Sunday, February 16
Ledyard wins ECC, New Milford surges past Newtown at SWC
Points weren’t wasted by Ledyard, which placed eight wrestlers among the top four in their respective weight classes to outlast Windham High, 195-182 and win the ECC Tournament Sunday. The Colonels have won six of the last ECC Tournaments. They had two champions that won by pin, 4 finalists, two third place finishers and two fourth place finishers. Windham had two champions that won by decision, four finalists, one third place finisher and three fourth place finishers. Bacon Academy’s Howie Kilpatrick (145) was the outstanding wrestler. … In a thrilling finish, No. 2 New Milford won six of eight matches in the finals to erase a nine-point deficit and beat No. 4 Newtown, 232-223 and win the SWC Tournament for the 10th straight time. The Nighthawks also had eight finalists but just three came home as champions. New Milford held a slim three-point lead when New Milford’s Tom McIlveen and Newtown’s Ryan Wagner wrestled in the final at 220 pounds. Both men had each other on their back. In the end, it was McIlveen with the pin to clinch the tournament for the Green Wave. Pomperaug took third with its best finish since 2009.

ECC and SWC Tourneys to finish today
Two conference tournaments will conclude today. The ECC Tournament will resume at 12:30 p.m. at Fitch in Groton with the consolation semifinals. Around 1:30 p.m., the ECC championship matches, consolation bouts and fifth place matches will be held. Ledyard held a 149-141 lead over Windham when play was suspended Saturday due to the approaching snowstorm. In the SWC, the tournament begins today at 12:30 p.m. at Pomperaug in Southbury. Look for the finals around 6 p.m.

Saturday, February 15
Xavier dominates in win at SCC Tourney
No. 3 Xavier won the SCC Tournament championship for the third straight time with the most dominant performance in tournament history. The Falcons put 11 wrestlers into the finals, had seven individual champions and won the tournament by a record 120½ points. Xavier had 224 points with second place Hand earning 103½ points. Only Derby (230) in 2002 has scored most points in the tournament. With three pins and a championship victory, Guilford’s Jake Lundberg (152) was named the tournament’s outstanding wrester. … The Eastern Connecticut Conference suspended its tournament following the semifinals and consolation quarterfinals Saturday to allow athletes to safely return home. The tournament will resume Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at Fitch in Groton with the finals, third place and fifth place bouts to be held around 1:30 p.m. Ledyard currently leads the tournament with 149 points followed by Windham High (141) and Montville (127) .. For the 27th time in 28 years, Danbury won the FCIAC Tournament with 10 wrestlers in the finals and five individual champions. Fairfield Warde was second with six finalists and four individual champions.  Nonnewaug had six individual champions and beat Terryville by nearly 30 points to win the 31st annual Berkshire League Tournament and clinch the BL championship. Gilbert sophomore Logan Smith (160) was named outstanding wrestler. … The NCCC Tournament in Avon was cancelled due to Saturday’s snowfall and concerns over the safety of students returning home following the tournament. It will not be rescheduled. … For the third straight year, the CCC cancelled its four divisional tournaments due to snow. … The Southwest Conference tournament will begin Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at Pomperaug in Southbury. New Milford has won the last nine SWC Tournaments dating back to 2004. ... Host Brooks School in North Andover, Mass., won its first New England Prep School Athletic Conference championship Saturday with a 38-point win over Exeter Academy. Windsor’s Loomis Chaffe was fourth with Wallingford’s Choate Rosemary Hall sixth and Hotchkiss School and Suffield Academy tied for seventh. Hotchkiss had two New England champions.

Thursday, February 13
Seeds released for FCIAC and ECC Tournaments
Seeds have been released for the FCIAC Tournament and ECC Tournament. The FCIAC Tournament will be a one-day event at New Canaan High beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The finals are scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. The ECC Tournament will be a one-day event at Fitch with wrestling beginning at 9:30 a.m. and the finals at 7 p.m.

