NEWA Wrestler of Week
Sophomore Austin Sisco (Denville, NJ), Western New England University, 133
Austin Sisco went 3-0 over the weekend.  Sisco pinned Zach Morris of Norwich in 5:23. He followed that up with a pin over Dominick Summers of Coast Guard in 1:06. In his last match he beat Joe Ferinde of Johnson and Wales, 5-4.  Sisco is now ranked No. 2 in New England at 133.

NEWA Rookie Wrestler of Week
Freshman Michael Gargano (Old Bridge, N.J.), Johnson & Wales, 174
Gargano went 3-0 on the weekend to help Johnson and Wales go 3-0 as a team.  Gargano pinned Pat Canavan of Western New England in 2:23 and beat Steve Birganti of Norwich 2-0.  Against Coast Guard, he won by tech fall over Tom Dalton 16-1 as the Wildcats beat Coast Guard, 27-19.

Pioneer rally falls short against Brown
The Sacred Heart wrestling team nearly erased a nine-point deficit but they lost the final bout of the afternoon in a 22-17 loss to Brown Sunday in Fairfield. Earlier in the day, the Pioneers fell to Penn, 31-6. Sacred Heart returns to action Sunday with a match at Hofstra with Columbia and Clarion.

Sacred Heart (1-6) won three of the first four bouts to take a 10-6 lead. Gerard Daly (125), Alex Harnsberger (141) and Brandon Levesque (149) each won for the Pioneers. Levesque had a 15-4 win while Harnsberger got a takedown with 20 seconds remaining to win, 7-6.

Brown won the next three matches to take a 19-10 lead. Elliott Antler (Xavier) got a takedown with 24 seconds remaining to earn a 3-1 win at 184 pounds. Sasha Olinyk (197) followed with a 12-4 decision at 197 to cut the Bear lead to two, 19-17. But Brown’s Augustus Marker (HWT) scored four points in the third period to earn a 4-2 win over Sacred Heart’s Ray Sherwood to win the match.

Trumbull’s Cross Cannone won six straight consolation round matches to finish fifth at the Matman Invitational at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa on Saturday. Cannone is wrestling at 141 for Wartburg College and is 20-5 with a team-high eight pins.

Granby native Dominick Malone (141) was pinned by No. 5 Jordan Conaway of Penn State Sunday in 4:37 as No. 1 Penn State easily handled Northwestern with a 46-4 victory. The senior is 15-5 on the year with eight pins. He was fifth at the Midlands tournament with six wins over two days. He was fifth earlier this year at the Michigan State Open.

The No. 3 North Carolina State wrestling team is 17-0 and off to the best start in school history. On Sunday, the Wolfpack won eight bouts, including six in a row at one point, in a dominating 35-7 ACC victory over No. 17 Virginia.

Sophomore Kevin Jack of Danbury, who is ranked No. 3 in the nation, started the Wolfpack win streak with a dominating 10-0 win at 141 pounds, which included 4:48 of riding time. Jack improves to 14-3 on the year.

At 285 pounds, North Carolina State’s Nick Gwiazdowski, the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the country, beat Patrick Gillen (Shelton), 19-3 by technical fall.

On Friday, Jan. 15, Daniel Webster hosted Roger Williams University and LIU Post.  Roger Williams went 2-0 beating Daniel Webster, 48-9 and LIU Post, 20-18. The Hawks got major decisions against LIU Post from Barbaria at 125 and Golner at 165.  With the Hawks down by four to LIU, Kyle Foster (Somers) got a pin at 285 to seal the dual.  Daniel Webster went 0-2 on the night.  Seth Carter at 165 and Alex Kane at 285 led the way for the Eagles.

In Worcester, WPI hosted the second of two quad meets on Saturday (Jan. 16), knocking off Trinity before succumbing to Wesleyan 18-16 and nationally-ranked Roger Williams.  The third ranked Hawks also defeated Wesleyan 27-15 and Trinity 37-11 while Wesleyan bested Trinity 40-5. Roger Williams, ranked No. 3 in the nation, is 15-1, Wesleyan 5-3 and Trinity 0-8. 

WPI (7-6) started the day with pins early and often in a 45-3 defeat of Trinity. The hosts received first period pins from Lucas Muntz (West Hartford) at 174 pounds, Michael Curtis  at 197, Pat Lacroix at 141 and Pete Nash at 149. The Boynton Hillers added big points via tech falls from Daniel Wensley at 184, Brian Amato (Newington) at 125 and Graysen DeLuca (Canterbury) at 157. Trinity’s Lucian Cascino accounted for the Bantams only win of the match when he grinded out a 3-2 triumph at heavyweight.

WPI’s contest with Wesleyan began with 12-0 major decision from Marsh at 165 pounds but saw the Cardinals string together four straight triumphs by decision to surge ahead 12-4.  Amato got the Crimson and Gray back on track at 125 with a hard-earned 4-2 decision and was followed by a thrilling Lacroix 2-1 victory overtime at 133.  WPI then took a 16-12 advantage on a Nash pin at just 32 seconds at 141, but Wesleyan collected a 7-3 win by Carter Armendarez at 149 and a 6-3 victory from Christopher Siracusa to take the match 18-16. 

