrestling poll, New Milford received the top nod in balloting by 15 coaches from across the state. New Milford received just three first place votes but 10 second place votes, a third and fourth to finish nine points ahead of Danbury. The Hatters received nine first place votes but they also received a pair of third place votes, a fourth place vote, a pair of fifth place votes and a sixth place vote.

Xavier and Bacon Academy also received first place votes. It's the 29th consecutive year for the Bulletin's top 10 wrestling poll.

CT Wrestling Wire also conducted the first of weekly top 10 polls and their poll of coaches e-mailing results had Danbury listed at No. 1 with 12 first place votes. New Milford was second.
