Windham wins slimmed down Eagle Classic
Saturday morning’s snow wiped virtually the entire high school wrestling schedule. The only tournament held in Connecticut was the 18th annual Eagle Classic with six teams. Several teams wanted to participate but were not allowed because their local schools cancelled all athletic activities. Some parents volunteered to drive athletes to the meet but some schools didn’t allow that. Some bus companies refused to drive due to liability concerns. Six teams participated in the event, which was won by Windham High with 195 points and six individual champions and 10 wrestlers in the finals. Windham’s Miguel Calixto was the tournament’s outstanding wrestler and he also won the fast fall award. ... Organizers tried to hold the Morgan Duals but most teams were unable to show up and it was cancelled. ... With four individual champions and six finalists, Glastonbury finished second at the Hurricane Invitational in Warwick , R.I. with 183 points, 17 off the pace set by tournament champion East Providence with 200.

Friday, Jan. 20
No. 7 Warde beats Bristol Central
With four pins and a technical fall, No. 7 Fairfield Warde was too much for Bristol Central in a 43-20 victory in a quad match Friday in Fairfield. Warde improved to 11-1 with wins over Westhill, 55-9 and Fairfield Prep, 46-23. Bristol Central improved to 13-2 with wins over Westhill and Fairfield Prep. … In a quad match held Friday afternoon to beat Saturday’s approaching snowstorm, No. 6 Farmington (17-0) beat Griswold, 45-30, Avon and Terryville. The Indians have won 21 of their last 22 matches dating back to last season. … Due to the forecast of snow for Saturday morning, the 30th annual New Milford Invitational, the Valley of Champions Duals in Oxford, the Somers Mid-Season Duals were cancelled.

Thursday, Jan. 19
With pins, Avon pulls away from Somers
Winning by two, Avon (7-7, 6-0 NCCC) ripped off six pins in seven matches to pull away from Somers (14-3, 4-1) and remain undefeated in the NCCC with a 62-18 victory. The Falcons have won 32 straight league bouts since 2007. … Wolcott Tech (13-5, 1-0) won its first-ever Constitution State Conference bout with a 63-18 win over Platt Tech/West Haven. …Monday's match between Mt. Anthony, Vt., and Danbury was rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 6 in Danbury at 6 p.m.

Danbury dominates No. 8 Trumbull
On Senior Night, top-ranked Danbury (10-0) showed no mercy in a 69-3 win over No. 8 Trumbull with 10 pins. The Eagles slip to 18-2 and 9-1 in the FCIAC. …No. 3 Xavier had eight pins and a tech fall in a 56-22 victory over Shelton. …Despite some injuries and the flu, No. 6 Farmington (14-0, 5-0 CCC West) still had enough to handle Hall in a 53-18 decision. … Bristol Eastern’s Ethan Greider (113) improved to 14-0 as the Lancers beat Berlin, 57-14. … Greenwich won the final five matches, four by pin, to rally past Stamford, 53-26. … Maloney (14-6) earned its 14th win of the season with a 61-18 victory Hartford. … In its first home match of the season, No. 9 Southington recognized its alumni and beat Newington, 40-21. .. Lorenzo Hernandez (220) had a key pin to lift Fitch to a 41-31 win over Woodstock Academy. … In a battle of contenders for the Class S title, Old Saybrook/Westbrook received pins from Brandon Walsh (138) and Jermaine Frazier (220) in a 38-26 win over Griswold. … Nonnewaug (12-2, 5-0 BL) saw a 21-point lead shrink to one with two matches remaining but the Chiefs got pins in the final matches to beat Terryville (13-3, 4-1 BLy a 42-29 score. … In a hard-fought SWC contest, Oxford (10-3) had 7 pins in a 54-24 victory over Masuk (13-6, 5-2 SWC). … SMSA/University won three of the final four matches to earn its first NCCC victory with a 41-36 win over Canton. … Fairfield Ludlowe (10-4) received eight pins in a 61-16 victory over Brien McMahon. …Five pins helped Bristol Central outlast Platt High, 37-30. … Ridgefield coach Gary Tiger earned his 100th career win as the Tigers beat Bridgeport Central and New Fairfield.

No new teams joined the Norwich Bulletin's top 10 coaches poll this week but there was some movement. For the second straight week, top-ranked Danbury (9-0) received all 15 first place votes in the poll. Hand (14-0) remained at No. 2 but Xavier moved up two spots to No. 3. New Milford and Ledyard dropped one spot each. No. 9 Southington swapped places with No. 10 Windham. ... Additional news from the weekend includes: No. 7 Fairfield Warde had three individual champions and four finalists to outlast Salem, N.H. and win the Merrimack Hall of Fame tournament in Merrimack, N.H. Shelton was fifth in the tournament with two individual champions. Shelton's Ed Hunt (138) was named the tournament's most outstanding wrestler … Cheney Tech’s Matt Cadiz (132) and New Fairfield’s Joey Amorando (285) each finished second in their respective weight classes at the Mt. Anthony Invitational in Bennington, Vt. … Harding’s John Maldonado (113) had a pin in eight seconds against Masuk. … Brackets for the Greater Hartford Invitational and the Natick (MA) Invitational have been posted. … Amity finished seventh at the Natick Invitational with Tyler Bishop (126) winning a title
