FARGO, N.D., July 20 – Two Connecticut wrestlers finished second at the USA Wrestling national championship meet in Fargo, North Dakota. Southington’s Zac Murillo finished second in the Cadet freestyle (ages 15-16) competition at 88 pounds while Hotchkiss School-Lakeville wrestler Angus Cowell (220) finished second in the Junior freestyle (ages 17-18) competition.

In a rematch of the Northeast Regional final, Pennsylvania’s Gavin Teasdale beat Murillo to win the Cadet freestyle national championship on Friday. Teasdale handed Murillo his first loss of the tournament with a 14-4 decision. Teasdale also won the Northeast Regional.

Murillo, who went 21-14 and was sixth in Class LL at 106 for Southington High this past winter, won his first six matches of the freestyle tournament. He didn’t give up a point in his first four matches. He beat Montana’s Brayden Schwalbe in the semifinals, 13-2 and South Dakota’s Brawley Lamar in the quarterfinals, 14-6. Murillo will be a junior this upcoming winter at Southington.

Cowell wrestled at Hotchkiss in Lakeville this past winter and won a New England championship. He captured the Canadian Junior Greco-Roman national title in April. At Fargo, Cowell went 9-1 with four wins by technical fall (10 points or better) and two pins. He beat Illinois’ Derrick Maisonet, 5-3 to earn a spot in the final. Utah’s Roy Nash, the defending freestyle champion, beat Cowell, 11-0 in the championship match. Nash won the freestyle and Greco-Roman tournaments in Fargo. Cowell will be a senior at Hotchkiss this fall.

Five state wrestlers earn All-American honors at NHSCA
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va., April 7 – Five Connecticut wrestlers earned All-American honors at the National High School Coaches Association’s national championship wrestling tournaments this weekend.

Danbury sophomore Johnny Garcia (160) finished second, New Fairfield freshman Taylor Shay (120) took third, Danbury junior Kevin Jack (120) finished fourth, New Fairfield freshman Andrew Damico (160) finished sixth while Xavier freshman Dakota Carden (145) finished seventh.

Forty-five wrestlers from Connecticut participated in the NHSCA’s annual senior, junior, sophomore and freshman national tournaments.

Garcia earned All-American honors for the second straight year with his second place finish in the sophomore tournament. He won four straight bouts with two pins to earn a spot in the finals but he lost to Ohio's Ben Schram, 5-2.

Garcia is just the fourth wrestler in state history to earn a spot in a NHSCA final and the first since Shelton's Patrick Gillen (215) took second in the Senior Nationals in 2011. Ledyard's T.J. Hepburn is the only Connecticut wrestler to win a NHSCA title when he won at 135 pounds in the Junior Nationals in 2006.

Shay had an impressive performance in the freshman tournament at 120. His only loss was a 2-1 decision to Kellen Devlin of New York, who finished second. Shay won six matches in a row in the consolation round to finish third, including a 7-0 win over Brady Ford of New Jersey in the consolation final.

Shay won five of his six consolation round bouts by six points or more. He finished 8-1 in the tournament.

Jack earned All-American honors for the second straight year with his fourth place finish in the junior tournament at 120 pounds. Jack won his first three bouts including a 5-3 OT win over Louisiana’s Cody Hill before getting pinned in the quarterfinals by Colorado’s Mitchell Fiansilver.

But Jack won three straight consolation round bouts, including a 2-1 OT decision over Joshua Wimer of Ohio to earn a berth in the consolation final. But Jack lost to Florida’s James Flint, 1-0. Jack went 6-2 in the tournament.

Damico (160) won his first two bouts in the freshman tournament including a 12-6 win over New Jersey’s Ellias Vega in the quarterfinals. But Damico lost in the semifinals and dropped two consolation round bouts to finish sixth. Vega beat Damico, 4-3 to finish fifth.

Xavier freshman Dakota Carden (145) was seventh with a record of 5-2. Carden dropped his first match of the tournament but won four straight in the consolation round to earn All-American status. Carden beat Tennessee’s Kaleeb Rappy, 5-4 in his third match of the tournament to remain alive. He followed that with a 3-1 OT win over Jalaa Darwich of New Jersey.

Connecticut finished ninth in the freshman tournament with 61 points. New Milford’s Brett Leonard (138) and St. Bernard’s Matt Dowler (106) each won three bouts. In the sophomore tournament, Connecticut was 22nd with 30 points. New Milford’s Zach Arnold (132), NFA’s Jacob Martin (106) and Windham’s Sebby Ruffino (113) each won two matches each.

In the senior tournament, no Connecticut wrestler earned All-American honors. New Milford’s Mike Amorando (160), Somers’ Kyle Foster (195) and Bacon Academy’s Matt McAllister (132) each won two bouts.

Former Windham High wrestler Miquel Calixto (126), who wrestled his senior year at Mt. Anthony Union in Bennington, Vt., earned All-American honors for the third time. He went 6-1 with five straight wins in the consolation round including a 1-0 win over Dylan Realbuto of New York in the consolation semifinals and a 8-6 win over Hunter Bamford of Nebraska to take third.

INDIANA, Pa., -- Foran’s C.J. Luth won five matches and was one win shy of earning a medal at the FloNationals tournament at Indiana University. Luth, wrestling at 132 pounds, lost his second match of the tournament but proceeded to win his next four bouts before getting eliminated in the quarterfinal round of the consolation round.

Xavier’s Elliott Antler (170) advanced as far as the quarterfinals before losing two matches. Antler (2-2) and Luth were the only Connecticut wrestlers to win at least two matches in the tournament.