Wednesday, February 12
Windsor, Manchester capture shares of
CCC North crown
Windsor (12-5, 5-1) earned a share of the CCC North championship with a 49-19 win over East Catholic. Windsor shared the title with Manchester, who beat East Hartford on Tuesday night, 42-6. It is the first conference title for Manchester (9-9, 5-1) since 1998. Windsor did beat Manchester earlier this year, 36-29.  ... Amity (9-4, 5-0) won the SCC B Division championship with a 47-24 victory over New Haven. ... Avon won its 51st consecutive NCCC match with a 66-12 win over East Windsor. It is the seventh straight undefeated NCCC campaign for Avon. … No. 6 Simsbury (15-3, 6-0) won its first CCC West championship since 2001 with a 43-22 win over Farmington (24-3, 4-2). … Records seldom mean anything in Bristol when Bristol Eastern and Bristol Central meet on the mat. But No. 5 Eastern (22-4, 6-0 CCC South) continued its winning ways, taking the first nine bouts of a 46-18 victory. Eastern has won four straight league championships. … Four pins helped New Britain beat Southington for the first time since 1996 with a 45-33 victory. It snapped a 17-match losing streak to Southington. … Pomperaug High coach Mike O’Keefe earned his 300th career victory as the Panthers closed out the regular season with a 41-24 victory. … Sparked by three consecutive pins, Cheshire (11-13) ends its season with a 60-15 win over East Haven  … Platt High (25-2, 4-2 CCC South) pulled away at the end to beat cross-town rival Maloney (29-7, 3-3) for the ninth time in 10 years, 40-29.

Warde tops Ludlowe to keep FCIAC Eastern title
No. 7 Fairfield Warde won nine of 14 matches and had four pins to win the FCIAC Eastern Division championship for the ninth straight year with a 46-25 victory over cross-town rival Fairfield Ludlowe (22-3, 6-1 FCIAC East). Warde (20-3, 7-0 FCIAC East) improves to 10-0 against Ludlowe since the two schools were formed. … Shelton’s Liam Cummings (170) won by pin to improve to 41-1 on the season and lead the Gaels to a 57-24 win over Guilford. Teammate Kyle McGinnis (120) and Nick Pogasas (145) each finished with 35 wins. … Greenwich’s Chris Fischer (285) had a pin to win his 30th match of the season as the Cardinal (18-8) beat Stamford in the regular season finale for both schools. .. Three forfeits, a pin from Matt Derring (152) and a technical fall from Jon Albrecht (106) lifted Norwalk to a 38-33 win over New Canaan (5-15).

Monday, February 10
League titles up for grabs this week
There are some key matches on Tuesday and Wednesday with league championship implications. ... In the CCC North, Manchester (8-9, 4-1) can win a share of its first league title since 1998 with a win Tuesday at East Hartford (9-12, 2-3). Windsor (11-5, 4-1) can win a share of the CCC North title Wednesday with a win at home against East Catholic (7-15, 1-4). … In the CCC West, Simsbury (14-3, 5-0) can outright win its first league title since 2001 with a win over host Farmington (24-2, 4-1) on Wednesday night. If Farmington wins, the two teams will share the title. … In the CCC East, E.O. Smith (11-5, 4-0) is in position to win its second league title in three years if they beat RHAM (6-8, 3-0) on the road Wednesday night. RHAM can win the title by beating Rockville Tuesday night and E.O. Smith on Wednesday. … Xavier (23-5, 4-0) can win the SCC A Division with a win Wednesday over Hand. … Amity can win the SCC B Division crown with win Wednesday at New Haven. … In the FCIAC Eastern Division, the two Fairfield schools will battle for the FCIAC Eastern Division championship on Tuesday night at Fairfield Ludlowe. Fairfield Warde (23-3, 6-0 FCIAC East) is looking for its seventh straight Eastern Division title. Ludlowe (22-2, 6-0 FCIAC East) is looking for its first win in nine matches with Warde and its first FCIAC East title. ... There was little change in the state top 10 coaches poll. The same 10 teams are in this week’s poll. The only movement was Windham High moving up to No. 9 and Ledyard slipping to No. 10. Danbury (20-2) remains the unanimous pick as the No. 1 team in the state. …
