Windham regains title at Lancer Invitational
For the first time since 2007, a Connecticut team won the Lancer Invitational as Windham High outlasted Southington, 180-171½. The Whippets were led by Mike Ruffino (120), who was named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler. Spencer Hall (182) and Nick Poulin (220) also won titles while four Whippets finished second. For Southington, Zach Maxwell (195) and Ryan Dupuis (160) won titles while Alex Martin (152) and Nate Solomon (132) each finished second. Windham was the last Connecticut champion in 2007. .. With four individual champions and 10 finalists, Farmington won the 10th annual Indian Classic for the sixth time with a dominating 218-144 win over Foran-Milford. Bacon Academy’s Howie Kilpatrick won beat Foran’s Carl Luth, 6-5 in the final at 138 was named the outstanding wrestler. … With four champions and nine finalists, Fairfield Ludlowe won its own Ludlowe Invitational for the second straight year. Ludlowe outlasted Cheshire, 301-244. Nick Crowe of Fairfield Prep (285) was named outstanding wrestler … For the third straight year, Ward Melville from Long Island, N.Y., won the Guilford Invitiational with Fairfield Warde taking second and Xavier finishing third. With five individual champions, Ward Melville topped Warde by just 13 points with a 264-251 victory. Xavier also had five individual champions while Fairfield Warde was led by Pharoah Eaton (130) who was named outstanding wrestler. … With a tournament record 327 points, Mt. Anthony, Vermont won the 25th annual Pin Down MS Invitational in Berlin, easily outdistancing Ledyard with 189 points. The Colonels had five wrestlers finish second and 11 wrestlers finish in the top six of their respective weight classes. … For the seventh time in eight years, Derby won its own Derby Invitational with a 18-point victory over Branford, 181-163. Derby, which won the 23rd annual event for the 10th time, had three individual champions and eight finalists. Gilbert’s Logan Smith (145) was named outstanding wrestler. ... With four individual champions and nine finalists, Westhill of Stamford easily won the third annual Shelton Invitational over Shelton. Westhill had finished second the past two years in the tournament. ... West Springfield, Mass., won the 12th annual Plainville Invitational for the third time in the last five years. With four individual champions, Bristol Central finished second. ... Pomperaug Tourney
is called off
Due to the tragic events on Friday in Newtown at the Sandy Hook Elementary School, the 35th annual Pomperaug Invitational tournament in Southbury has been cancelled. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families most effected by this tragedy. It is at times like this that we must pull together as communities and families and try to find some way to show, that beyond isolated events of evil, that there is much more good in the world,” Pomperaug wrestling coach Mike O’Keefe said. “Tell someone that they are loved, give someone a hug.”

Thursday, Dec. 13
Emotional night and victory for Law
On the first night of a new season, the Jonathan Law wrestling family took a moment to remember one of their own. There was no match wrestled Thursday at 160 pounds against East Haven in honor of the late Jet Krumwiede, a 2009 Law graduate and captain of the 2009 Law squad. Jonathan Law dedicated the match to Krumwiede and his family and the East Haven squad also presented flowers to the family. Krumwiede died after a kayaking accident in Long Island Sound in late October. In the match, Law had six pins in a 51-16 decision over East Haven. … New Fairfield had five pins including four in under a minute and took advantage of six forfeits to earn a 75-6 season opening win over Brookfield.

Wednesday, Dec. 12
Greenwich rallies
to beat Ridgefield
Trailing by nine points, Greenwich won the final four matches with three pins and a forfeit to earn a season-opening 42-27 victory over Ridgefield, which also forfeited three weight classes … With three pins and seven forfeits, Fairfield Ludlowe rolled to a 70-3 decision over Darien. … Five pins and four decisions lifted Simsbury to a surprisingly lopsided 54-4 decision over Bristol Central. … Farmington opened the season with a big 52-16 victory over Berlin, receiving pins from Drew Dahlberg, Garrett Hastings and Dovydas Simanskis. … Four straight pins from 126 to 145 pounds helped Bristol Eastern beat Southington, 37-28. ...… After going winless a year ago, the co-op team from St. Bernard/Norwich Tech/Wheeler won a match with a 59-24 win over East Lyme. Six St. Bernard wrestlers had pins. … Jake Caskey (132) and Patrick Bogan (170) had key victories to lead Montville past Waterford, 40-27. … New London received seven pins in a 66-12 win over Fitch. … Nate Roy, Ryan Bailen and Jamar Jones each had pins to lead Middletown to a hard-earned 34-33 victory over Conard. …With five pins and eight victories, Xavier topped Branford, 46-34. … Six pins helped Warren Harding earn a 42-39 decision over Norwalk … Danbury opened its season with a strong 69-9 decision over Staples while New Milford looked sharp in a 54-25 victory over Oxford. …

Wednesday, Dec. 5
Newest edition of record book available
The 11th edition of the Connecticut High School Wrestling Record Book has been released. Click on the link above to check it out. … With four pins and four forfeits, Chase Collegiate remained undefeated with a 58-16 win over New York Military Academy. Chase topped Marianapolis Prep, 48-23 last Wednesday in its season opening contest.

