STRONG PERFORMANCES: There were some great duals and great individual matches over the weekend. This week starts out with honorable mention nominees for wrestler of the week.
197 - Petros Hologitas went 3-0 for Trinity . He beat previously ranked No. 2 Hunter Ayen of Springfield 3-1 this weekend.
174 – Luke Taylor of Coast Guard was back in the lineup and went 2-0 helping the Bears to a big team win over WPI. Taylor pinned Tyler Budwey of BSU in 31 seconds and tech falled Justin Marsh of WPI in just 2:30.
149 – Eric Hamrick of Springfield went 3-0. He beat Joey Gaccione of JWU 9-2.
285 – George Madosky of Johnson and Wales went 3-0 with a big 4-2 win over Kyle McGuire of Trinity and a pin over David Varian of Springfield to seal the dual win for the wildcats.
184 – Dylen Seybolt from Johnson and Wales went 2-0 for the Wildcats. He beat Chris Perreault of PSU 15-6.
TWO TOP 20 TEAMS MEET: Springfield hosted a quad meet between Johnson & Wales, Plymouth State, and Trinity College. Johnson & Wales went 3-0 and beat Springfield in a highly contested dual with both teams were ranked in the top 20 in the country. The Wildcats had a big boost getting standout Everet Desilets back in their lineup after a two-week absence. It was a big showdown as Desilets handled returning national champion Devin Biscaha, 8-2. Desilets is definitely making a strong bid for the toughest wrestler in the conference pound for pound. JWU got great efforts from Desilets, Madosky, and Seybolt as mentioned above, but they also saw some great wrestling up and down their lineup. Mike Ferinde at 141 went 3-0 and All-American Colin Lenhardt, who is now a few weeks into his descent to 174, bumped up to 197 and helped put JWU in control to win the dual meet with a win at 285 which George Madosky was able to do with a big pin. Jarrell and Brown were both 2-1 on the day.
Springfield College went 2-1 at the City Championship on Thursday holding out some top guys from their lineup with a big weekend ahead. The Pride was also without senior standout Tom Casper who has been a dominant force at 125. The Pride beat Trinity and Plymouth before losing to JWU. Dylan Foley and Tyler Keane joined Hamrick as wrestlers that went 3-0 for the pride. Foley had a pin, a win by tech fall, and a close 4-2 OT win over Jarrell of JWU. Keane won by major decision against JWU 12-0 and pinned Joe Thibault of PSU in 1:26. Strohman and Ayen both went 2-1, with Ayen beating Lenhardt 6-1 who bumped up to 197. Will Henson was 2-0 at 174 with two pins. Plymouth State beat Trinity in the last dual meet. At 165 the Bantams got a big win from John Williams over Clay Callahan 6-5, but PSU won the first 5 weight classes of the dual with good wins at 141 by Reisch 4-1, at 149 with Gerhold 10-6, and at 157 with Welch by MD 11-1. Jeremy Rees and Kyle McGuire were 2-1 on the day for the Bantams.

WPI, Bridgewater State University, and Coast Guard had a tri-meet on Saturday. Coast Guard went 2-0 and looked like a different team welcoming back three starters who had been out of the lineup for some time. Coast Guard beat BSU, 40-8 and WPI, 17-16. The dual was close with WPI with both teams winning five matches. All-American Nate Giorgio was back in the lineup for the first time in a long time for the Bears and he won a tough fought match over Brian Jennings of WPI 5-4 to help the Bears get the win. With both teams winning five matches it came down to bonus points and Luke Taylor’s Tech fall at 174 proved to be the difference. If Coast Guard can go to the regionals with this lineup healthy they will have a great chance to shake things up. Phil Azzari at 197 and Mike Palomba at 157 both went 2-0 for Coast Guard…WPI continues to get great effort and results from Amato at 125, Tilbe at 141, Perruccio at 149, and Freilich at 184 who all went 2-0. Tilbe, Perruccio and Freilich all had quality wins by decision against their very strong CG opponents…Bridgewater State showed their youth this weekend and struggled to get much going against the strong WPI and CG lineups. Ricky Caruso continues to shine for the BSU Bears as he went 2-0 with a pin and a tech fall.

Norwich lost a tough dual meet to Division II American International College, 24-21. AIC also beat Springfield on Thursday to win the City Championships. Again, each team won five bouts in the dual meet but with Evan Poole being DQ’d at 157 that made the difference for the Yellow Jackets to come out on top. Will Burns won by major decision, 16-2, for the Cadets at 174.
Wesleyan University and Williams College travelled to Oneonta for a quad that included Ithaca. Both teams went 2-1, with Wesleyan beating Oneonta, and Williams losing Oneonta but beating Wesleyan. Wesleyan also wrestled Cortland on Sunday. James Hamilton at 125 went 3-1 to lead the Cardinals over the weekend. Taran Carr went 2-1 but was 2-0 at 165 losing against Williams at 174 to Martin Strenk up a weight 3-2. Ryan Sblendorio had good wins by decision over Ithaca’s Sabella 3-1 and Oneonta Dan Graff 5-4 but lost bumping up to Chorzepa of Williams 10-2 and to returning AA Lou Puca of Cortland 8-0. Chris Siracusa had a good win 1-0 over Tim Garripoli of Williams at 149…Williams College was led by All-American Jorge Lopez who went 3-0 at 157. Lopez had two wins by major decision and a good 9-3 win over Kevin Collins of Ithaca. Chris Chorzepa at 184, Kyle Gaffney at 165, and Dan Evangelakos at 133 all went 2-1. Chorzepa was the only other wrestler besides Lopez to win against Ithaca. Evangelakos and Gaffney both had pins against Oneonta. Anthony Brooks went 1-2 for the Ephs but did beat returning NQ Josh Roometua of Wesleyan 6-3.

Roger Williams hosted Rhode Island College and the University of Southern Maine and put a pounding on both teams as the Hawks wrestled great on their Senior Day. Roger Williams won 17 of the 20 varsity matches beating RIC, 33-4 and USM, 31-6. The Hawks looked dominate up and down their lineup and have definitely made a case that they are clearly the team to beat in the NEWA Conference. At 184 Welch beat Jon Deupree of USM 3-2 a match that saw two nationally ranked wrestlers going head to head. Against USM, Parcel had a big win 6-5 over Sean Fagan at 197 and Kyle Foster beat Dan Suarez at 285 1-0. Against the Anchormen, which was expected to be a tightly contested dual, the Hawks rolled. At 174, Ressler beat Caparco 5-3, At 285 Foster followed that up with a big 5-1 win over Georges who bumped up from 197. Colom won by major decision at 157 over a tough Kyle Lake 14-2 and at 165 Crowell and Conrad had a great match that saw Crowell win 2-1…In the dual between Anchormen and USM, Rhode Island College looked good winning 32-12. John Georges had a nice 13-4 major decision win over Sean Fagan at 197 and Freshman Rookie of the week Dan Del Gallo won a big match 9-7 in OT over Joe Slane as one of the bright spots for the Huskies over the weekend.
