Avon rallies to beat Morgan CLINTON, Jan. 31 -- The Falcons (13-2) won four of the final five matches Wednesday night to erase a 12-point deficit and beat Morgan, 35-34. Morgan (17-8) led 30-18 before Avon's Brendan Roche earned a solid 8-3 decision at 167 pounds, wrestling well from the top. Falcon co-captain Don Papio (171) earned a 7-2 victory to cut the lead to six, 30-24. A victory by Morgan at 189 extended the lead back to 10 points, 34-24. The two wrestlers left for Avon were sophomore Ryan Walsh and junior Brian Dubiel with the task of attempting to earn 11 points to secure the victory. Walsh earned a 17-1 technical fall victory at 215 pounds to cut the lead to five, 34-29. That left it up to Dubiel, who had moved up from 215, to try and clinch the victory with a pin like he had done last year in a match against Rocky Hill. He was all business, pinning his opponent in 1:22 to lift the ecstatic Falcons to their closest victory of the season. Avon is off to its best start since 1993. |

Another late rally lifts Avon to victory AVON, Feb. 3 -- Overshadowing a thrilling victory such as the win over Morgan, 35-34 on Wednesday, would be a tough task for most teams. It's a task that the Avon High wrestling team accomplished Saturday. Digging deeper, pulling tighter together and continually racking up more and more difficult accomplishments, the Falcons beat East Windsor, 53-21; outlasted St. Bernard's-Montville, 45-21 and rallied from a 19-point deficit with 26 unanswered points to top Hall, 40-33. Against East Windsor, Rob Tolk (125), Ryan Walsh (215) and Brian Dubiel (275) easily won by pin, Brendan Roche (160) had an impressive win while Don Papio (171) and Eric Goldstein (189) earned lopsided decisions. Seby Lora, Lance Phelps, Dave Niek, Walsh and Dubiel each won for the Falcons (16-2, 5-0 NCCC) against St. Bernard's while Papio rallied from a four-point deficit to force overtime where he eventually prevailed. With only five matches left against Hall, the Falcons trailed 33-14. But Brendan Roche helped turn the momentum back to the Avon side, with a 10-1 decision. Papio had another war on his hands, winning 18-7, but the score didn't reflect the punishing intensity of the match, bringing Avon within 11 points. Eric Goldstein kept the streak alive getting a first period pin and pulling the Falcons closer, 33-28. That's when the Ryan [Walsh]/Brian [Dubiel] show called onstage for an encore performance and they did not disappoint. Walsh took some pressure off Dubiel winning by pin and giving Avon a narrow 34-33 lead. Dubiel finished off the Falcon rally, pinning his opponent with great relish and a 40-33 Falcons victory. |
