Quibble named top wrestler
Sepko, Dion grab top coaching honors

MARCH 2001 -- Ledyard's Allyn Quibble didn't lose a match in Connecticut this winter and that trend continued at the 7th annual Connecticut High School Coaches Association's wrestling recognition dinner Sunday.

Quibble, who won his second straight State Open and Class L title this year at 140 pounds, was named the Wrestler of the Year. Southington High's Peter Sepko, who led the Knights to a second place finish in Class LL for the third straight year, was named state coach of the year.

Sepko's assistant Derek Dion was named the top assistant coach. Bill Tavares of the New London Day was named the Sportswriter of the Year. For a list of All-State wrestlers and members of the All-Academic All-State team, click on this link.

Quibble finished 43-1 this season with 19 pins, 10 tech falls and nine major decisions. He allowed only one takedown in his first 39 matches. Quibble finished his career with a 162-17 record that included three Eastern Connecticut Conference titles, three Class L titles and consecutive Open crowns. He finished third in the New England championships this winter after dropping a 3-2 decision in the semifinals to eventual New England champion Ben Lackey of Mt. Anthony, Vt.

Sepko and Dion have led Southington to five straight 23-plus win seasons, two straight CCC South titles and a 143-20-1 record in the past five years. The Knights (24-1) finished second in the state coaches poll behind Danbury.
