SOUTHINGTON, March 16, 2003  Danbury's Anthony Hayes, the two-time State Open champion, was named the state wrestler of the year Sunday at the Connecticut High School Coaches Association's 9th annual All-State wrestling banquet.

Rich Bowen, who led his Killingly High wrestling team to its first-ever Class M state championship, was named the state coach of the year.

All-State teams for Class LL, L, M, S and the State Open were announced along with Academic All-State teams.

Hayes went 43-1 at 140 pounds, finishing second in New England. He won 43 in a row and captured the FCIAC, Class LL and State Open titles for the second straight year.

Bowen led Killingly to its third straight ECC championship and a 25-3 mark. KHS finished the second ranked No. 2 in the state coaches poll -- its highest finish ever. Bowen is seven wins shy of 300 career victories with a mark of 293-85-2 in 17 seasons.

East Haven's John Taylor was named the assistant coach of the year. Ron LaBeef, a volunteer assistant coach at Killingly, and his wife, Olinda, were honored as contributor of the year. The LaBeef's run the Pin To Win wrestling Web site.

Paul Angilly of the Bristol Press was named sportswriter of the year.
