Snow keeps wrestlers off the mat on Saturday
Snow across New England wiped out the entire high school wrestling schedule across the state on Saturday. Among the matches eliminated were top 10 bouts between New Milford, Bristol Eastern, Ledyard and Fairfield Warde. Oxford’s Valley of Champions tournament and the Husky Duals at Morgan were cancelled for the second time in the last four years due to snow. … On Friday, Foran-Milford improved to 17-3 with victories over Coventry, 40-23, and Westerly, R.I., 61-12. ... On Thursday, No. 1 Danbury had little trouble with Wilton in a 76-6 victory. ... Before a capacity crowd in Providence, Brown University (4-2) won nine of 10 bouts to beat winless Sacred Heart (0-10) in its Beauty and the Beast meet, 37-6 on Saturday. The Brown women’s gymnastics team was first in a four-team meet with Bridgeport, Rhode Island College and University of Rhode Island before the wrestling began.

Coast Guard improves to 6-5. Senior All-American Nate Giorgio (133) continues to wrestle well and is undefeated at 24-0. Patriots pull away to beat Danbury by 15
Two-time defending New England champion Mt. Anthony Union had three pins and a near fall to hand No 1 Danbury its first defeat of the season, 35-20, in the annual match between the two New England powers in Bennington, Vt. The Patriots (11-0) led by 12 points after seven matches but the Hatters (8-1) cut the lead to one, 18-17 on wins from Alex Marquis (138), Will Mills (145) and Jerrick LaPlant (152). But MAU won three of the final four bouts to secure the win. The Patriots lead the series, 11-4. … For the third time in five weeks, Danbury is the No. 1 team in the state as voted by coaches around the state in the weekly Norwich Bulletin poll. Four teams continue to receive first place votes but Danbury has seven of 12 votes and moved to the top of the poll. Newtown, which won its fifth tournament of the season, remained at No. 2 with three first place votes. New Milford moved up one spot from No. 4. Fairfield Warde’s first time at the top of the poll was short lived after losing to Xavier on Friday. The Mustangs slipped to No. 5. Xavier received a first place vote for the first time this year. …With six pins, Maloney improved to 9-7 with a 60-15 win over East Catholic.
