Fairfield Warde stuns Danbury to win FCIAC title
In a mighty upset, No. 3 Fairfield Warde picked up two crucial victories in the finals to become the first team other than Danbury in 23 years to win the FCIAC Tournament with a stunning eight point victory over the No. 1 Hatters, 260.5 to 252.5. Warde led by two going into the finals. With the score tied, Warde’s Mike Sullivan (160) tied his championship match with Danbury’s John Smith with a takedown with 21 seconds left. Sullivan won with a takedown in OT. With Warde leading by four, Warde’s Marcio Ventura (215) and Danbury’s Dylan Hancock met with the title on the line. Ventura’s reversal with 27 seconds left gave him a 5-3 victory and the Outstanding Wrestler award and Warde its first FCIAC crown. The last team before Danbury to win a FCIAC title was Greenwich in 1986. "It feels amazing," Warde coach Jason Shaughnessy told the Stamford Advocate. "I've been trying to catch Danbury for my 13 years here, and for us to get it done head-to-head like this, it doesn't get much better than that. We went 7 for 7 in the consolation finals, so all those third and fifths really helped."… No. 2 New Milford had nine finalists and set a new tournament record with a dominating win at the Southwest Conference tournament, beating runnerup Masuk by over 113 points. The Green Wave had five champions. … One of the meet’s big matches was in the finals at 152 pounds. New Fairfield’s Jesse Broderick upset Bethel’s Andrew Ford, 3-2. Tied at 2-2 with time running out, Ford chose to intentionally let Broderick escape but couldn’t get the takedown for the victory. … Ford received the SWC career wrestling award. … With five champions, Simsbury outlasted Southington to win the second annual CCC West Tournament. Farmington and Southington had four champions each. … At the Berkshire League tournament, Nonnewaug won the meet for the first time since 2006 and clinched its seventh BL title in nine years. Outstanding wrestler Tyler Tilbe (119) of Nonnewaug and Thomaston’s Alan Sanford (125) each won their third straight BL title. One final went into OT, one went into double OT and one was decided in triple OT. … With 11 finalists and three champions, Avon won the NCCC Tournament to clinch its fifth NCCC championship in the last six years. Somers had six individual champions while Canton had five. … Bacon Academy captured its second straight Eastern Connecticut Conference wrestling crown with a 237-204 1/2 win over Waterford on Saturday. The Bobcats placed six wrestlers in the finals, three of them, Matt McAllister, Nick Dodge and P.J. Mickens brought home titles.

Friday, February 12
Central rallies to top Eastern, captures CCC South title
No. 6 Bristol Central received victories from Nick Cyr (130) and Seth Vose (135) in the final two matches of the evening as the Rams erased a late five-point deficit to beat cross-town rival Bristol Eastern, 36-26 and win the CCC South championship for the fourth time in five years. … New Milford leads the SWC Tournament after day 1 with a 78-45 lead over Pomperaug. Masuk is close behind the Panthers in third place with 43 points with Bethel in fourth with 40 points. … In the ECC Tournament, Ledyard holds a four-point lead over Bacon Academy, 92½ to 88½ after the first day of action. Waterford is third with 87 points with Montville a distant fourth with 68.

Thursday, Feb. 11
Avon closes in on another NCCC title
Avon’s Leo Hebert (171) and Joel Proffitt (285) each beat Stafford wrestlers that had yet to lose an NCCC match to help the Falcons roll past Stafford, 69-9 and take a huge step toward its fifth NCCC championship in the last six years. Avon (23-6, 7-0 NCCC) had eight pins in the first eight matches to earn the victory. The Falcons can clinch the league title by finishing either first or second in Saturday’s NCCC Tournament in Granby. ... Middletown’s Victor Ekpenyong earned his 150th career victory Thursday against Berlin to set a new school record. The Dragons beat Berlin, 51-15. ... Shelton (21-3) beat Guilford, 51-18 to set a new single season mark for victories, topping last year’s record of 20.

Wednesday, Feb. 10
League title matches moved due to snow
Two title matches have been moved due to Wednesday’s snowstorm. Bristol Central will host Bristol Eastern for the CCC South championship on Friday night beginning at 6 p.m. with the junior varsity match and the varsity match to follow. On Thursday night, Platt Tech/West Haven will host Cheney Tech in Milford with the Constitution State Classic title on the line. Both teams are 5-0 in the CSC.

Tuesday, February 9
New Milford finishes undefeated at 21-0
No. 2 New Milford capped off an outstanding dual meet campaign with an easy 78-9 SWC victory over undermanned New Fairfield. The Green Wave had nine pins to finish 21-0 and earned its first undefeated season since 1995. New Milford finishes the season with a 31-match winning streak and a 43-match win streak in the SWC. The Green Wave beat No. 1 Danbury, No. 3 Fairfield Warde, No. 5 Bacon Academy, No. 6 Bristol Central and No. 7 Hand in dual meets while beating No. 4 Xavier and No. 8 Shelton at its own New Milford Invitational. … With three pins in the last four matches including a pin from Jared Murphy  (171), Darien beat Staples, 42-36 to finish 16-10 and tie a school record for most wins in a season. Darien had 16 wins in the 1978-79 season. … For the third straight season, Pomperaug (22-6, 11-1 SWC) finished wiith over 20 wins thanks to a 66-12 victory over Oxford in its regular season finale. … Simsbury had seven pins to beat valley rival Farmington, 47-22. … Derby received six pins to beat Wolcott Tech, 58-24 and improve to 23-4 on the season.

Monday, February 8
Three league titles to be decided Wednesday
Three conference titles will be on the line Wednesday night in showdowns across the state. In the CCC South, Bristol Central (5-0, 17-1) will host cross-town rival Bristol Eastern (5-0, 22-2) with the league title on the line. Central has won three of the last four titles. Eastern last won in 2004. ... In the Constitution State Conference, defending champion Cheney Tech will host Platt Tech/West Haven. Both teams are 5-0 in the league. ... In the NCCC, Avon (22-6, 6-0) hosts Stafford (13-9, 6-0) in the final dual meet of the season. The winner virtually clinches the league title and would have to finish fourth in Saturday’s league tournament to lose its piece of the championship. Since 2005, Avon has won 40 of 41 NCCC bouts. Stafford last won a NCCC title in 2003 … Danbury remained No. 1 in the state coaches poll, picking up two more first place votes over No. 2 New Milford. … Farmington will host the second annual CCC West tournament. There will be no league tournaments for teams in the CCC East, CCC North or CCC South because they couldn’t be organized in time. But sources in the league insist all four divisions will host tournaments in 2011.