In the Roger Williams match against Wesleyan, it was matchup between the top two ranked wrestlers in New England at 174 pounds. Roger Williams’ Danny Ressler beat No. 2 Taran Carr of Wesleyan, 7-5.

For Wesleyan, Isaiah Bellamy (197), Chris Siracusa (157) and Carter Armendarez (149) went 3-0 for the Cardinals.  Roy Forys (165) and Devon Carrillo (285) both went 2-0 for Wesleyan.

In Springfield, Coast Guard sophomore Chris Sullivan won all three matches and the Bears (3-5) won two of three in a quad meet at Western New England. Coast Guard battled Johnson & Wales, ranked 11th nationally in the first match of the day, falling 27-19. Sullivan won by a pin at 157 pounds, Mike Palomba won at 165, Marc Wagnerwon a 10-2 decision at 184 pounds and Cory Tomasetti recorded a pin at heavyweight to account for the Bears 19 points.

In the second match of the day against Western New England, the Bears fell behind 9-0, dropping the first two matches before winning the final eight matches, three by forfeit for a 43-9 win. Sullivan at 157 (2:08), Palomba at 165 (1:58) and Dan Fiorvanti at 174 (1:35) registered three straight pins as the Bears put the match away.

Coast Guard closed out the quad match with a convincing 33-6 win over Norwich University. Earl Roberts won by forfeit at 125, Dominick Summers earned a 6-2 decision at 133, Wilhelm was a 13-4 winner at 141, Gosch won a 12-2 major decision at 149, Sullivan won 7-5 at 157, Fiorvanti registered a major decision at 174, Wagner won by tech fall at 184 and Azzari won 8-2 at 197 for the Bears.

Justin Colon and Mike Gargano led the way for Johnson and Wales going 3-0.  Colon had two pins.  JWU was perfect at 125 with Bobby Jordan going 1-0 and Jay Albis going 2-0.  JWU beat the Coast Guard 27-19 in a tight dual.  The Wildcats got a major decision win by Ferinde at 133, Tom Grippi at 149 beat Matt Viera 4-3, Mike Gargano at 174 beat Tom Dalton by techfall 16-1, and Khamri Thomas at 197 beat Azzari 8-4.

Rhode Island College went to the Will Abele Ursinus Invitational with a banged up squad.  The Anchormen were led by John Georges at 285 who took 4th.  They also welcomed back veteran Ricondo Cole to the lineup who was up at 165 after being at 141 a year ago.

Williams, the University of Southern Maine, and Bridgewater State University competed in the Jim Aguiar Invitational hosted by Plymouth State University.  The tournament is named for the late Jim Aguiar.  Coach Aguiar was the head wrestling coach at Plymouth State from 1974-85.  Jim had over 100 dual meet victories as a head coach.  For the past dozen years he has helped out as an assistant coach with the Panther wrestling team.  Jim passed away this past August and PSU named their longtime winter invitational after coach Aguiar.

Williams finished second at the Aquiar Invitational with 152½ points, just behind New York University. Southern Maine (110) was third with Plymouth State (103) and Bridgewater State (72) rounding out the top five.

Despite five starters out of the lineup, the Ephs had four individual champions and five finalists. Matt Morris (125), Tim Garripoli (165) and Newington’s Chris Chorzepa (184) each won their weight classes with teammates Anthony Brooks and Sebastian Dziadkewicz sharing the title at 197. Garripoli beat Clay Callahan of Plymouth State, 7-5, in the finals in a battle of two ranked New England wrestlers. Chorzepa continues to be dominant going 4-0 with three pins and a tech fall.

Bridgewater State was led by Dylan Nuttal at 133 and Tom Arseneault at 285 whom both finished second.  Nuttal had a pin and a win by major decision on his way to the finals.  Hunter Fogarty at 149 and Steven Heaslip at 197 were both 4th for the Bears…Southern Maine was led by the tournaments OW Brendan Weir, the tournament’s outstanding wrestler, who won the 141 pound championship.  Weir went 4-0 with 3 pins including a first period pin over Coleman of AIC in the finals.  Teammates Daniel Del Gallo at 149 and Mike Risti at 285 also won Championships.  Del Gallo won two matches by major decision and won by tech fall in the finals.  CJ Luth (Milford) was second at 157 and Casey Abshire was third at 125 for the Huskies.  Luth had two wins by tech fall before falling in a tight 5-4 finals match to Jazikoff of NYU,

Plymouth State finished in fourth place and had 6 place winners.  The Panthers were led by Matt Frio at 174 who won the championship.  Frio is now 12-3 on the year.  Clay Callahan (Foran-Milford) was second at 165 and Greg Zaw at 133 and Rob Ruggerio at 165 were both third and Joey Aumann at 125 and Zac Cassidy at 141 were both fourth.
