Xavier gets past Warde Melville to win at Guilford Invitational
Victories by Will Chowanec (138) and Pat Moynihan (106) and a pin from Seve Burgos (170) in the finals over wrestlers from Warde Melville helped Xavier outlast Warde Melville from East Setauket, N.Y., by two points to win the Guilford Invitational, 252½ to 250½. Fairfield Warde was right there in third place with 244½ points. Chowanec won his final by two points, 3-1 while Burgos picked up some key pin points at 170. Warde Melville had won the tournament for the past three years and six times in the previous eight years. … With eight finalists and four individual champions, Farmington won the 11th annual Indian Classic for the third straight year. Farmington had 211 points with Class S champion Windham High second with 152 points. Joe Miano (106), Ryan Rigney (152), Harry Pacheco (160) and Doyvdas Simanskis (170) won titles for Farmington. … Sam Lindblom (132) won an individual title and host Waterford captured the Lancer Invitational for the first time since 2006 with a 124-108½ win over East Providence, RI. The Lancers had two finalists and six medalists. Ten teams had individual champions. …With three individual champions, five wrestlers in the finals and two wrestlers that finished third, Branford won the Derby Invitational for the first time with a 16-point over Derby. The host Raiders had won the tournament for eight straight years. Nick Kelsey (126), Joe Martone (138) and Dakota Carden (152) won for Branford … With four finalists and nine wrestlers in the top four of their weight classes, Greenwich won the Shelton Invitational for the third time in four years. … Newtown had five individual champions and seven finalists to capture the Fairfield Ludlowe Invitational with 286 points with host Ludlowe taking second with 207 points. Ludlowe’s Ben Batulanon (120) was the outstanding wrestler and won at the tournament for the fourth consecutive year. … With three champions and four finalists, Bristol Eastern became the first team to win three straight titles at the Pomperaug Holiday Tournament. The Lancers outlasted Nonnewaug, 199 to 151½. Pomperaug was third as the 35th annual event. … Four Maloney wrestlers won individual titles including tournament MVP Jophy Nieves (152) as Maloney won the 13th annual Plainville Invitational for the first time with a tight 201-197 win over Bristol Central. Four Spartans finished third. Minnechaug (MA) Regional was third with 179 poitns. … Simsbury had eight individual champions and 11 finalists to win the Skip Arden Tournament in Manchester for the second straight year.

Shelton dominates, Darien falls to BC
On day two of opening day, Shelton had five pins in a 67-11 victory over East Haven. … Bristol Central had seven pins in a 63-12 win over Fermi-Enfield on the road. … Bridgeport Central beat Darien, 48-31 in a FCIAC match. … Wolcott Tech and Gilbert had four matches on the mat and Wolcott Tech got two pins while the Yellowjackets picked up a pin and a major decision, enabling Wolcott Tech to prevail, 36-34. The other 10 bouts were forfeits. …Hand picked up a dominant victory with a 75-4 win over Cheshire. ...Southington’s wrestling team will be getting some starters back shortly. Southington’s football team won its first Class LL championship since 1998 Thursday night in West Haven with a 54-34 decision over Fairfield Prep, scoring 24 points in the fourth quarter. The final was delayed three times in the last week due to snow and ice.

Milestone win for New Milford's Piel; FHS extends streak
New Milford had nine pins in a 69-9 victory over Stratford on the opening night of the 2013-14 wrestling season in Connecticut. The win gave head coach Chris Piel his 100th career victory. Now in his sixth season, Piel is 100-5. … With nine victories, Farmington beat Glastonbury, 41-21 on opening night. The Indians extended their school record winning streak to 38 in a row, dating back to late in the 2012 season. … Devin Marcaurele (170) earned his 100th career victory and the Colonels had nine pins to lead Ledyard to a 78-0 win over Woodstock Academy. Five of the nine pins were under 1:05. … Trumbull had five pins and a tech fall in a 53-21 decision over Middletown. … Southington at South Windsor was postponed because many starters on the Blue Knight wrestling team are playing Thursday in the Class LL football championship game at West Haven High against Fairfield Prep. The Jesuits postponed their Thursday night wrestling match against Guilford until Dec. 30. … Pomperaug received four pins, two forfeits and a 4-1 decision from Kyle Sheehan (113) to lift the Panthers to a 39-36 decision over Masuk. … Brunswick (3-0) trailed the entire match but won three of the last four bouts to beat Choate, 34-33. Junior Matt Marvin (195) won the final match by pin to secure the dramatic win. … … With five pins and four under one minute, Canton won its season opener with a 51-24 win over East Windsor. … Defending Constitution State Conference champion Platt Tech/West Haven had four pins and picked up a pair of forfeits to beat Vinal Tech, 42-27. … With six pins and two forfeits, Brien McMahon topped Ridgefield, 48-36. … First-year coach Chris Bray, who spend years helping run the Newtown Youth Wrestling Association, earned his first varsity coaching win as Newtown High dominated Bunnell, 67-0.

Monday, Dec. 16
Football success impacts three wrestling teams
The 2013-14 season opens on Wednesday but the success of the Southington, Fairfield Prep and New Canaan football teams are impacting their wrestling programs. New Canaan, which won the Class L state championship Saturday with a 44-12 win over Darien, won’t wrestle its first dual meet until early January. Southington and Fairfield Prep’s wrestling teams are hampered with several athletes still practicing with the football team. The Class LL football championship game between Southington (11-1) and Fairfield Prep (11-2) has been postponed three times due to snow and icy conditions. It is now scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 19 at West Haven High – one day after the wrestling and boys basketball season begins. Southington has already postponed its opening night match with South Windsor. More details in stories from the Meriden Record Journal and New Canaan News. … Ridgefield has a new head coach, Kyle Palmer, a two-time New England champion at Trinity-Pawling. … Sean Smith is the new coach at Bacon Academy after Mike Voiland was elected to the Colchester Board of Education.

Wednesday, Dec. 4
Strong start for Brunswick in opener
Looking to build upon a 22-2 season last winter, Brunswick School of Greenwich won 10 of 14 bouts and had six pins in a 52-14 decision over Horace Mann from the Bronx. … Chase Collegiate in Waterbury swept a pair of matches to open the season. Chase beat Marianapolis Prep, 48-36 and beat Storm King, 43-42 on criteria.  … The prep school season began Wednesday. On Saturday, there will be the big Canterbury Invitational in New Milford. ... Hotchkiss senior Angus Cowell (220) is ranked No. 12 in the nation by WIN magazine. Cowell won a New England title at 195 last spring and was a Canadian national champion at the junior Greco-Roman championships at 100 kg.
