Biscaha, Crowell wrestlers of the week, Springfield wins Doug Parker Tournament

CO-NEWA Wrestler of Week: Devin Biscaha, Springfield College, 157 pounds, SR, (Jackson, NJ). The returning national Champion returned to the mat and won one of the toughest weight class at the Doug Parker Invitational. In the finals Biscaha beat returning All-American Jorge Lopez in a very exciting 7-6 decision. This match was a barnburner between two wrestlers with very unorthodox styles.  Biscaha was 5-0 on the day in his first competition of the year.

CO-NEWA Wrestler of Week: Colin Crowell, Roger Williams University, 165 pounds, SR, (Hampstead, NH). The 2X National Qualifier and Region Champ went 5-0 on his way to the Doug Parker Championship at 165.  Crowell went 4-0 last week to win the RWU Invite and continued his dominance at the weight class with another tournament win at the Doug Parker.  Crowell had 3 pins and beat Division II All American Braden Turner of East Stroudsburg 8-4 in the finals.

NEWA Rookie Wrestler of Week: Hunter Ayen, Springfield College, 197 pounds, FR, (Gouverneur, NY). Ayen won the Doug Parker Invitational going 4-0 with two pins and a major decision.   Ayen pinned his first two opponents including returning national qualifier Josh Roometua in the quarterfinals in 2:50. He had an 8-2 decision in the semifinals. In the finals Ayen beat another returning national qualifier Shane Parcel by major decision 8-0.

Western New England’s Jamison Sacco continued his impressive season winning the Doug Parker Tournament at 285 pounds.  Sacco was 5-0 with 5 pins.  4 of those pins did not make it out of the first period.  Sacco is now 12-0 on the season with 11 pins and a win coming via forfeit.  Of those 11 pins 10 were first period pins. His teammate Sean McAllister had another good day taking 5th place at 141 going 5-2 on the day...

Springfield College had a great weekend winning the Doug Parker Invitational that they hosted.  Springfield placed 9 wrestlers in the top 6  of their respective weight classes.  Tommy Casper was the third finalist (NEWA wrestlers of week Biscaha 157, Ayen 197) for the Pride taking 2nd at 125.  Casper won his first 3 before losing to nationally ranked Bewak of Johns Hopkins in the finals.  Erick Hamrick at 157 and Dylan Foley at 165 both took 3rd and Jacob Strohman at 141 and Zach Joseph at 149 both took 4th.  Joseph was 6-2 with 2 pins.  He beat NQ Henry Stauber of JHS 11-10 and beat last weeks finalist at the RWU invite Chris Siracusa 6-1.  Foley and Hamrick both went 5-1 on the day…

Williams College had three place winners at Doug Williams in Dan Evangelakos 5th at 133 and Tim Garripoli at 149 and Jorge Lopez at 157 both took 2nd place.  Tim Garripoli won his first four matches before falling in the finals to nationally-ranked Mike Polizzi of Stevens, 3-1.  Garripoli had three pins including a pin over Dan Downes of RWU who took 3rd in 5:36 and a win in the Semi’s over Stauber of JHU 6-2 who is a NQ.  Lopez an All American at 149 last year is up at 157 and looked very good for his second competition of the year. Lopez won his first 4 matches, 3 by pin before falling to Biscaha in the finals in a great bout.  A finals match that many wrestling fans hope to see a few more times this year.  In the Semi’s Lopez handled a real tough Erik Hamrick of Springfield 9-3…

Plymouth State placed 3 wrestlers at Doug Parker.  Ken Kiriga was 5th at 125, Ray Welch was 4th at 157, and Chris Perreault was 2nd at 184.   Ray Welch went 5-2 with 3 pins.  His two losses both came from Erik Hamrick of Springfield with both matches being 3-2.  Welch lost to Hamrick in the Quarters and wrestled back to see him again in the third place match.  Welch had a big win over Armano of BSU 6-4 earlier in the tournament.  Perreault won his first 3 matches before losing in the finals.   He had a huge win over last weeks NEWA wrestler of the week David Welch of RWU in the Semi-finals 5-2.  Welch had been wrestling great this season and the win puts Perreault in the conversation of contenders for the region at 184…

