Two of the conference’s top teams went head to head on the mat last Friday night as Johnson & Wales hosted Rhode Island College. JWU had a capacity crowd of standing room only and brought a light in for the dual to put a spotlight on the mat during the action. It created a great atmosphere and the dual lived up to the hype as the two teams battled to a 1-point match.
The match started at 197 and would come down to the second to last match before RIC sealed the dual with a win at 174 and a 19-18 win. JWU won at 197 with Dylen Seybolt getting a 9-7 win over John Georges of RIC. Brian Nicoll then got the Anchormen on the board and tied the dual with a 2-0 win over Jonah Aurelio. RIC then took the next four matches. Jon and Silas Murray won by decision and that set up two of the top 141 pounders in the conference. Ricondo Cole got the best of the match up with a 10-3 win by decision over Mike Ferinde. Cole looks very dominant as the best 141 in the conference going into the final push before the regionals. At 149 another top match took place as newcomer Joe Slane of RIC beat Joey Gaccione 5-3 in OT. Slane’s win brought the dual to 15-3 in favor of RIC. JWU welcomed back their top wrestler in Everet Desilets at 157. Desilets made a great splash back to the mat with a pin of the No. 4 ranked wrestler in the region Kyle Lake in 1:46. Stephen Jarrell followed it with a 10-3 win over Brandon Conrad at 165 and brought the dual to 15-12 in favor of RIC. This brought a matchup of two talented freshmen in Justin Caparco of RIC vs Dae’Sean Brown of JWU. Caparco controlled the entire match and his win by major decision put the Anchormen up 19-12 and allowed them to hold on for an19-18 win over the city rivals.
The NEWA/METRO Duals took place at Williams College over the weekend. Three New England teams -- Roger Williams University, Williams College, and Bridgewater State University -- wrestled 3 metro teams – No. 25 College of New Jersey, Centenary College, and Hunter College.
Roger Williams University went 2-1 beating TCNJ and Hunter but lost to Centenary College in a highly contested dual, 22-21. RWU was without starters at 125 and 149 in the dual. Along with Welch, Shane Parcel went 3-0 with 1 pin and freshman Kyle Foster continues to come on at the right time of the season going 2-0 with wins over TCNJ and Centenary. Bridgewater State University went 1-2 and had a nice 27-22 win over Hunter College. Ricky Caruso continues to impress going 3-0 with a fall and a win by major decision…Williams College also went 1-2 with a win over Hunter College and a close loss to Centenary College 17-15. Jorge Lopez continues to look stronger every week as he comes back from an injury that had him out for a few weeks at the beginning of the month. Lopez went 3-0 at 157 while teammates Tim Garipoli, Anthony Brooks, and Martin Strenk all went 2-1.
Springfield College wrestled two dual meets this weekend. They wrestled conference foe Wesleyan University on Saturday and won 29-12 before losing to The College of New Jersey the next day, 24-18. In the Wesleyan dual, the Pride won 7 of the 10 matches. Freshman Zach Joseph at 149 had a big 6-1 win over Chris Siracusa and Hunter Ayen was also solid beating Josh Roometua 2-0. The Cardinals continue to get a great effort from freshman Matt Pelton who won 7-4 over Brendan Morgan. Against TCNJ, the Pride won 5 and lost 5. An injury default to Tommy Casper one of Springfield’s best wrestlers really changed the outcome of the dual. Hopefully it was just precautionary and Casper will be back soon. Eric Hamrick beat Dylan Thorsen 6-4 and Devin Biscaha who went 2-0 on the weekend beat Jesse Thorsen 6-0. Dylan Foley lost a tough 3-2 decision vs Antonio Mancella.
The All-Military Championships took place at Coast Guard over the weekend. Both Coast Guard and Norwich University faced great competition primarily from Division I teams. USM had a big change in their lineup as freshman Carl Luth was down at 141. Luth went 1-1 on the day dropping a decision to Tyler Tilbe of WPI 5-0. The move makes room for another USM standout Dan Del Gallo at 149. Del Gallo lost to top ranked Mike Perruccio of WPI 6-3. Del Gallo and Luth both had pins in their first matches against Plymouth. Jon Deupree went 2-0 for the Huskies with a good win over Chris Perreault of PSU 8-7 and Dan Suarez of USM was also 2-0 with 2 pins. WPI won 15 of the 20 individual matches.