Induction dinner is April 20, 2013
Tickets on sale now for HOF induction
Tickets for now on sale for the 2013 induction of six outstanding individuals from Connecticut into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame by the Connecticut chapter of the Hall of Fame on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at the MGM Grand Hotel at Foxwoods Resort Casino. Six men will be honored for their contribution to the sport of wrestling and our communities. The men are:

n John Chacho, the former coach at Staples High in Westport and former official
n Frank Chaves, the former coach at Simsbury High and a current official
n Ken DeStefanis, the former coach at Central Connecticut State University and current youth wrestling club coach
n Staff Sergeant Joseph Kapacziewski, a former wrestler at Bristol Eastern High, who is currently an Army Ranger. He has been on multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan.
n Bernard Nasser, a long-time official and former coach at Fitch High in Groton
n Ricky Shook, the coach at Danbury High School

Chaco, Chaves, DeStefanis, Nasser and Shook will receive a Lifetime Achievement award for coaches, officials, media or contributors with at least 20 years of service. Kapacziewski is being honored with a Medal of Courage, an award for a wrestler or former wrestler who has overcome insurmountable challenges.

Tickets are $85 each for adults and $25 each for children.

Three CT wrestlers could be on mat at Grapple at the Garden
NEW YORK -- Three Connecticut wrestlers could be on the mat at the Grapple at the Garden on Sunday, Dec. 16 when 14 top collegiate wrestling teams compete at Madison Square Garden in New York for the first time with dual meets at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Former Middletown High star Richard Perry (197) is 11-1 this season and ranked No. 19 in the nation for Bloomsburg University, which faces Missouri at 12:30 p.m. Tyler Banks (Griswold, 1-1) and Dalton Ahern (Old Saybrook, 2-6) are each wrestling at 157 for Hoftstra, which faces Iowa at 10:30 a.m. and Ohio State at 12:30 p.m. Watch the video.

Jack earns medal at Super 32 tournament
GREENSBORO, N.C., Oct. 21 – Danbury’s Kevin Jack (120) was one of several Connecticut wrestlers participating in the Super 32 preseason national wrestling tournament this weekend. Jack went 6-3 but finished sixth, the only state wrestler to earn a medal.

South Windsor’s Casey Mitchell (152) and Newington’s Chris Chorzepa (170) each went 3-2 in the tournament but didn’t medal. Newington's Brian Amato was 4-2. Nonnewaug’s John Dagostino (160), Fairfield Warde's Charles Kane and Barlow's Emmett LiCastri were each 1-2 while Xavier’s Elliott Antler (170) and New Milford's Halim Bourjeili were 0-2.

The two-day tournament features some of the top high school wrestlers in the nation, including 182 state champions. There were 1,900 high school and middle school wrestlers in the tournament competing on 27 mats.

Two state wrestlers win world titles
BUDAPEST, Hungary, Sept. 21 -- Two Connecticut wrestlers won world freestyle titles on Friday at the Veterans World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Coventry’s Shirzad Ahmadi, the long-time wrestling coach at Stafford High, went 4-0 to win his eighth Veterans world title at 63 kilograms (139 pounds) in Division F (ages 61-65). Also winning a world title was South Windsor’s Steven Turgeon at 58 kg (127 pounds) in Division E (ages 56-60).

Two former wrestling coaches inducted in coaches Hall of Fame
SOUTHINGTON, Nov. 15 -- Two former wrestling coaches were inducted into the Connecticut High School Coaches Association’s (CHSCA) Hall of Fame at its 36th annual induction ceremony at the Aqua Turf in Southington at 7 p.m. Conard’s Rob Cersosimo and Bulkeley-Hartford coach Peter Kokinis were among 9 coaches and one sportswriter to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Cersosimo was the head wrestling coach at Conard for 8 seasons compiling a record of 101-54, including 6 straight winning seasons from 1996-2001. He led Conard to a 3rd place finish in Class LL in 1999. Cersosimo also coached football and tennis at Conard. Kokinis coached wrestling at Bulkeley for several years and one year at Wethersfield High. He also coached football and baseball at Bulkeley, winning over 250 games on the diamond and 15 straight city championships.

Perry named coach at NFA
NORWICH, Sept. 1 -- Former NFA wrestler Greg Perry was been hired as the new wrestling coach at NFA in early August after coach Roy Wentworth decided to retire. Perry was an assistant coach at NFA from 2001-03 and is currently teaching health at NFA.