Rhode Island College wrestled well over the weekend placing seven wrestlers and taking 4th place at the Doug Parker Tournament.  The team was almost at full strength and it showed.  Ricondo Cole won the Doug Parker Tournament at 141, Silas Murray was 2nd at 133, and the anchormen got three 4th place finishes from Costa at 133, Humphries at 184, and Nicol at 285.  Cole went 5-0 to win the tournament and was not really challenged until the finals where he won 7-6 over Adam Swift of Centenary.  Cole won his second Doug Parker title in as many years winning last years tournament at 133.  Murray won his first 4 matches before defaulting in the finals.  He beat freshman standout Pat LaCroix in the quarterfinals, 4-3 and beat Ray Yagloski of JHU in the semis by fall in 6:33.  Brian Nicol went 4-1 on the day with 2 pins to take 4th place. …

Bridgewater State University had 3 place finishers at the Doug Parker Invitational.  Andrew Gauthier was 6th at 125, Paul Sughrue was 6th at 133, and Ricky Caruso was 3rd at 285.  Caruso went 5-1 and is the only wrestler to wrestle into the second period with Sacco of WNEU this season…

Coast Guard placed four  wrestlers at Doug Parker with Mark Howard 4th at 197, Phil Azzari 6th at 195, Den Gilbert 5th at 184, and Tom Porzillo was 6th at 141…Trinity College had two placers in Jeremy Rees who was 6th at 149 and Kyle  Lundberg who was 3rd at 174.  Rees won his first 3 matches to reach the semis and got two pins, in the quarters he pinned Siracusa of Wesleyan who was 2nd at RWU last weekend.  Lundberg started his day with two pins before losing to Dormann of Stevens in TB 2.  After the loss in the quarterfinals, he won his next 4 to take 3rd place. …

Wesleyan University had two place winners at the Doug Parker Invitational in Ryan Sblendorio who was 2nd at 174 and Josh Roometua who was 5th at 197.  Sblendorio won his first 4 matches before defaulting in the finals.  Sblendorio has started the season off strong.  Last week he beat Puca a returning AA from Cortland who was the only D3 wrestler to reach the finals of the NYS intercollegiate championships over the weekend … Roger Williams University had 6 place finishers at Doug Parker and two finalists.  Crowell the NEWA wrestler of the week won the tournament at 165 and Shane parcel took 2nd at 197.  Parcel won his first 4 matches to reach the final and recorded 3 pins in the process.  David Welch was upset in the semifinals but came back through with a 5-1 record on the day and a 3rd place finish.  The Hawks also saw one of their freshman standouts Dan Downes continue his strong season.  Downes lost in the Quarters to Garripoli and then came back winning 5 matches on the day and took 3rd at 149.

In other action on the weekend:  Norwich University, Southern Maine, and WPI had a Tri-Meet this past weekend.  Norwich University continued their strong start with a 30-21 win over Southern Maine and a 20-19 win over WPI.  USM would prevail 25-19 against WPI.  All 3 duals came down to the last match.  Southern Maine was led by Sean Fagan, Khali Newbill, Jon Dupree, and Carl Luth.  They all went 2-0 on the day and each had a pin.  Luth got a MD over Matt Taber 11-2 against WPI and a pin against Norwich.  Fagan had a Pin and a tech fall on the day and improved to 8-2 on the season. …Norwich University went 3-0 this week adding a dominating win over Plymouth State on Wednesday to their strong performance this weekend.  Dave Pinto at 165 and William Burns at 174 both went 2-0 for the Cadets.  Against Southern Maine they got a pin from Pinto and a MD from Burns for 10 team points.  In the WPI match Burns wrestled Justin Marsh to a great match and came out on top 11-10.  Norwich was strong throughout both duals but got two wins at 285 with Joyce pinning Suarez of USM in 1:22 and Maldonado winning by MD against WPI to help the Cadets win the dual. …WPI had 2-0 days from Brian Jennings at 133, Tyler Tilbe at 141, and Tanner Burke at 157.
